‘Star Wars’ Shocker: Ryan Gosling in Talks to Star in Shawn Levy’s Movie (Exclusive)

If the deal makes, this would send the project into hyperdrive after two years of development and make it the next 'Star Wars' movie to go into production.

Ryan Gosling is headed to the great galaxy far, far away.

The three-time Oscar nominee is in negotiations to topline the Star Wars feature project that will be directed by Deadpool & Wolverine filmmaker Shawn Levy.

Details on any Star Wars project are harder to acquire than plans for an orbital planet killer, and this one is no exception. Levy has been developing his Star Wars feature since 2022 and Jonathan Tropper, who collaborated with Levy on films such as This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project, has been working on a script for over a year. Levy is also producing the feature via his 21 Laps banner, joining Star Wars stewards Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm.

It is unclear when Levy’s project is set. Star Wars stories have run the gamut of hundreds of years, detailing the goings-on of a galactic republic-turned-dictatorship-turned-rebellion. It’s also unclear if it concerns Jedis and their enemies, The Sith. It is, however, to be unconnected to the so-called Skywalker Saga, the stories centered on well-established and beloved characters Luke Skywalker and his father, Anakin.

It is meant to be a stand-alone movie, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. Lucasfilm had no comment on any impending deal or the project’s details.

Sources say the Gosling development is a late-in-the-game move for Levy’s movie schedule. The filmmaker was eyeing to direct a boy band movie set up at Paramount, which would have reunited him with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. But Gosling’s interest and involvement suddenly shifted the Star Wars project into hyperspace. If a deal makes, the project would continue to fly like the Millennium Falcon, becoming not only Levy’s next movie but also the next Star Wars movie to go into production, with cameras potentially rolling this fall. The Mandalorian and Grogu wrapped in mid-December and will be released on May 22, 2026.

Ryan Gosling will be the handsome Jedi who was trained under Luke Skywalker and survived the temple burning. He will rival Rey in who is the future leaders of the New Jedi Order, 20 years after the temple burning.

 

I am saying no Rey for Levy, that was just scooper wires getting crossed.

Anyway the real question is where will Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman cameo?

 

Rey will be the Nick Fury of this era of movies, lol.

 

He’s a great actor and would indeed provide an immediate boost to a new Star Wars film.

I hope they write some humor for his character too. The guy’s got impressive comic timing.

 

He is very funny actor with great Charisma. But i hope we dont get Han type character. Lets see him do a role he never plays a monk

 

Ryan has always been a cool actor. And a good actor. Star Wars has a long tradition for casting both upcoming talent and famous actors. This is a win.

«Developed as a standalone with no ties to Skywalker Saga» Hmm. Suspect it will take place long into the future maybe. Then you have much more freedom to create and build your own fictional universe. Like with Mangolds film, you can tell why certain filmmakers wants to make stories that does not rely on the existing lore rules.

 

I take that wording loosely like say Rogue One, as one ST character been rumored by one one jeff Sneider. And i dont think we get any further in future more then the Rey movie and Trilogy if this is a standalone. Dawn of the Jedi has its apeal with being the jedi origin. And Shawn Levy is already familiar in doing things in existing lore.

He'll be playing Rey's love interest, who is known for his great comedic lines like: "Dude, I'm heading to the beach to catch some 'Reys'... if you know what I mean... wink, wink."

So its very likely now that this will be the 2027 film. Then, probably Mangolds film after that. Its sort of funny that the first two films in the new era - none were announced at the last Celebration. And no Rey in any of them if we are to believe the rumours.

 

Why?

 

A pretty decent rumour for a change. This perhaps suggests that this project’s goose hasn’t yet been cooked.

 

I'm wondering why Gosling took a late-in-the-game sudden interest in this project; did he possibly see a script and love it, or perhaps heard a summation of it?

I had very little interest in Levy's film up until this point, but Gosling made me do a 180. He's the increasingly rare combination of both a big movie star and genuinely great actor.

It certainly seems like this is next in line for production and targeting the December 2027 release date. I'm guessing it will be formally announced at Celebration Japan.

 

Scarif was only hit by a Single Reactor Ignition, there is probably still some pretty good chunks of Beach available floating out there.

Any mods want to add Beach to the thread title? We're probably on to something!

Ryan Gosling for the fiftieth anniversary sounds pretty rad. I'd look forward to it.
