ST The big space battle: Will it be like Rogue One? Or Force Awakens?

I'm hoping at least for lots of meaty capital ship destruction--and to top things from prior trilogies, a three-way battle between the FO, the Resistance, and whatever this new armada of ISDs is. If this really is the end of the Skywalker Saga, JJ should at least try to pull out all the stops.

 

I would love it if Grand Admiral Thrawn commands the Unknown Region Fleet. How old would he be? And is there a canonical source of how long a Chiss can live?

 

No, but with what happens in Rebels I doubt he'd be around to be given that command.

 

I truly hope it'll be on the scale of the battles of Coruscant, Scarif and Endor.

 

He did survive. Though we don’t know what happened to him. Would the Emperor take him back?

I think we can all agree that Rogue One is the gold standard for space battles. So obviously more that than TFA. But it also needs to distinguish itself. The way I’d do it is by mixing ships in space with space-walking/ space-jetting troops fighting outside of their ships in zero G.

 

I still prefer RotJ space battle to Rogue One, awesome as that was too. Rogue just had the benefit of all the shiney CG tech and Edwards trying different types of shots.

But yeah, basically anything with some scale here will be much appreciated.

 

To me, the Rogue One space battle was great because of the camera work and the way the ships moved. There were a couple of stunning long tracking X-Wing shots in that (when they first converge on the shield gate, and after one of them blows up a Destroyer shield dome). This is what I hope JJ has adopted for IX. Less pew pew video gamey action like the attack on Starkiller, more deliberate sweeping action moves you can focus on and remember years down the line.

 

Combining both the space battles of Rogue One and Revenge of The Sith would be awesome, I must say... Along with some crazy individual stealth attacks like what Poe did to the FO Dreadnaught’s turrets (opening scenes of TLJ)...

Can’t wait to see how the revived-but-kinda-small Resistance fleet take on the might of the Star Destroyers... A David taking on Goliath, brain vs. brawn scenario will be in action here!

 

Just a shame no B-Wings.

No problem. Curious, though. What made you think there were definitely no B-wings?

 

I just assumed based on that leaked poster a while back that clearly laid out X Y and A Wings, plus I've not seen it mentioned on Youtube, so I just assumed it wasn't in.

 

Maybe because Dark Rey took more of the attention away. We don't know if they're the classic ones or upgraded versions though.

 

I couldn't finish season 1, let alone start season 2. STD was painfully awful in about every way imaginable IMHO. It's just plain bad.

The "trap" sequence was chilling and I also get goosebumps in the scene right after the shield generator blows and Lando leads the charge towards the DSII. That scene of the Falcon flying towards the trench followed by the other star-fighters is absolutely awesome and gets me pumped to this very day.

 

if i were to bet....following the way this trilogy has ripped off the OT. This battle will try to copy ROTJ.

Wouldn't be the worst thing to rip off really. The Battle of Endor has style. It's simply ridiculously cool. I think the technological limitations at the time had a positive effect on that.

 

TFA already did Endor's tunnel sequence, they need to do something else.

 

It’s the end of the saga, so it’ll be a mishmash of every battle in every film. Which means Mon Cals flying yellow space AT-ATs through gungan-controlled Death Stars covered in buzz droids.

 

The best battle of the series so far is the Battle of Endor and it's not even close.

 

To me there are two criteria with battles: Scale and structure.

In all the space battles from films so far, nothing has topped Coruscant for scale, and nothing has topped Yavin for structure.
