my tv is small in the bedroom, so while I like the widescreen, full screen might work better in there.

And the full screen versions are on TV anyway, like AOTC on cable is always full screen.

    But I prefer wide

The image size on the disc is not different at all between fullscreen and widescreen. Both have 720x576 for PAL or 720x480 for NTSC.
Widescreen films have a squeesed image, which is unstreched in playback, and fullscreen images are pretty much close to their original aspect ratio.

So you might think that you get more resolution in a fullscreen DVD, but you don't really. You do loose a bit resolution for cinemascope films, because of the black bars you get, but as for 1.85:1 films, you get the same number of image lines for fullscreen and widescreen releases (576 for PAL, and 480 for NTSC)

So widescreen is the obvious choice of course. You get the same vertical resolution as full screen plus you get the full image in it.

Definetly widescreen. Even if you don't like it perhaps someday you can buy a nice big TV and you wouldn't be missing any of the picture. You can point out more stuff in the background too :)

Like he said its better to buy Widescreen now even if you don't have a digital T.V then when digital T.V.'s go down in price buy one and you'll have the better film version already. Besides Just turn off all the lights in the Room and the black bars aren't as bothersome.

I used to absolutely refuse to buy WS movies because of the black bars. That was before I got my giant flat screen TV. Widescreen movies are AWESOME on a giant flat screen. My daughter has a small tube TV in her room, & when she asked to watch ROTJ on her DVD player it looked terrible. So, it all depends on the type of TV. Now, don't get me wrong, I like FS too. I just think WS is better. I also think it depends on the movie. If the movie has alot of action, then it's WS for me. If it's like a romactic comedy or anything else like that then I'll get it on FS.

I have a 20 inch TV and it's widescreen all the way for ALL DVD's. I don't have HD or a home theater system, or any "A/V-phile" stuff. I just like to preserve the original "director's vision" and all that. Like someone said before, turn the lights out and you don't notice black bars.

BobtheGoon posted a comparison between WS & FS. The black bars on my TV are only 1" on the top & bottom. Not the usual 3" to 5".

Full screen is stupid and cuts away too much. Apart from seeing the entire scene with wide screen, I also notic it has much better quality. However with that, it might be because I am comparing DVD to VCD.

After I bought the OT on DVD (widescreen of course) I noticed quite a bit. It was the first time I had seen it in widescreen and there is a LOT in it which makes it better than fullscreen.

I think fullscreen should be cheaper seeing as the quality is worse and your not getting the whole movie.

I actually think that Fullscreen should be cost more, then people would stop buying them and they wouldn't waste time and money making them fullscreen. I was mad because I bought Silence of the Lambs at Blockbuster for $10 but I found out that it was fullscreen, I went back to see if I could get a widescreen, but they were selling them for $20 and I would have had to to pay them an extra $10. I also stopped by Best Buy and Circut city and the Widescreen version is $5 more, which is complete BS, it's the same movie, don't charge more because we are smarter then the people buying Fullscreen.

For non Star Wars movies I don't care if its full or widescreen. But, Star Wars come on why would you want to cut off parts of the shot.

Anamorphic Widecreen! If I had a little more money, I would buy the Fullscreen version but not open it.

Widescreen. I've always preferred that over everything else.
