I have a feeling that David Lynch's The Straight Story is one of the upcoming Disney-on-Criterion titles. He supervised the restoration for StudioCanal's 4K/Blu-ray set. Perhaps a Criterion edition is around the bend.
It’s merely good and I will die on this hill that will destroy your tractor’s brakes thus necessitating a long stop in a town full of understanding people.
Good news if you've ever thought about visiting the closet. https://www.criterion.com/current/posts/8593-the-criterion-closet-is-hitting-the-road
Oh, I'm getting the keys to that. I'm already drawing up the plans for the perfect heist, Danny Ocean style. That is coming home with me.
That's pretty cool. But also too soon, gah. Not sure I could afford another trip to the city for that and still have cash left over to splurge on closet titles, what with NYCC on the near horizon.
Bill Hader returns to the closest: And here's his original video (though basically recapped in the new one):
I picked up a copy of "Straw Dogs" and "The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp" last week. Now I'm going to have to spend even more. CC is ruthless.
Was at my local B&N last night, and didn't make it past the Criterion section. Picked up... Godzilla 4K Seven Samurai 4K The Princess Bride 4K Scarface 4K And I'm sure I'll be going back for more. These 50% off sales are bad for me.
Last night I picked up... McCabe & Mrs. Miller 4K Demon Pond 4K Barnes & Noble is like a Siren's song.
Demon Pond in 4K deserves to become a thread meme but only because more people need to watch Demon Pond. Preferably in 4K.
Glad to see the praise for Demon Pond.... it's one of the blind buys I picked up last weekend. I also brought home: Real Life (4K) Werckmeister Harmonies (4K) A Story of Floating Weeds & Floating Weeds (BD) Show Boat (BD) The Learning Tree (BD) Mirror (BD) The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (BD) Blast of Silence (BD) I've always been baffled by the Criterion Closet videos. All of the people select films that they "love" or "cherish", or "had such a huge influence" on their career. Are they simply grabbing them to upgrade from DVD? I'm aware they are effectively influencing our own purchases. Heck, they're even influencing other Closet guests..... last week, three people picked Paris is Burning, probably because they watched other people pick it. There was another film, can't recall, where it was picked by a few people within a couple of weeks. I would be the worst person to feature, because I would only be picking titles I've never watched before. I just remembered a title that I was going to get this round, but will just wait for next time.... the Val Lawton production double-feature 4K release of I Walked with a Zombie & The Seventh Victim.
At the risk of breaking the kayfabe the whole point is really just the advertising. Criterion probably does give them any of the titles they don’t already own but have selected as a thank you present, but because the anecdotes about the films are the valuable part, they’re never going to show - and may explicitly discourage - an extended string of “Oh I’ve never seen [whatever], let me snag that.”
