I would think the expense for games now would also have a bit to do with rising development costs.

Exactly. The production cost of video games has gone up exponentially over the last several years, with some games budgets rivialing major movie productions. Although Microsoft does see a piece of the game sales it is typically the publisher (who laid out the money for the game development in the first place) that reaps the rewards of a popular game and the losses of a failed game.

Also, when compared to other forms of entertainment Video games are relatively cheap:

Video game (Avg) $50/25 hours of game play. That's 2 dollars per hour
Movie (avg) $9/2 hours. That's $4.50 per hour
Basball Game (Avg) $40/3 hours That's 13.33 per hour

Ok, having been out of the video game loop for a while and trying to get back in, I was under the impression that the Xbox had the best graphics of the three?

The original Xbox was far and away the superior machine graphically when compared to PS2 and GC. The fact that ports such as Half-life 2 weren't even attempted on the other systems should give you an idea of the power of the org Xbox. In addition, it had the added benfit of a year's worth of technological developemnt after PS2 came out. Interstingly enough PS3 will share a similiar advantge when sony release in the spring.

It depends on the game but X-Box has the best potential graphics capabilities of the three machines. Usually the GCN and XB ports of multi-platform titles end up being about the same, graphics wise (usually with an edge towards frame rate for GCN and an edge towards textures on XB) and obviously some GCN titles took full advantage of the hardware and exceeded the graphics quality of most XB games, but then an XB title that took full advantage of that system would usually edge out GCN games.

Well, later in its cycle N64 games went down. But first party games, were in the 60+ range here in the US at least.

I paid 60 bucks for Zelda and Majoras Mask and 70 bucks for Mario.

But yet I paid 50 bucks for Jet Force Gemini and Goldeneye and Banjo.

But while production values have risen... 60 bucks is pushing, especially as you are pushing a very expensive system.

100 bucks for two games... but with Xbox... over 100 bucks now. And I dislike that.

I definitely do not recall seeing games cost that much, but it could be dependent on the store.

Shadows of The Empire was expensive -_-

I bought it used at Blockbuster.

But it's not an unseen thing. While most SNES and Genesis games were 50 bucks... some games, such as Phantasy Star 2, Earthbound and Final Fantasy 3 cost 60 bucks due to the memory size -_-

I do recall some older games hitting 60 due to the chips- but 80? I've only seen used games go that high, not new ones.

No, he's saying over $100 for two games is alot, and that over $100 for two games on top of th cost of an X-Box is pushing it even more.

I have a feeling Rev titles will not be over 50 bucks and the system will be 200 dollars just like the GameCube, N64, SNES and NES. If it passes 200... highest would probably be 250.

Should have gotten the GameCube for the games, not the DVD :)

Honestly, while it's nice that PS2 and Xbox can play dvd's... the reason for buying any of those systems should be the games. I rather buy a quality dvd player. I never once used the dvd on my PS2 or Xbox. I used my player, which was a Toshiba that cost me 120 dollars and beats the pants out of the game system dvd players in audio/visual and has progressive scan, DTS, etc, etc.

Honestly, there are 50-75 dollar players from solid brands that are superior to game system players.

    Yeah, I'll always take a stand-alone player for DVD's over a multi-function machine anyday.

I think, though I could be wrong, that GCN launched at $250.

Yeah, I got mine for about $300 with taxes and whatnot, but I assumed that's just because of Canadian prices.

And I wasn't aware console DVD players were that bad. Any particular reason?

Not necessarily bad, just inferior to what you get elsewhere.

Generally, it's a matter of image quality output and output options, as well as performance issues (how well it can handle layer switches, multi-threaded presentations and other more advanced DVD features) and navigational options (IMO, the more you have the better- though nowadays even many set-top DVD players lack a good selection of navigational options).

Think of it like the PSP- multifunction machines can do several things, but it usually won't do each thing as well as a device dedicated to a single function.
