So you're saying this is a theater dump? I would think they have higher aspirations when they are putting it on Thanksgiving weekend. They are banking on a Disney Princess to save their year.
Yeah, presumably they liked the work product and think they can make more money with it in the theater than via streaming.
Agreed. But it is a panicked reaction to the lineup on schedule for 2024. They must not think Inside Out 2 and the Lion King Prequel can save the year.
I have a really hard time imagining Disney trying to hedge… basically anything Lion King adjacent, that movie made approximately all of the money twice. Like dp4m said, it’s probably an upgrade to a theatrical release that then slots in nicely to a big opening they had.
I would tend to agree... ...but there it is... What I have not heard is what got bumped out. Was the Thanksgiving slot empty? Was it a release date for long cancelled Star Wars movie? Are they taking a Marvel movie and turning it into a streaming series instead? I wonder if they are pushing something forward from that date to the summer.
Well, frankly, no. "There it is" only if you assume they're releasing the film theatrically because they're worried about their other releases, rather than what I think is more likely, which is them deciding they'd rather make some solid money off of it before putting it on streaming. That's very in line with general pivots at Disney over the past year or so.
It is a marquee title for them...and the choice was made to divert from streaming exclusivity to a theatrical release. I am sure no one at Disney+ is saying "go ahead...we have enough exclusive content". Could it be a pile on? Them seeing weakness in the competition and think they can capitalize? I guess so. But such a big shift feels more need based than greed based. But I'm not a studio exec, I just play one on the internet.
There is literally already a shift underway at Disney and it's away from streaming. This is in line with the shift! It would be more surprising if something moved to streaming only, that's when I would assume they had a lack of faith in a given project.
They didn't have anything specific scheduled for that slot, just Untitled Animated Film. They always release one during that Thanksgiving period. This should be a much needed win for the animation studio since they've been releasing box office bombs since the pandemic. Outside of another Frozen film, this should do very well for them. Moana was the top streamed film on Disney+ last year.
Dune Part 2 early projections for a $65 million, possibly $80 million opening weekend, which apparently is cause for a lot of excitement. So much excitement! Granted, there was a time when nobody under any circumstances would ever have been the slightest bit impressed by a $65 million opening weekend for a major tentpole release, even considering the March release date. But that was then.
For something that is more cerebral than spectacle (though it obviously has that too), that is pretty impressive. It's like an R-rated film opening that big. It happens, but is kinda rare. BR2049 (which was both R rated and cerebral sci-fi) opened at $32m, for example. Prometheus opened at $50m. John Wick 4 (a decidedly more crowd-pleasing type film) opened at $74m.
meanwhile, from Variety: “Lisa Frankenstein” will also fall short of double digits, targeting a soft $4 million to $6 million from 3,140 theaters. However, Focus Features only spent $13 million to make the film, which may cushion any box office shortcomings. It's probably on target to make a small profit away from theaters, eventually. Reviews aren't good, but the budget is forgiving.
Again, nothing is going to matter at the box office until we get to Dune 2, which so far has a good opening weekend projection: https://deadline.com/2024/02/box-office-dune-part-two-opening-projection-1235819080/ They must be all in line to get a Dune 2 popcorn bucket.
I forgot the Dune popcorn bucket was going to drive the weekend box office up to $100 million in a textbook case of all publicity is good publicity.
I almost went to Lisa Frankenstein but would have had to lug it across town instead of 15 minute drive so t-heck with it, it's Universal it'll be on VOD in 2 and a half weeks
With the Dune popcorn bucket, you’ll never be alone at a sci fi movie again. There’s your $125 million opening weekend.
The Bob Marley movie is getting eviscerated by the critics. 35% on RT. By comparison, @Rylo Ken's favorite movie of 2023 is at a 53%
Yes and no. They can be misleading or obfuscate the bad parts. Often they're just building up constructed hype more than anything, and that is what is letting people down more than the content itself. But there's usually breadcrumbs you can pick up on when its hiding a stinker (or at least see such crumbs in retrospect). Not always though- as is apparently the case here. It's rare.
