The Barack Obama National Monument Planning Committee

As you are all well aware, it is customary in many nations, and particularly in the United States, to commemorate the greatest leaders with monuments of some kind. I trust you are all familiar with Mt. Rushmore, the Washington Monument, and the Lincoln Memorial, to name a few. Given who will become the 44th President of the United States, I think it is clear by comparison that we will need to start planning another such site, whose relative splendor is concordant to the greatness of his contribution relative to other commemorated figures. In light of the demanding nature of this task, I feel we should begin now, and that it is if anything too late. Therefore, I am pleased to begin taking suggestions for the Obama National Monument.

In making your recommendations, please consider the following:

1. Location- While the most obvious choice would be National Mall, might other locations be more fitting? Also, should we consider bull-dozing some less important structures to make way for this one? There'd hardly be a less potent symbol of "change."

2. Funding- While it's obvious that public funding should and will be used, circumstances here are extraordinary. In particular, I am sure the citizenry will want to have ways to express their gratitude to his Excellency. Should we therefore accept private donations? In-kind labor/material contributions?

3. Historic Value- Barring any wildly unforeseen calamity, the ensuing eight years will probably mark this country's definitive Golden Age, and the apex of its power and prestige in the world. Thus, much like Rameses II's temple at Abu Simbel, Pericles's Parthenon, or Suleiman the Magnificent's Blue Mosque, this monument will probably become the definitive symbol of the US for historians in coming centuries. We should therefore take care with what sort of long-term image we want to project

4. Information Value- To what extent should the monument inform visitors of the great deeds of his Excellency? The Lincoln Memorial, for instance, does a fair amount, whereas others have very little readily apparent. If we choose to catalogue his memorable acts, how will we be able to provide enough space to accommodate this?

Still, this a historic moment, even if he loses he'll be more famous than McCain.

I Disagree with 3 big time. As Electing him would mark Amercian voters achievement. Not his. It Symbolzies finally living up to our old axiom. "All mean are created equal"

The reason I'm laughing is because no one in this thread said socialism is good. Therefore, since I don't think socialism is good, I can't tell you why socialism is good.

Seriously now. Obama will get his own monment or libary. The libary sounds more apporatie as well as this is a civil rights achievement that only King could dream of.

I made 23000 dollars last year, I have a few things I can deduct, gives me about 1350 dollars a month.

You misunderstand--this isn't a monument to his getting elected. This is a monument to the wholly unparalleled and incomparable success that is his Presidency, and the historically unique age of peace and prosperity that it will usher in.
