Thanks for the answer, Matt. Just a little curious there.

I'm not sure if we should take the number of walkers at Hoth in a video game at face value- they tend to use larger numbers for tougher challenges (ie: the number of AT-ST's seems grossly exxagerated).

Well, I think we should as most of the AT ATs in the game are supposed to be untouched. You take out only three or so.

I'll tell you why weshould take it at face value.

The Galactic Battlegrounds databank says that most of Blizzard Force AT ATs survived because of Veer's tactics. If not for him the force could have suffered catastrophic loss. Now if we assume there were only six AT ATs and three were destroyed (one by Wedge, one by Dash REndar, one by Hobbie) that means half the AT AT force was trashed and would contradict the GBGs databank because I'd say that the losses were pretty bad wouldn't you?

The Rebel Era sourcebook says a squadron of AT ATs was landed on Hoth. Though it doesn't have to be, a squad in Star Wars is usually 12. If we assume that 12 walkers were landed that means only 1/4 of the AT AT force was destroyed. This fits nicely with the info in the GBGs databank.

So, I think in this case we should take the game at face value. Most of those walkers are for show after all and not meant to be destroyed.

And yes, the GBG databank was referring to the AT ATs only, not the entire Blizzard Force.

Yes, in Rogue Leader the game won't let you touch most of the walkers, it automatically switches objectives after you take out about 3 of them (a 4th was taken out in a cutscene). If you take too long trying to take out more, the game goes to a game over, because you weren't following the objectives.

I don't think the AT-STs were exaggerated in the game at all, as most are behind the mountain where they aren't visible in the movie, and they are the only things attacking the Beta Outpost Ion Cannon which is part of the story in the game.

There are only about 6 near where the Shield Generator is located on the other side of the mountain from where Beta Outpost is located, in a similar setup as shown in NEGTVV, around 5 of the AT-ATs (4 after the cutscene).

Just re-watched the scene in ESB that introduces Death Squadron.

There are at least SIX Star Destroyers present on screen at once, obviously not including the Executor. I'd be inclined to say there are seven ISDs based on a different camera angle, but it's possible it was just showing two of the previously mentioned six.

This supports the existence of the Corrupter within the taskforce.

The force we see on screen is only the centerpiece of the Fleet. Death Squadron was huge and not all ships in it are seen.

Also it's possible Corrupter wasn't even a part of Death Squad but was called in fromthe local sector fleet to assist Death Squad.

I was certain I had read somewhere that the ISDs WERE the centerpiece, and that smaller ships simply weren't shown.

Also, i am inclined to believe that the ISD in the opening of XWA is not the Avenger. In a later part of the Battle of Hoth, General Rieekan says that he doesn't think they can protect two transports at a time, which would imply that they allowed the Otana to leave only after the first transport had already escaped, instead of simultaneously.

In fact, that Star Destroyer may have been the Corrupter itself.

That very well could have been Corrupter. I never thought of that.

It can't be Avenger as one of its shield generators blow. The shield generators of Avenger remained inrtact when it was hit.

It has to be the Corrupter. I remember that it was the Star Destroyer that ended up capturing the Azzameen Home Base, and in the Prologue End Cutscene, and it had a shield dome missing.

Perhaps at this point we should expand this thread beyond Blizzard and Rogues, and create a sublisting for the ships involved?

According to the ESB manga a total of 12 speeders can be seen leaving the main base during a wideview shot, assuming each has a pilot and a gunner...

I'm all for it. There has to be a plethora of EU giving names of people and ships who fought at Hoth.

Potentially, it could get nearly as large as the Endor thread.

Well shipwise, IIRC a pair of MC-80 Star Cruisers was assigned to the system, but they did not participate in the actual battle.

I think they were the Maria and the [/i]Cathleen[/i]. Possibly the Liberty as well.

    Possibly the Liberty as well.

I don't think so. Wasn't it leading an investigation of the robot TIE's at the time?

Going to add soldiers on the ground, and in the base as well?

Didn't the Insider do a recent article about that? But for now, here's what we know.

    Rebels

    Cal Alder: Scout.
    Carlist Rieekan: Overall Base Commander.
    Jeroen Webb
    Bren Derlin: Ground Troop Commander.
Romas "Lock" Navander: Sensor Officer. Detected Approach Of Death Squadron.
    Shawn Valdez: Evacuation Commander
    Tamizander Rey: Deck Officer.
    Tigran Jamiro: Logistics Officer.
    Toryn Farr: Chief Communications Officer
    Wyron Serper: Chief Sensor Officer.

    Imperials

Brenn Tantor: Directed Blizzard Force to Echo Base via BHCI onboard Executor.
Maxillian Veers: Blizzard Force Commander. Led Assault From Onboard Blizzard 1.
Commander Igar: Part Of Blizzard Force. Survived Battle And Became Commander Of Tempest Force At Endor.

Grand General Brashin was also onboard the Executor. He and Vader gave Brenn his briefing before the mission.

Oh, and Lieutenant Cabbel onboard the Tyrant as well.

Ground and base forces? Why not?

There are a ton though, I'll go dig through what I can find since I tried to reference as many as I could in my Fire and Ice example screenplay.

Decipher's CCG has a ton of Executor personel in their Dagobah expansion as well.

Quest, I *loved* the Fire and Ice screenplay. It was cool to see how Hobbie's mishaps could be worked into the battle, and the brief scene with Dash Rendar and the AT-AAs sent fanboyish chills up my spine. :)

    Thanks :D

Yeah, it was fun to do, because I just love the Hoth battle in general, and there are so many smaller heroic moments we always read about that are very satisfying to integrate (if even only in a fanfic kinda way), plus it was challenging to make sure any new dialogue or scenes fit inbetween the movie's camera edits so that it theoretically could be looked at as an extended version of the same footage.

And Dash is a blast to write ::)

We have some new info from ITWOFSWT:

-Zev's gunner is named Kit Valent

-Nevar's rank is Brig. General, and did lead Blizzard 2.

-Blizzard 4 was commanded by Col. Starck

-Blizzard 2 is the walker tripped by Wedge

-Blizzard 4 is the walker sabotaged by Luke

(which, I imagine, leaves Blizzard 5 or 3 left for Dash)

-AT-PT's and AT-AR's (AR=Advance Raider) were also a part of Blizzard Force.

-There were at least 9 Blizzard Walkers: Blizzards 6, 8 & 9 broke off from the main group (a mountain range between them and Veer's main group) to directly attack the remnants of the hangar defense trenches - this is likely the group the smaller walkers accompanied. (GBG reference?)

-Blizzard 4 leads an AT-AT group after landing through a more direct but treacherous route through a valley in an attempt to impress Vader. Three walkers are lost during this attempt before they retreat to a more managable route with the rest of the Blizzard Force. I'd assume Blizzard 7 and possibly Blizzard 10 (assuming two groups of 5 AT-AT's) were among these losses.

Hopefully I can revsie and update my Hoth battle analysis to factor this info in soon.

I guess that makes Igar commander of Blizzard 3, then.

As an aside, I was wondering when someone would add the info from that book here.

    So where was Colonel(?) Covell?

He was supposed to have been in charge of a walker that went down at the battle.
