So this will be filled with new art covering all the major events in Star Wars including the EU. Including possibly more origonal art of Thrawn?

    Did I get that right?

If so I'll definately be taking a look at this. :D

EDIT: And the possibility of decent Dark Empire art!? :D

Amazon has a preview, which includes some TotJ stuff, and part of the index. Kind of interesting... [face_thinking]

I don't like that they're reviewing the big collections of non-congruent stuff (ie, the Clone Wars Volumes) in a single entry.

With over three dozen SW comics, this is mostly for newcomers.

Ex - what do you mean by that ? Is the Comics Companion not actually comprehensive ? I myself only have a handful of TPBs (mostly CW) and while i do read summaries, i was planning on getting this one to get a better feel for the many comics. As you know, in Aus dollars this would mean a significant investment, so please let me know if it's not actually worth it.

Hang on, if it ships Feb 8 (tomorrow), how on earth did you get your hands on it ?

You're reading too much into my omniscience. [face_laugh]

From what the preview pages tell me, this is a detailed timeline summary of comics with selected artwork from selected comics, with a bit of new pictures.

It's aimed at the consumer interested in buying comics and knowing what is where. The artistry team is also provided for each issue. As someone with most of the comics and sound lore, I have no need for this chronological compendium.

The series era: TOTJ, Classic Marvel, Ongoing, Republic, Empire, Clone War, Rogue Squadron, and in time to come, KOTOR, Legacy and Rebellion.

I bought it yesterday, and indeed, it is quite extensive on most Dark Horse SW comics. I recommend it to anyone wanting to get into the comics or anyone who wants a good guide to them.

All I want to know is, can it be used as a substitute for reading the comics?
I want to know about the important events in the comics without having to actually buy each and every one of them to do it.
Unfortunately the library doesn't carry a lot of comics or TPB's.

If you see Sparknotes as a substitute for reading a classic novel or play, then yes, it's a substitute. It'll get you by, and it'll probably be enough so that you can be conversant in most conversations about comic book plots. But it just ain't the same...

Here's a reverse question: if you have every comic yet published, is this thing worth getting? I.e., does it add anything new at all?

IMHO, no. If you already have every comic -- or even if you have every trade -- it may not be worth your time. We created the book as kind of a "Cliff Notes" for what has happened in the stories we have told, who the characters were, which creators worked on which books, etc. It was created with the newer reader in mind (since so many of our individual comic books are difficult to find, and even some of the trade collections are out of print).

See the never-ending discussion I'm having with the numbskull on the Dark Horse boards who seems to think that what we said we were producing is different than what the book actually is.

What it is not is a 200-page timeline with every story extensively labeled as to when and where it took place. It can be a useful reminder for what took place, but it's not a dissection of the when and where of every single comic we've ever produced.

It has some new art, though, doesn't it?

How does this compare to that Panel to Panel one?

Sorry -- no new art (other than the cover).

The whole book really is story-centric. Timeline placements for each story are given, but they're no more specific than what is in any of the comics or trade collections. That's not to say the book isn't an entertaining read in it's own right -- and there are quite a few continuity points and facts that are pulled out and highlighted, but its purpose is really to serve as a primer for new readers (or readers who don't have access to all of the trade collections), not a research tool for historians.

Also, if anyone was offended by my characterization of the poster on our boards as a "numbskull," I apologize. I'm not saying he isn't obtuse or willfully stupid, I just want everyone here to know that I didn't mean to offend any of you.

    :)

No new art? Then Amazon is in error.
