Games should be giving players the option to have their character be however they want.
That way it caters to everyone.

But ultimately, so long as a character is well written & the story is good I don't care about how they look or who they like.

People whine about not enough white straight people in modern media but we've recently had two acclaimed Star Wars games with a straight white ginger male lead character.

This is probably the game I’m most anticipating right now, even though I’ll be playing others, namely Spider-Man 2.

For all I greatly enjoy video games, the industry, fandom and discourse is frequently pathetic.

Newish interview with narative director Navid Khavari and creative director Julian Gerighty. No big surprises but a few anecdotes to clarify development decisions.

    • Outlaws was first conceived as an open-world action game, the decision to make the player character an unaffiliated scoundrel rather than rebel or Jedi was done in service of the open-world framework and action mechanics like stealth and driving. It made the most sense.
    • It was Lucasfilm that "suggested" Outlaws be placed in the time period between ESB and ROTJ, Massive did not have a specific time period in mind at the start of development.
    • They are trying to create a "tourism" fantasy - "If you ever wanted to map out the distance between moisture farms and Mos Eisley, you can do that."
    • The Empire will have a presence on all planets, the "Wanted" is unavoidable, Death Troopers will hunt you down if wanted level gets high enough
    • When asked which classic Star Wars cinema scene most exemplifies the game, Navid said the cantina scene where Han is with Chewie, Luke and Obi-wan, because the contrast of scoundrel and Jedi. May that be a little hint as to some cameo characters who could appear? [face_thinking]

I disagree. Some games should absolutely give you that element of freedom of design but if a having a character creator starts creating graphical glitches or unnecessary graphical loading that can be avoided just by using mocap and similar. Then simplify things.

I also loathe most character creator bits and find them really annoying. Bethesda is really irritating with it and Cyberpunk was beyond irritating too (even more so when it was a first person game and I only ever saw myself in the mirror)

I only prefer character creation in online games where in with a server of dozens of other players at a time. It lets you be unique and stand out. RDR2 does a fine job with that. To a lesser extent, so does GTAV. Battlefront used to be good like that, but the latest game was very stingy on non-hero/villain skins. I don't get why Cyberpunk, as a single-player FPS, even needed character creation. Maybe just let the player choose between a female or male avatar. How often would you even see your character?

Cyberpunk has a lot of game systems that are only half-baked, to put it mildly. If you go for the immersive playthrough style, spend a fair bit of time in the apartments, then there’s plenty opportunity to look in mirrors which does enhance the “ghost in the shell” concept to some extent, but ultimately the opportunities to see yourself - or rather see your body - are too few and far between.

Outlaws will definitely benefit from a fixed protagonist considering the cinematic/cutscene format, right decision imo. If it’s wildly successful then down the line Ubisoft will probably go for a multiplayer Star Wars game of some sort where with a character creator.

Cyberpunk is about to change substantively but those changes probably don't impact view of your character in game.

This looks like a game that I would even considering preordering; and I haven't done that for any SW game since BF2.

That was Han in the carbonite as an Easter Egg, right?

Although I doubt it could rival the Jedi Fallen Order/Survivor series, it looks like fun and it's nice to see a totally different character from a totally different background get a story game.

Nah, no more than usual, unless you're a sucker who pays full price and / or goes for the deluxe / ultimate editions.

It will apparently be big in scale, as well as in price

Not expensive (although I'm sure it will be pricey), expansive as in a wide range of open world/galaxy activities they even say in the trailer the main job is to just rob this crook across the galaxy

Yeah but I thought you meant expansive as in add-ons like I'd mentioned.

What I found interesting was how they seemed to incorporate what's happening during the OT era that's familiar, like Han in the carbonite. Makes you wonder if it will feature familiar characters to interact with (outside of just Jabba).

Ultimate edition lists a season pass covering two expansions.

Also all but guaranteed to have a probably-easy-to-ignore shop.

Any confirmation whether we’re able to fight Rebel thugs/goons? I know there’s a faction point system in place.

    Yikes...it definitely looks Ubisoft.

Game itself appears to be teasing Ubi taking a stab at Rockstar's turf behind the shield of an expensive IP.

    The release date is interesting.

They aren't holding it for the holidays.

A summer release, in the traditional launch window for sports games...
