Personally, ever since I heard the word "balance" used with Anakin, I immediately imagined that it meant the Jedi had to be taken out as well, setting the Force back to "zero," so to say. It just seems too coincidental to me that Anakin keeps hitting emotionally traumatizing obstacles again and again. I could accept the idea that he was a slave once, and we could work with having to leave his mother. But having Qui Gon die so that Anakin winds up trained by an inexperienced Knight? Returning Tatooine just a day too late to save her? Not having Yoda say anything to him after the incident he sensed on Tatooine? Having to deal with what he envisions in ROTS? And for the past ten years, letting him sit right under the direct influence of the Sith? Seems awfully fishy to me to say the Force didn't have plans for the Jedi as well. (Interestingly enough, I notice alot of EU fans prescribe to this theory, while film-only fans think it's only Sideous throwing things out of a whack.)

RE: The kids...If the Force is an ethereal entity, it may not view it as "child" and then "adult." It might just put all force users on the same page, and thus treat them with the same destiny. It's harsh thinking, sure, but it does hold some logic.

Many times its been noted (in cultures, tv, movies, etc) that good and evil must always be in balance. One cannot outway the other. I think since there were thousands of Jedi (aka good) and two sith (aka bad) that the galaxy was imbalanced. The balance in the Force was distrubed because there was too much of one kind. I know its sounds strange but this theory pops up a lot, espcially in sci-fi that too much of one or the other leads to diaster.

I think the Jedi mistook what "bring balance to the force" meant. They probably thought it would work in their favor.

But with Anakin's murder of Jedi and many of them died in the Clone Wars. There were two sith (Palpatine and Vader) and then two known jedi (Obi-Wan and Yoda) in the OT. No other Jedi (besides Luke's traning) is ever mentioned in the OT.

So then perhaps the Force was back in balance. Good and evil (in terms of the Force) were now back on equal footing.

    Just my theory.

yes you are right the Jedi order had lost contact with the true nature of the force mainly because of their fear. when anakin came around they feared him so they did not train him right and thus he feel unguided into the hands of the sith, so they brought about their own fall but the force worked to do this through anakin so the jedi would join with the true nature of the force and to destroy the sith

Ive actually always believed that Anakin did in fact fulfill his prophecy. After ROTJ the force is in balance? Is it not???

As the chosen one by prophesy - Anakin was to bring balance to the force though it appears the Jedi were unaware of the how...

Anakin as a properly guided Jedi would no doubt be able to attain to the rank of master and be on the Jedi council.

Had the events surrounding EP3 gone differently(with an outcome that ended the Sith there and then) perhaps the Jedi Council would've considered some of their areas of weakness and done something about it.

Yoda certainly should've been the one training Anakin(not Obi-Wan) no matter the "oath" to Qui-Gon.

The story of Anakins' fall and redemption tie in throughout the saga allows for all the suspense and other factors allowing a six-part story.

Had things been more ideal i.e. Anakin receives better training and guidance and the Sith fall at the end of EP3 it would be a boring story really with no conflict and need for things to connect.

All myths have a struggle for the hero character, which is Anakin and by extension - Luke.

These two trilogies showing us the mirrors of each ones life choices and how they impact on the overall galaxy they live in.

Balance was simply the destruction of the Sith.
The Jedi and Sith are NOT the only people in the galaxy and everyone else also works to the Force's will...but the Sith are TOO evil, too foul, they use the Force for ends that throw things out of whack. The Old Order had its issues, but destroying them was a huge problem...if they allowed everyone to do as they would, we'd have a helluva lot more mores and genocides.
When the Sith are gone, balance is restored. THAT is Anakin's destiny

^ I agree. The sith were always around lurking in the shadows. Anakin got rid of them for good by sacrificing himself.

I also think the JEdi were a little uptight about love. Because they never let jedi go out and experience things; they became weak to emotions such as with Anakin. Maybe Luke will get married and teach Jedi to get to know their feelings better and thus be better able to resist them. Notice how the Jedi don't really even teach Anakin anything about the dark side; they just say don't do it.

Wheras in ESB, they let Luke learn about it. In the same way, now Jedi can experience love and the stream of humanity.

But think about what kicked Luke over the edge...
It wasn't romantic love, it was platonic love... The most sincere kind, He would kill Vader before Vader would get a chance to hurt Leia.

His anger caused him to be a better fighter, and his strength against the dark side made him too powerful a jedi to be turned.

I have said in another thread that I think Luke is the chosen one, and Anakin is the one to bring balance, not by his actions as a jedi, but by his actions as a father.

The only way it could be concluded that Anakin was the chosen one, would be if the following were true.

    a) He took a dive in ROTJ.
    b) He let Luke win, knowing that Luke would not be turned.
    c) He knew that it was unlikely that Luke could defeat Sideous' force lightning, so he had planned to kill Sideous from the beginning.

I consider these things as having been planned by Darth Vader to be too dependent of unforseen variables to be reasonable. ON the other hand, if Luke is the chosen one, then all of these things are the result of the chosen one fulfilling his destiny.

These are just my opinions, and I know they don't jibe with GL, but that's ok, it's a series of movies, not a religion.

    Peace.

    Question for EU fans:

If Anakin's destiny included destroying the Jedi and the Sith, bringing the Force back to 'zero' (I know, one Jedi isn't zero, but it's a lot closer than thousands), what happens when Luke rebuilds the Jedi Order? Is the Force now out of wack again? Will there be another Vader somewhere along the line?

I wonder about the wording of the prophecy - it's clear Anakin had a destiny, but it doesn't seem to have much to do with balance, or at least the definition of balance is something a little bit different from what we understand, something that aparently eludes us. But if the Jedi misunderstood the prophecy so much that they were caught unawares by Anakin's fall (in spite of knowing he was the Chosen One), maybe they had the wrong word in that phrase?

More than anything, the thing that I see that was purged when the old Jedi Order was destroyed was a sort of closed-mindedness. "Jedi don't marry because Jedi don't marry," for example. I know the reasons for it are more complicated than that, but essentially the Jedi order was unwilling to consider that there could be an alternative. But it's bigger than that too - seeing Anakin's fall is appaling in one way: the Jedi couldn't see Anakin's emosional turmoil, anger, angst etc, or at least how strong it was and how much it guided his actions - but these masters of the living Force, with abilities to sense emosion etc that we mortals can only dream of, they DIDN'T...I don't know, reach out, help him heal. THEY NEVER GOT THROUGH TO ANAKIN. It's like they kept their attention on the big picture(the Republic/galaxy) because the little picture, the immediate one was too difficult to deal with. They were making a difference (I say that's one of the highest states of being any person aspires to) on the grand scheme of things, but only surviving (the smallest thing we are capable of) in their immediate surroundings. In the extended universe, Luke is constantly having to deal with himself and who he is. What I mean is that he is constantly forced to look at himself and understand himself better and be true to himself because it's something in him that stands in the way of acheiving his objective. I don't see that kind of...personal responsibility, I'll call it... in the old Jedi order. I think that's what Anakin existed to bring back. If we can fit that into the word 'balance', great!

I'm waxing eloquent here because I think this whole discussion is an effort to define 'balance' as the word is used in the prophecy. Also, this is my first post and I'm just a little excited to be here (can you tell?;)

Qui-Gon Jinn is not as old as Yoda. yoda is exactly 800 and something years old, now let's compare that to Quin-Gon Jinn a mere human to a alien.
