I'm looking for some stock footage of Apache helicopters as well as other war footage. Is there any online resources? Also I'm looking for some free 3d models but in Maya format. I've found loads in 3d Studio Max format, but not Maya!

    Thanks

On scifi3d there are loads of models in eitehr Maya's OBJ format or the .3ds format.

Maya can import .3ds models. You just have to load the plugin.

If you don't know how --->

go to window--->settings/prefs--->plugin manager---> find the 3dsimport plugin and check load and auto-load (this will auto load the plugin on start)

    It should work now :)

(oh and the textures of most of the .3ds models will be messed up so you have to do much manual tweaking...)

Finding a good Apache model shouldn't be a problem. All of the major Autodesk apps have plugins installed that let you open other Autodesk formats.

As for the textures, yeah, the above reply is on target. Even if I find a 3DS model and open it with 3DS there is almost always something a bit off in the textures that I am not happy with.

I can give you a word of advice though since I have seen hundreds of military vehicles up close:
Use basic shaders that are good for flat paint jobs. It kills me every time I see someone showcasing their latest model of a piece of military hardware that is all shiny like a plastic toy. 99.999% of all US Military vehicles have non-glossy surfaces, that goes for painted, anodized, plated, cast, Radar-Absorbent, etc.
