Can the good guys even be killed on a Disney XD show?

When we come down to it, Star Wars Rebels is on a cable channel meant for children. So would a show like that really even have the option to kill off its main, good guy, characters?

“If it serves the story, and the point of the story was to do that, then absolutely yes,” Filoni said. “We would have to have a really good reason for doing that. It would have to make sense and it would be something I talked about with my co-workers at Disney XD... But there has to be room for that, or we’re not being authentic to Star Wars anymore.”

 

I already miss her.

Not my image, but this is exactly what I was thinking when I saw the episode:

I'm hoping that if Thrawn is the villain of next season, that we get an episode appearance by Mara Jade, maybe hunting down an Imperial trying to defect. Similar in age to Leia, who showed up already, and it would fit her role at the time, and throw EU fans another bone.

 

Yeah, thus the scrappiness.

I had originally planned to post the original, unaltered, and then "Beloved Sister" jumped out as something that had to be amended and the rest followed.

 

Ironic, given that the guy in the image can never see anything ever again.

 

Also that's not actually irony.

1: Oh man, you can see just the barest flicker of Anakin here for a second. Ow.
2: It looks like Ahsoka actually got him, just above the eyebrow. That red line matches up with the line she cut, not with the scar he had in TCW.

 

Sooooo Vader basically accomplished nothing in this episode right? As awesome as he can make getting nothing done look, I thought Filoni and the Rebels crew established you only survive a brush with Vader once

 

If Vader had not been there, there would be no time pressure to deactivate the temple, and they could have shut it down safely and/or studied it. He also neutralized the most powerful and experienced Force-user the Rebels had, at the same time as Kanan was disabled and Ezra is being tempted.
At the start of the Season, he singlehandedly drove the Rebels off of Lothal, poisoned their well of support, and took out their flagship. Now, with the assistance of some Inquisitors and third party involvement of Maul messing things up, he got more beaten up, but still potentially saw the entire Force-Using element of the Rebels put out of action.

I'm sure he'll be able to see somehow. Force sense, prosthetic eyes...Chopper as a glorified guide dog...

Then there is always the blind seer trope.

 

Little late to the party, but that was damn good. Great fight scenes, and that Sith temple looked incredible. Just wish when they were on approach to Malachor they would of showed a shattered planet located in that same system Hope the history of the ancient battle gets flushed out one day and we get more info on what that superweapon can do.

 

In my mind, he had one job: kill one of the crew and show them Vader isn't to be messed with. I think Ahsoka should have died both for Vader's own good and Ahsoka's,

 

Ummmm.

Seventh Sister was a skilled, cunning warrior

Fifth Brother was kind of dumb

Eighth Brother died like a clown

Did I get them all?

 

Maybe I'm a chump, or maybe I'm a cynic, but I did think they were going for "make Maul an anti-hero" for the 1st half. Not that I thought it was believable but I thought they might be going with "ah, this guy is popular, let's make him a good guy!" marketing-mandated character wist. So I will admit I did not see Maul is really being evil and trying to kill everybody twist coming at me. So that worked.

About Ashoka's powerful dramatic final scene with Vader not quite earning it, I think it really is built off the backs of all those Clone Wars episodes and especially the season 5 finale "The Wrong Jedi". There wasn't much room or time to develop the Ashoka / Vader dynamic this season because, well, them trying to kill each other is pretty much exactly what would happen so you gotta roll with the history of what we've seen.

And I have. and it paid off beautifully. Some of the best damn stuff the franchise has ever done.
Great way to work in Matt Lanter & Ashley Eckstien for the big finish with two Clone Wars vets. Hell, maybe Vader's voice box can be broken all next season to get in more of that (I'm assuming James Earl Jones is much more pricey). But I'd love a way they could use both Lanter & Jones for Vader

I found that to be very intentional as Star Wars is a series that often reflects back (and forward) on itself at key moments. I thought it worked beautifully. Kylo Ren has more in common with Anakin than he'll probably ever know.

 

I'm taking the "Ahsoka is dead and we saw Vader leaving her memory behind but we left it ambiguous because we're cowards" approach.

But the ambiguity guarantees she'll be back, eventually -- elsewhere in the NU, if not Rebels -- so I probably shouldn't bother.

 

This got me so feels-y.

but oh man, lightsaber helicopters

 

Lightsaber helicopters are about as good of an idea as this:
