Hopefully they’ll all be as staggeringly drunk as everyone was the last time they made a Mario movie.

The 90s live-action movie? That was a crime.

Unlike some of the other Nintendo properties, animation is a much better suited approach to Mario than live action, so at least it has that going for it. The others you could do in both, but Mario pretty much needs to be animated.

I used to have a job with a company that outsourced field trips for schools. We'd provide buses, a curriculum, facilitators (me), and take the kids to museums or whatever. It was a fun job, though I had to give a lot of tours of places I'd never actually been to before.

One field trip was to Austin. From Dallas. Which meant we left at 6something in the morning and would get back around 9 or 10. We had a lot of activities on the bus ride over, but on the bus ride back we would just show movies. We had exactly two movies. Despicable Me and Rio. I've seen both those movies probably 20+ times each.

To make a long story short, I have an irrational hatred of Despicable Me and Illumination.

    Trust me. It's completely rational.

No thanks. I'll stick to the Super Mario Super Show on Netflix.

Out of any film based upon a video game, I honestly respect the 1990s Mario film the most. Creatively flawed, obnoxious execution and totally off the mark. But, unlike any other video game film, it took the greatest liberties with the intellectual property and had some fun.

    The things I enjoyed:

    - Hopkins and Leguizamo did actually work well together
    - I loved the aesthetic look of the dystopian city
    - CGI/Production
    - The camp tone with the slight gritty undertones
    - The tongue in cheek performances (You know, the whole 'eh, ***k' it attitude as evidenced by the ongoing performances by the cast in the film as they had to continually work with the script)

I have no interest in any other Mario film because it will take the safest white bread approach to it: animated replication of the game we already know.

Give me the 90s film any day. I loved it.

    There, I said it.

As long as we get the iconic theme I don't care if they bring back Hoskins and Hopper's rotting corpses to play the roles.

It's officially confirmed. Miyamoto producing, Illumination animating, Universal distributing. Nintendo and Universal will co-finance.

If there’s no scene of Mario abandoning Yoshi to his death to make a jump across a wide chasm, I will insist that the theater refund my money.
