I hope Universal counts DVD sales towards making the sequel. If not, like everyone says, at least we got closure. M. Scott
This is just giving me more and more of a reason not to like Star Wars now. Because if no one wants anymore films set in space for a long time (on the scale of SW/Serenity/etc.) then I'll be highly dissapointed and will hate Star Wars more than I do right now.
Come on British citizens! Do like you did with The Island, make it so a great movie like this isn't a major flop! Please? I really hate to beg, it takes a lot for me to do it like this.
Valkor - it was filmed in and around Los Angeles. Joss made it a point to keep the picture local to use the best talented crew possible. I believe the Reaver chase scene was filmed at the Diamond Bar Ranch. read about it here: http://www.latimes.com/business/custom/cotown/cl-ca-homefront9oct09,0,2056150.htmlstory?coll=la-story-footer
i don't think that Firefly fans are 'culturally isolated' - from what i've seen in my area - browncoats tend also to fit into these fan groups: ren faire / SCA , sci-fi channel shows (stargate, BSG, etc.), buffy/angel, and general genre shows. i've seen browncoats with a booth at comic-con. perhaps a few differences between the browncoats that i've met compared to the usual sci-fi movie demographic... -- browncoats tend to have more women than the usual target demographic. (my local BC chapter is pretty evenly split genderwise while my fan force chapter is predominantly male (probably 75% or more) -- browncoats tend to be a little older than the usual target sci-fi movie demographic. not really hitting the teenagers, but hitting the twenty- and thirty-somethings. unfortunately, teenagers tend to be more the target audience for sci-fi movies. luckily, i've mananged to hype serenity up enough that most of my fan force chapter has seen it, some multiple times.
Yeah, the Browncoats are a rather odd group. They seem a lot more vocal than others, such as Star Wars fans or Star Trek Fans.
And ANOTHER thing I don`t understand - I haven`t read any BAD reviews of Serenity, every single one I`ve read has been totally praising it! What`s the deal?!?
Reviews have little to do with BO success. Dare I say we have a sleeper hit on our hands? A movie well reviewed by all but that not enough people saw? They tend to do remarkably well on DVD. And we've seen how much DVD sales have had to do with the success of this movie in the past... ...kind of grasping at straws of hope here...
A lot of movies get great reviews, and nobody sees them. I think it was William Goldman who once said, when it comes to what the movie audience will come out to see: "Nobody knows anything." True, unfortunately.
American Audience: What was that? AA #2 Did you see that? AA #1 Was that a sleeper movie? AA#2 (Pause) Looks like. Finally found the quote that I was looking for: "You know what the first rule of flying is? Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take a boat in the air you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of worlds. Love keeps her in the air when she ought to fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home."
I finally saw it (though I didn't get a chance to watch Firefly first ) and I loved it. I enjoyed it just as much, if not more, than RotS. I'll be picking this one up on DVD.
I wonder if the movie will increase the sales of the DVD? I expect they won't reissue the DVD with the movie, though.
I loved that part. It reminded me of the end of Out of Gas, where Mal first sees Serenity while the salesman is trying to push another ship. Awesome.
It did. I don't know what it is currently, but the day that the movie was released, it jumped from #7 on amazon.com to #3. Might have gone higher.
there might be some licensing issues between studios to try to combine the Serenity DVD with Firefly DVDs for one box set... can't remember if i mentioned it here or not... in the beginning when we watch the story of earth-that-was, you see a flash of light and a boom corresponding for each ship launch.. almost. there is a flash in the yucatan peninsula, but no ship is seen coming from there.. did someone try to nuke the mayan ruins?
I highly doubt that they'll re-release the Firefly boxed set with Serenity. The marketing issues would be just a huge pain to work out.
After seeing it for the second time (shameful, I know) and my friend seeing it for the first, we got into an argument about Reavers. We all know how they came about now, because the Pax in the air made them all teh crazy. And although this was a good amount of them, obviously there are many more now. His theory is that Reavers can only be made by being exposed to the Pax, meaning that when they boarded any ship, that .10% of the crew would become crazy. Mine is that anyone who sees the insanity the Reavers are capable of can turn into one, because that's the only way they can face what they've seen. In Bushwhacked, this theory is supported because they say the guy cut on himself to deal with his pain (seeing your family raped is a situation in which you're allowed to be Emo). This makes sense, just like some crazy people here on Earth just have mental, and not chemical problems. The Pax theory says that he was somehow exposed to the chemical (which the Reavers somehow carry around on their ships and in their systems, and became crazy). This makes no sense cause the crew of Serenity has encountered Revears a number of times and haven't been affected. Also, only affecting .10% of any ship's crew would mean it would take a long long time for the Reavers to grow to the numbers they now have. So, who's right? He's gonna come charging into this thread soon. Don't believe a word he says.
Well since our intrepid heroes were not harmed or affected by the Pax on Miranda when they set foot on the world, I can only assume that the air is now safe. Therefore the Reavers were created in the initial exposure and then moved off planet - the damage being done and not ongoing. So, assuming that the air aboard Reaver ships is now just normal air then the only way to create new reavers would be as explained in Bushwacked. If that rarely happens (which seems to be the case given Jayne's comments about never leaving survivors,)and I assume that Reavers don't mate and create little Reavers, then I'm sure the Reavers will pretty much die out in a single generation.
Yeah, and I'm sure that .10% of all the population of Miranda wouldn't equal 3 million. There would've had to have been more created.
I finally saw the movie. I was on the edge of my seat for most of it due to one third having to pee and two thirds kick assery. I didn't want to buy the DVD set of the show untill I felt the story had been given some kind of closure. I just hate buying unfinished stories. And now I need that dang set. Now. Not a lot of closure, but just enough. Really awesome having River be the new pilot. It works. To Balrox: We don't know how many Reavers there are though. We know there are at least 30,000 going by that 1 tenth of 1 percent bit. That's a hell of a lot right there to man enough ships to terrorize a system yet remain a force that could be a myth. Plus that whole creation story is really fraggin stupid. Even JANE didn't believe it. The guy who thinks River is a part of congress (They have a parliment) and that a Chinese word can shut him down. The stupid creation story was shot down. Why not the stupid story on how to make more of them? Neither one made much logical sense, and before the movie were both things I hated about Firefly. Now both add up. You're right that the Firefly crew has been exposed plenty of times. But if it's just in their DNA to not be effected by the Pax, or that it has to be over a period of time, than it still adds up that none of them became Reavers. For all we know that thing Kaylee got shot full of was Pax. The Reavers could have the Pax in their blood. It could have quickly died off once it no longer had any host on the planet. But the Reavers took it with them and became the hosts. They could still be infecting ships as they board them, and the seemingly rare planetary invasion. Since they kill off everybody alive in an area the Pax could just not have time to take hold. Most people seem to want to avoid Reaver sites. -P!-
