But to be fair, that is why they have these helmets in the first place. Stormtroopers were always meant to be a faceless threat, devoid of individuality, enforcing the will of the genocidal regime without remorse. And that is not too unrealistic; it is a rather common trait of dictatorships that citizens give up individual freedoms willingly to blend in, in exchange for personal safety, benefits etc. Adding to it indoctrination, military drill, stress and other psychological factors easily produces a kind of soldier that is not the citizen soldier of modern western democracies. Sure the Stormtroopers still can be admirable soldiers displaying great comradship, loyalty, and bravery. In fact, I believe they should display these qualities on screen like Clones did.

But make no mistake: they are still nothing but the tool of an evil dictator, and their only job is galaxy-wide oppression. I know many Star Wars fans like the Empire, and want it to be characterized with more sympathy, but I think this is a very dangerous path to follow. ("Look, the Empire's soldiers are just average-joes like you and me"; "They just follow orders" *Urgh*; "Look, they have female officers, so they are not sexist"; "Look, they have alien officers, so they are not xenophobic"; "Oh, did I mention the Rebellion is not all that good?"; "At least the Empire brought order and peace to the Galaxy" etc.).
A very dangerous line of thought.

Only if they make him a nemesis for Kanan and downplay the TFU insanity!

Might be interesting to include Juno but this time instead of establishing the Rebel Alliance he's tracking down those in charge to assassinate the true figureheads making him an eventual real threat to Bail Organa's life as well as Leia!

Now that's an arc I'd like to see where we learn the Empire has been eliminating Rebel Cells but they have no idea how playing that up to make it truly scary before they introduce him on the show.

Would love to see an episode where someone is used to draw the rebels into a trap and Star killer is shown as an ally of the soon to be wiped out rebel cell as he works to close in on the true enemy but his current target is the child of a slain rebel leader her name?

    Hera Syndulla!

Cue Kanan and Ezra vs Star killer with Ahsoka helping but he escapes with knowledge that Ahsoka is another force user... cue Vader getting involved...

    That sound better to you?

You are very right in the arguments you make here. I can't find much to disagree with.

But I still think it is too simplistic to just call them automatons. It is almost very callous to present human beings as fodder for the rebels crew to slaughter in inventive and hilarious ways. If I had young kids I'm not sure if I'd be happy that they're watching the show. It is too far into the "us versus them" school of thinking for me, the idea of dehumanizing everyone who isn't part of your own tribe. In the OT at least the protagonists weren't happy about being shot at, they only defended themselves against a threat.

One of the things in the legends-EU I liked was that the rebellion commonly took in ex-Imperials and giving them a second chance. They fought the imperial forces not because every single soldier is an unfeeling death-machine that needs to be exterminated, but because it was necessary to end all the suffering in the galaxy. That's something I can get behind.

Ironically, it is the clones who have served as unthinking automatons in the prequels.

If you go by what Tarkin says, this Rebel cell has an unusually strong tendency to avoid killing, compared to other cells.

Maybe compared with Teller, but usually they're shown as railroading the imperial soldiers, they are so far above them that the stormtroopers are basically ragdolls, playthings.

"Automaton" is probably more of an unlucky choice of words than Filoni's 100% literal opinion. However I also feel that lifes are sometimes a bit too casually wasted considering it is a kids' show.
And I agree on the Clones. I was actually most disappointed that the Clones were shown as totally honourable, perfect soldiers who can never do wrong unless a chip triggers them to. But even that only in the future. While I can go along with exploring their desire for individuality, the show totally forgot that they were grown to subjugate the Galaxy, too. Instead we see them as liberators time and again.

I think you guys are talking about that kinda thing in the wrong section. I mentioned that part about stormtroopers here:

This is another good thing about the TFU which was great, the Imperials were vast and pretty damn tough, they had lots of vehicles, long range and assorted energy based melee combat weapons and defense shielding made specifically to fight Jedi-like warriors, you had a wide variety of Imperials armed with numerous different lethal weapons. Then you had Imperial Sentinels and Shadow Guards and stuff who were even more specifically there to take out Jedi-like warriors and anybody else . And Kota's Rebel Militia were also pretty tough and armed to combat evil Force users.

Star killer won't appaer any time soon because the current season 1 rebels is set in 5 BBY- 4 BBY and I can't see season 2 skipping to 2 BBY any time soon! Galen Marek will not appear because he dies straight after he joins the rebels at the hands of Darth Sidious but Starkiller may but rebels has to be set in 2 BBY for that to be possible!

    Goes back in time:

    http://www.theforce.net/podcast/story/ForceCast_Interview_With_Haden_Blackman_118171.asp

They'd most likely reboot/reimagine some of plot elements of the character/storyline - if the character does appear he'd have to fit into the new continuity. I think Filoni may add Marek in some capacity if Rebels grows into its own beast like TCW did. But I wonder if Tano is following some TFU concept story called Outlaw, some of the ideas like with she was framed by a Jedi and essentially cast out've the order. Now she's like a rogue, and perhaps she's allied with Maul and/or Ventress.

I think he will; Filoni is quite friendly to the EU and using it's untapped ideas and concepts. Would be huge mistake if Glenn Marek is not used in some capacity; was such a big character from this era, so I cannot see Filoni allowing to go to the decanon grave without attempting to retcon him.

I say he turns into a ventress type character meaning he is Vader's personal Assassin/Apprentice.

    Quite.

If, and I think they will, give Vader an apprentice/assassin - it makes sense to use Glenn Marek.

I'd love for any TFU characters to show up in Rebels. Especially Starkiller.

But to be entirely honest, I have about 0% faith in that ever happening. Maybe it's just a hunch, but I feel as though Lucasfilm is going to gloss right over the TFU franchise, and act as if it never even happened. At least as far as making any element of it canon, that is.

    As I say, I hope I'm wrong.

I sense his imminent return. Perhaps with all the Inquisitor's wiped out, it would make for an ideal time for Vader to try and assassinate Palpatine. Likely Marek will be an Inquisitor, he was described as an "attack dog" in the making of book which is how Filoni described the Inquisitors.

Yea I even posted them, but if they'll be killed off and they dwindle down each season, it makes Vader that much more powerful as there is less of the Emperor's agents around.
