Well guys this is a SW board but we never seem to discuss some statements made in the SW Universe in the Senate, these can pertain to what goes on in our world.

So pick your favourite quote in either the EU or the PT or OT, and explain how it relates to the real world.

I'll start one of my favorites

    from the EU
Mace Windu-Shatterpoint"Jedi do not fight for peace; that is a slogan and is misleading as slogans naturally are. Jedi fight for civilization as civilization creates peace"

I find last sentence profound, as it defeats anybody who is pure a pacifist.

Look at Somalia and the mess it's been in.

Interesting word choice. The way I see it, the only way to defeat a pacifist is to provoke them into a fight. The fact that you find the quote to be a profound statement of your views in no way 'defeats' pacifism.

Pacifism is an interesting thing. In a world where there are those that will never give in to peaceful processes, wide spread pacifism would not mean much unless there was either someone to protect the peace or literally every agreed to it.

My gut reaction is to say that pacifists are dangerous fools, but my religion helps me understand otherwise. Sometimes it is better to not fight than to go over the line betweem fighting for a just cause in the right way and fighting for the wrong reasons in the wrong way. For the average person it is somewhat silly to avoid all sugar at all costs, but for a diabetic it is needed, and in the same way it would be stupid if everyone avoided war at all costs but for some they might need to do it.

The reason that I don't believe in absolute pacifism is that, as we see in the world today, sometimes you have to force people to live in peace. Look at the middle east right now.
But those that refuse to stop fighting have to be taken out, to stop innocents form dying.

Another quote from Mace AOTC "We're keepers of the peace, not soldiers"

The Jedi's goal was always to keep the peace sort of like the UN today, they would rather stay out of wars, but they get forced into them like the Jedi finally were as well.

Which is why the Jedi were such a bad institution. I don't think you would put up with a bunch of non-elected religious warrior monks enforcing international law for very long.

The Jedi Order reported to the Galactic Senate, so things work out.

In a world where aggressive action can lead to corruption and where one lives on after death, total pacifism seems the best choice.

The only good reason to defend yourself is so that you disrupt the corruption aggressors do to themselves if unopposed.

Ehh, okay....so it worked out for 4,000 or so years =P

Anyway, as for the pacifism debate, there's times when you need peaceful diplomacy, and times when you need a show of force. For example, diplomacy might work well for border disputes on some random planet, but maybe not so well against a Sith Lord bent on taking over the galaxy. You get the idea.

Well it wasn't working because we had a double agent in charge of both sides, how could it work at this point.

Now lets say you have a neutral pacifist state, and another group in another country says we don't like you because of whatever, and they begin to rain down rockets on your people how long do you sit there and remain passive 1000 dead, 5000 dead, 10,000 dead. In which case your infostructure is wiped out too, and your ability to strike back becomes limited as well.

So it would be nice if a countries could be neutral with no armies, but you would always have some radical power hungry nut job come long and ruin it all.

If you believe the ends never justify the means, then you should flee your cities and scatter yourselves. No need to strike back at all.
