Crap. Well, last time I played, this would've been a no-brainer, but now I'm reading that Stele is still flying as of FotJ. Really? That's just nutty. I'm still of the opinion that a greater amount of pure skill means a whole lot more than an experience edge (basically, a better pilot is a better pilot, even if they've flown less often), but... damn. With the skill level being as close as it is, and the experience gap being as huge as it is... wow, can't beleive I'm actually about to do this.

Well, I really only just read the blurb in his Wook article. It's only one appearance and one mission, but it's still something. Even if he hadn't flown a lick from the end of the NJO until that mission, him being able to pick up right where he left off and still be effective says a lot.

I still need to actually read it, though. I'll probably end up skimming that part of Outcast next time I'm in a book store.

 

i thought he'd been first round talent wise for a while, just couldn't really build a team around him? why i was so thrilled i managed to have him last round, because he fixed my lack of a true first after that.

I ain't said nothin' 'bout no Imperial sqaud, sir. Not saying I won't go that route, either. We'll see what's what when the time comes.

Honestly, I still think that there are too many preconceived notions in this draft about how GMs "need" to build their teams. That's the main reason that Tycho teams always seem so cookie-cutter to me. Most of the faces on them change from draft to draft, but they're still all the same. Very Rogue-heavy, little-to-nothing in the way of Force-users on them. And sure, it's worked on occasion, but that doesn't mean it's the way it always has to be. I don't see why a Tycho-led team couldn't consist mostly of Jedi, especially since there's no reason to believe that he wouldn't get along great with most of them (he's already very good friends with a nice-sized chunk).

I'm just not sure I see why the cohesion of a squad has to be built almost entirely around the first round pick in order to be seen as being very good. As far as I'm concerned, a typical first round pick could be a black spot on an otherwise stellar cohesive team, but completely and totally make up for that by being that awesome of a pilot.

Like, maybe a Gavin-led team could finally have a legit shot at winning one of these if the GMs of those Gavin teams became a little more flexible with their picking strategies instead of, you know, just settling for those good-but-not-really-good-enough Rogues that they always seem to settle for towards the end of the third round (and the start of the fourth) just because those are the ones that "fit best" with him.

I dunno. Maybe that's just me. I'm just glad that the idea of picking Wes and Hobbie back-to-back at the end of the first round being the right thing to do has gone the way of the dodo.

 

hey, i made it to the finals last time with a cohesively shot team, so i suppose you could say that i agree with you more or less. honestly, i would consider jacen and jaina on the same team if jacen was a good enough value at that spot. but yea, you're right, overall, in my book.
