For those who haven’t seen it yet, the ten minute video they released yesterday:

Tatooine looks very good imo, what’s enticing to me is they seem to have succeeded in doing a “Star Wars tourism” game where you can just go on vacation for a few hours if you like. If there’s a decent story with memorable characters as well then that’s just a bonus. As to reports of it being too easy, I’m sure the hardest difficulty setting will provide enough tension and stealthy playthroughs are probably an option if you don’t want to be killing everything in sight, for immersion’s sake. It could definitely end up being a micro-transaction nightmare though . . .

Still seeing a lot of "pathing" with crates and tables and the like. That kind of thing doesn't feel open world so much anymore.

Also doesn't look like nearly enough of the world space is tangible/destructible.

It may be a tour of the galaxy...but if all you can do is look at it...we've been there before.

Star Wars Galaxies let you traverse pretty much a whole planet and go where you wanted when you wanted instead of where the story tells you to go. That came out in 2003, SWTOR hasn't replicated that level of exploration and neither it seems will this.

The " too easy" crowd can go and get their arse handed to them by Shadow of the Erdtree or up the difficulty.

The latest presentations look great. My only question is that while it looks as open world as open world can get, does the game follow any kind of plot? It seems to suggest that you're essentially on your own as far as where you want Kay's story to go.

There is a linear plot, your decisions along the way change your faction reputation but not your final destination.

I imagine it's going to be a very fetch quest plot similar to Elder Scrolls games. You get something for one character and they will then send you on your way to another character.

I thought I saw Lando in one of those recent videos, could that be him or someone else?

The presence of Lando Calrissian in this game raises an important question: why is this game not all Lando Calrissian, all the time?

If it was a Lando game, then I could hope that you'd let me know how it is. Why hasn't there been a Luke Skywalker game in decades? Why not a Han game or even a Leia game?

The idea is about giving new characters like Cal Kestis, Starkiller or even Iden Versio their time to shine in a major game with their own stories. That way you don't have to deal with any ramifications by potentially going off-canon to suit the new story.

Outlaws is on my wish list because of Kay being the protagonist. If Lando has a decent role in the game, that's cool. Wouldn't make a difference to me one way or the other.

Yeah, I mean the obvious answer is that LFL boxed themselves in (again) by saying "We're throwing out all of the Legends EU... it's no longer canon. BUT EVERYTHING WE DO FROM NOW ALL ACROSS ALL MEDIA IS CANON FOR SURE! (we mean it this time...)"

Not that I believe them, or that this is what's happened...

Just wait until they introduce the multiverse theme into the franchise; like just about every other comic franchise seems to be doing these days.

Disney LFL has been fairly consistent in relegating their legacy “tier 1” characters to supporting rolls in their video games, I think it’s a decision to save that material for more “prestigious” mediums, movies/tv.

But yeah, I’d be more excited for Outlaws if it were a straight up Lando game. :lando:

the the main character is voiced by a woman named Humberly Gonzalez, so its not like the anti-woke idiots are going to be any less angry and upset than if the main character had been Lando

but the opinions of those people don't matter anyways, who cares what they think

and as much as I would love a Lando game, I don't mind an open world game like this being given to a completely new character original character

I don't think I'd even be posting in a thread about a Lando game, much less have it on my radar to consider for a Day 1 purchase. It's not that I don't like the character, it's that I'm looking for something new. And the fact that this game features a female protagonist already raises the enthusiasm for me.

Watching some gameplay videos and it seems pretty clear this is Uncharted but with Star Wars. Was this supposed to be open world?? Because watching some of the new videos it just looks like you're on a very specific tightly-controlled track, cinematics are happening as you 'run' or click-move through the environment. Some areas seem to give a little more freedom of choice in what you want to do 'act' or 'run' or whatever ... but it still feels controlled. There seems to be way too much talking and chatter, too much of the animations taking over for the story parts, and yep .. a lot of annoying sidekick help.

Which is a shame. I was hoping for some true freedom and exploration. Just wander around the galaxy and worlds. The backgrounds and environments look gorgeous, and judging by some of the comments on the videos I'm definitely in the minority on this ... but I just have no interest in these "human-shaped go cart" games.

I'm not going to make any advanced judgement on whether or not the game is actually open world until after it's released and we get more reviews coming in.

IMO, it definitely looks open world; and yes it looks like it goes to boundaries far more than the JFO/JS games did.

Even that one doesn't seem open world. The environments look expansive. But it still seems like the character is on a path. And then story-cinematics pop up every few minutes.

Yeah, here's the one I just watched, where most of it seemed track-based.

Any open-world game is going to have setpieces where you have to raid this base or infiltrate that warehouse or free a prisoner or defend somebody’s homestead. Any setpiece arena like that is going to be designed to have lots of options, with multiple paths usually designed to give you a workable, satisfying route to your goal. Like, that’s game design. The game is designed. There’s always a path where the cover and the patrol paths and the environmental interaction elements all line up to let you sneak in. There are usually multiple. What do you think an open world game is, they just give you an empty plain with fifteen enemies randomly scattered and say, “Go at it, it’s open!”? They have to design the game so you can actually, satisfyingly play it.

And then when they show footage, they choose some early-game mission setpiece so that they don’t give away anything from the late game, but it has enough story to it to give us some flavor of the actual game and its narrative and atmosphere, instead of just watching a silent protagonist shoot up twelve random enemies in a mystery outpost. And then they have testers who have played this section of the game a thousand times play it for the recording, so that it looks smooth and impressive and shows you how badass you can be and what the character can do if you master it, instead of showing you playing it for the first time walking all around the exterior trying to find out how many ways in there are and then sitting behind cover for fifteen minutes trying to figure out that guard’s patrol path, and then spamming the map button trying to decide if you should go left or right down this tunnel. The demo footage is always going to look smooth and on rails because that’s how demos work; they’re scripted within an inch of their life to show off the features they want to show off.

None of that means there isn’t a huge game world you can wander around in and have random encounters with lizard creatures in the wilderness and meander through the streets for hours. None of it means there necessarily is, but their demo isn’t going to be you doing a walking tour of Mos Eisley because that’s not going to show anybody what you can do in the game.

Apparently, with the exception of me and Hav, no one here has played a UbiSoft game.

Or, if they have, are applying some absurd expectations for this game that will only end one way.

yeah based on the last few assassins creed games, I fully expect good things from the open world aspect
