I'm probably more excited for this than any other SW book in recent memory. Most of the novels serve as supplementary material filling in gaps in content that originated in other media, but with the High Republic stuff the content is being driven by the printed material. It's almost like jumping into a new literary universe altogether, and there are few things in life better than that.

Im about a 1/3 through. it’s good. One thing caught my eye though. Came here to see if anyone else noticed.I’ll mark the quote spoiler, but it’s early in chapter one so it’s not really spoiling anything.

“She knew this situation was impossible. The hyperlanes were empty. That was the whole point. She couldn’t rattle off all the science involved, but she did know that lightspeed collisions in established lanes simply could not happen. It was “mathematically absurd,” to hear the engineers talk about it.” - Captain Hedda inner monologue during chapter one.

But in rebels Hera told Ezra “purrgil wonder into shipping lanes, crash into ships. I’ve lost more than one frind that way”

One swears it’s impossible, while the other implies it’s not necessarily uncommon. Seems like a canon contradiction. Especially since they’re both lifelong experienced pilots and would know something like that.

    Am I missing something?

    Time perhaps?

This could be the first encounter with the Purrgil.

Yeah, plenty of time for hyperspace knowledge to improve.

Given people learned how to travel through hyperspace from the purrgil, that seems unlikely

The "mathematically absurd" is a fancy way of saying "it's a one-in-a-million chance" - rare, but not "never happens"

It could also be ship vs. ship. We can state that it’s “impossible” for planes to crash into each other if they follow their known [radared+] paths, but mechanics fail, tools are faulty, and things happen. Those accidents are rare, and “mathematically” (read; theoretically) impossible, but in reality are not due to a ton of unknown variables.

I could say so much about this, but suggest reading the book is better.

What are Yoda, Yarael Poof and Oppo Rancisis (who technically shouldn't be born for at least another 25 years) up to?

Shipping lanes not necessarily hyperspace lanes

    Read through Chapter 11.

Definitely enjoying it so far. Further thoughts tucked on a spoiler tag to be considerate but I'm trying to keep my thoughts general:

Soule does a good job capturing the perspectives of everyday people in a galaxy far, far away and introducing us to a diverse (in gender, species, age, etc.) cast of Jedi with varied conceptions of the Force that are interesting to read. It also feels like a different era both in the little details (bacta having the promise of being a potentially revolutionary drug rather than having the widespread use we see in the saga itself) and in the broader milieu of the High Republic being a time of expansion, of opportunity, of ambition, and of optimism.

The chapters are fairly short and the writing engaging, so I feel like I will be able to get through the book fairly quickly.

Excited to find out what will happen next.

I was eager to read about the High Republic era, and so far it hasn't disappointed but lived up to expectations.

I see The Usual Suspects on YouTube already tearing the new high Republic apart without reading anything about it or any of the books. it's quite sad

Read up to chapter 9. Good stuff so far. I think that's actually what had already been released online, but now I'm caught up with that stuff!

I'll start after work, Force willing.

I want to like the book, only because I want to get that special edition from Out Of Print, purely for the socks and pin.

    Hello!
I let my account go dormant for years, mainly due to lack of interest in SW novels since 2012. But this new endeavor from Lucasfilm publishing has me intrigued. I'm interested to hear all of your thoughts on this new era.

Good point - after all, Hera was as surprised as anyone else that Purrgil could go into hyperspace, so she presumably means realspace collisions.

Damn, looks like I’m going to have to add this to my kindle tonight. The last SW book I read was the first Aftermath, which I quit midway through because of how awful it was. I’m really liking everything I’ve seen from this High Republic project.
