Oddly, it was MS himself who was the first to denounce the rumor as soon as it came up. I got the sense they may have wanted him for a role, but he might have turned it down or they never even asked. When he finally agreed to do the Morbius film, he seemed reluctant about comic book films in general and admitted he had turned down a similar franchise film the year before (he never confirmed what that was -- it might have been Marvel, but it might have been Star Wars since the timing was right).
While I get one might be afraid of typecasting Matt Smith already may have been typecast as Dr. Who so I don't know why he would have hesitations on joining a franchise film given the chance if only to get big publicity as another character. Unless it's a role with heavy makeup or something that he wouldn't like. And now we don't even know what the film industry will look like after the coronavirus (assuming an effective vaccine is ever found).
Given how he was wasted in Terminator Genesys I wouldn't blame Smith for avoiding Hollywood blockbusters.
Well, we’re nearing the end of July and there hasn’t even been an announcement that the show even exists yet, so a 2020 release seems very sketchy to me at this point.
Maybe it is next year....I mean I could see them wanting something to be the Flagship for Star Wars in 2021 in case Cassian production has to stop.
Seems odd when they’ve already got Bad Batch slated for a 2021 release. If they need to pad out content, why have two shows in one year? It genuinely could be that this Rebels thing, if it exists, isn’t as far along into production as people assume. Maybe we’re looking at something that’s closer to a 2022 release.
Considering Bad Batch got confirmed I'm defiantly convinced the Rebels sequel series exist. How it's all scheduled or what's going on production wise...Who knows.
Very true But yeah, it's weird, this show is like the Obi-Wan movie in a way it feels like...We know they've probably had this thing on the books for a while it's only a matter of when.
I was going to make the joke "what if the Rebels sequel is the Bad Batch series?" (we're going to get WBW abuse someday, mark my words), but on further thinking, they might be doing this series first to set up something in the Rebels sequel. It seems odd they'd wait so long for the Rebels sequel, and more than likely it won't be called "Rebels" anything and be something new with a connection to Rebels through some of the characters (the original child audience is going to be much older -- they have to bank on some of them still watching while also attacting a whole new group of kids). But to keep people still thinking about Rebels, it might make sense to insert Rebels-specific clues into this series. I mean if we take all the crazy spoilers for the Rebels sequel, there's a lot about Rex, and oddly something about a Quinlan/Barriss teamup, and threats from the Unknown Regions. All three of those could be in the Bad Batch series, or at least the setup for what will ultimately be in the Rebels sequel. (...if we assume the Rebels sequel is still about Ezra following a deranged Rakata while hitting on Thrawn's niece...)
The Kessel Run guys did mention that the rebels sequel is done and only reason bad batch is up first is because of clone wars hype. So i could see bad batch comes in early and Rebels sequel comes later but before Cassian and mando 3.
That’s an interesting point, this probably won’t even be a “sequel” in the strictest sense. The Rebels aspects might actually just be a small element of a larger story. So whatever this new show is, they’ll probably need to establish its new cast, setting, lore etc the same way Rebels did with A New Dawn and the Kanan comic.
Tie-Ins for the assorted series that have come out have been distinctly lacking or haven't been above par really.
To be fair even Kessel Run Transmission have said on occasion their sources call it a Rebels "SUCCESSOR" series, take that as you will with the naming. Also let's be hoenst....ALL THE STAR WARS TV SHOW NEVER END WHERE THEY SAY THEY BEGAN Clone Wars: Ends up being the Ashoka, Rex, Maul show Rebels: Ends with a Lothal Mortis World Between Worlds while continuing certain arcs of Clones Wars Resitance: A racing show that ends up being about defending a space station from the First Order and getting a good character who defected back to the good side. Star Wars TV series have a history of going on tangents or ending up in a completely different place from where they started or were advertised. For better or worse, depending on how you the viewer enjoyed them.
I don’t really agree, at least not in terms of the characters we follow. TCW was always advertised with Ahsoka and Rex being the leads, same with Rebels being about Ezra and the crew of the Ghost and Resistance being about Kaz and Team Fireball. If this next show presents us with a new cast, I’m pretty confident that they’ll be the ones whose story we follow through to the end.
HMm...I don't know, Anakin and Obi-Wan were always pretty front and center in those first TCW posters...But I digress. But while I agree that whoever we follow at the start is who we follow at the end, I feel the story or premise will be very different from when we start. If the Rebels "Successor" series is advertised as "The Search for Ezra" my guess that last for a season and then who knows what the show is about by the final season...Thrawn and Ezra fighting the Yuzong Vong (Highly doubt it) but my point is, I'll be very curious where the story starts to where it ends. But I guess that's all Star Wars stories to an extent.
I mean, we don’t even know if the search for Ezra will be the stated intent for the series. People seem to assume that this is going to be about Sabine and Ahsoka going off into the Unknown, but I can’t imagine that’s the case if this is more a successor show than a direct sequel.
