No. Those are much larger areas of a city, a block, or wherever, where you can move your character freely within that space, even if you're following a story or mission.

I just don't see that here with any of the promotional materials given, or even the advanced reviews. It doesn't seem as free.

all we have for star wars outlaws is a gameplay demo, depicting specific missions and set pieces

all we have for assassin's creed shadows is a gameplay demo, depicting specific missions and set pieces

neither shows a player just wandering around aimlessly

but based on the previous assassin creed games, all of which started with similar demos, we can assume that there is a fair amount of open world to explore

By that standard even Witcher 3 isn't open world.

But, the thing is gamers don't really want open world games, they want interesting open worlds and that's far harder to really do.

No Man's Sky model can generate entire planets, but after a while flying over one, it's quantity over quality.

As someone who hasn't gotten into the Assassins Creed games at all, maybe someone could elaborate how a game like Horizon Forbidden Dawn and Forbidden West factor among the "Open World games". They have videos where you can literally walk from one end of the map to the other. There's no barriers like large bodies of water to cross and of course no space travel - both of which most games involving CGI loading screens, and you know what I'm talking about.

I know RDR2 is the same way; where you could ride your horse from one end to the other.

In case you have over 4 and a half hours to kill, here's a walk across the RDR2 map.

that's a video after release, where anyone has access to what's available in the game

it's very likely that once this game is out, very similar videos will be made by fans

it's not possible to make that kind of video for this game yet

The Horizon series is one of the best examples of a large open world with interesting density to it. The AC games nail size but not always the density as well.

Density can make a game feel more realistic. Again, I don't know much about the AC games outside of the fact that they feature different time periods (I'm assuming density in those terms just means having more NPCs walking around, birds flying overhead or perched on the roofs of buildings or lampposts, buildings that aren't just pretty decorations but serve an actual function (walking in and out).

The difference is in Horizon ypu don't have to go far to find something new. AC Valhalla has far more open patches, where you are going A to B, but they are very, very pretty open patches.

Full on interiors are rarer. They are one of Bethseda's calling cards. Dragon's Dogma II is good at it too.

The thing about the interiors is that many games (including JFO/JS) might only feature a handful of buildings; and those are the ones that it not only encourages you to enter, but you likely can't progress further in the story without it.

More gameplay footage coming out, this one shows a Jawa-themed quest. The comments section seem like it’s being poorly received but I thought it looks pretty good. Has a very Ubisoft-feel to it but the SW setting gives it some spice. I suppose people who are exhausted with both SW and/or the Ubisoft formula will be turned off but I’m looking forward to it. The planets look lovely imo.

Edit: another gameplay video focusing in the mini-games with an emphasis on sabacc. Ngl, I think I could spend a lot of time in this, I loved the atmospheric poker games in Red Dead Redemption and this looks like a similarly well-embellished concept with fully animated opponents at the table. And you can cheat!

Preview from gameplay by Metro UK

Essentially it takes bits from AC, Watchdogs and Uncharted

Not always the best of each part but the initial view is that it is at least trying to do away with the extreme levels of bloat we've seen recently

Space combat appears to be decent to good, blaster combat potentially a bit meh based on what they've had chance to play before final tweaks, patches etc...

I suppose we'll know more in a month. If there's a review embargo then typically thats not great news, if the reviews come out a few days before hand, then at least they have faith in the product.

"All of this for a tooth..."

    exactly...

    Score sounded decent.

They turned that Sarlacc gut into quite a labyrinth.

But still, another pointless fetch quest with a bandit camp to handle at the end.

I like how there's different ways of taking down enemies in the game; giving some depth as opposed to just taking out a lightsaber and hacking them all the time.

This looks like the first hour or so of the game minus opening cutscenes. I can’t say I’m blown away by it but the Ubisoft formula seems up to its usual standard. A few impressions:
    • Kay doesn’t have much personality and her animations aren’t very expressive, not matching up to what we’ve been getting from other AAA titles lately. Nyx is cute though and seems to define her concept as a scoundrel character.
    • The writing is bland but hopefully there will be more interesting characters and situations further into the game
    • Stealth play seems pretty smooth and Nyx will provide plenty of options for getting through dungeons
    • The underworld reputation system seems pretty simple but could set up some interesting situations if we get quests involving all the syndicates at once
    • Hard to get a firm impression on the atmosphere but I like music and sound effects, the urban environments look appropriately full and colorful, conversation cutscenes pulled me in
    • There are some unfortunate bugs like a cup floating in front of a character during conversation, but sadly that’s no surprise coming off the Ubisoft assembly line
I have a feeling this game will get a lot of criticism because it doesn’t seem to be breaking out of the Ubisoft standard of quality which has been endlessly pilloried in recent years. I’m still looking forward to it though.

Star Wars Outlaws™ Post-Launch Roadmap Revealed

After launch, Star Wars Outlaws Season Pass owners will be able to continue their journey across the galaxy with two story packs, that will also be available for separate purchase.

Star Wars Outlaws: Wild Card – Coming Fall 2024

Kay is hired to infiltrate a high-stakes Sabacc tournament, but as she crosses paths with the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, she soon learns that another game is being played.

When this first story pack is released, Season Pass owners will also get the Hunter’s Legacy Bundle and the Cartel Ronin Bundle with additional outfits for Kay and Nix plus cosmetics for Kay’s speeder and her ship, the Trailblazer.

Star Wars Outlaws: A Pirate's Fortune – Coming Spring 2025

The Trailblazer’s reputation precedes Kay as she runs into veteran pirate Hondo Ohnaka, who is looking to settle old scores with a ruthless gang of pirates.

    ------------

I never buy Season Passes for any games on initial launch anyway, but both of these DLC packs seem pretty intriguing.

I'm surprised MKIceandfire is being allowed to post his early access playthroughs online. Most people who are given early access to games are just allowed to give their general thoughts about it prior to the embargo dropping.

Game release is the 30th of this month and reviews can be released on the 26th.

On the basis that the reviews will be out in advance, that suggests they have some faith in the game which is nice to see.

It means nothing about the actual quality of the game but general rule of thumb is if the reviews can't come out till release date, you're guaranteed at duffer pretty much

While the “official” release date is Aug 30 anyone can start playing it Aug 27 if they preorder the Gold or Ultimate editions. Ubisoft pretty much has to lift review embargo on the 26 at the very latest otherwise early buyers on the fence will just be watching streamers rather than reading review scores.

Even though I did preorder the gold edition (with by birthday gift cards), I won't be home early next week to actually reap that benefit. Alas.

Initial reviews put it in solid 7-8 out of 10 territory (for those who need a numerical score)

Essentially its sounds like its a solid enjoyable game with some flaws but nothing really stands out as amazing.

Pretty much what I suspect most of us expect to be honest

So in other words it’s an open world Ubisoft game.
