Um guys... the holy trinity won't quite be complete at launch

Super Mario Galaxy is not a launch title. first quarter 2007

    same as SSB Brawl.

[face_worried] Don't remind me please...it hurts me too deep.

I said was that they were three great reason to get a Wii (Mario, Zelda, and Metroid)...I never mentioned they were launch titles did I?

But oh how I do wish they were launch titles.

If you are gamer...casual, hardcore anything in between I just can't believe the above statements, I'm sorry.

    *shrug* Believe it.
I never got into the Metal Gear series and I barely touched a PS2 or X-Box.
Go up to a random non-gamer and ask about Snake then ask about Super Mario. That's all I was getting at.

Kinda like Tarkin with SW fans. If you're a fan, you ought to know who Tarkin is. If you're just a casal viewer who likes the movies but isn't into them, it's very possible to completely forget him.
I came up with the Tarkin Test pre-PT just for that reason actually :p

It's just very hard to swallow. But nowadays I assume kids can recognized Snake just as much as they can for Mario.

But your right if you go up to a random mom and ask who either is she is more likely to recognize mario.

I assume your a Nintendo guy through and though??? That's cool..but please pick up any copy or game of Metal Gear that you can. You will not be dissapointed. I even have MGS2 PVC collectible figures in my book case. Not only do I play the games but I buy the merch as well...man do I love MGS.

So when I heard Snake was goin be in SSBB...I about flipped!

There is no way Snake is as well-known as Mario, even in the gaming community. Snake may be very well-known, but Mario is just plain universal. :p

Here's what I'm arguing Snake is as well known in the gaming community as Mario. It just seems MGS games are becomign more popular even with kids, while even kids nowadays shun Mario as being too kiddy. I'm not saying it's right. I'm just saying what I think of the situation.

But outside the gaming community no one would know who Snake is...besides guessing an animal.

I got MGS: Twin Snakes for Gamecube, and have played all three Solid games. The original MSX games I have missed on, and I tried the first game of Acid... that was weird, not Metal Gear at all.

Oh and Metroid Prime 3 and Zelda: TP are launch titles... just no Mario, which actually scares me. Gamecube had a paltry launch because it had no Mario, despite how great Luigi's Mansion was, and Sunshine was too little, too late. NES, SNES< and N64 all had groundbreaking Mario games to drive the launch. Hopefully Galaxy comes very soon to launch. Then again, this is the first Zelda launch title, and Link is about as big as Mario.

I don't think the Wii needs a Mario game at launch actually, since it's not going to be overshadowed by another system like the Gamecube was and it has the Zelda game instead (though the GC version may put a dampener on that). Plus Sony seem intent on hammering themselves into the ground (though I question how many casual gamers actually know about any of the stuff people have complained about- they know it's going to be expensive, but I've seen 3 preorders go in for them here while I've been browsing in EB regardless).

I'm a Sony fanboy and I've never played a MGS game all the way through [face_worried]

Well I'd definately fallen out of the gaming scene for this generation of systems. Money problems etc.
I'm hoping to re-enter it again though :)

i hated MGS on the PS1 and have never played a single version since. Mario to me is the bigger brand. Im going to buy a Wii and i hope its a return to form for Nintendo. Not going to bother with the PS3 unless in a couple of years it has price dropped massively and has some more games that i must have.

Still love my 360 its a very good machine

This seems to be jumping the gun a bit (since few have played Wii games), and making assumptions about what gamers consider fun. Some like sports games in which you barely control the players on the field, others like repetitive 2-3 moves hack-n-slashes, and more still prefer to shoot their way through derivative Half Life or HALO clones or fight against

There's a great diversity of games and genres, and no system as of yet has been able to do it all with great success. There will always be a need to multi-platform for the gamer, and it makes no sense to say that there's only one system on which one can find great gameplay.

Heh. At my city's fireworks show last night, they played theme music from Metal Gear Solid 3. I thought it worked well...

   ...[face_not_talking]...[face_shame_on_you]

The words hate and MGS do not belong together..ever! And I thought it was essential for all Sony fans to love MGS. Ok MGS...IMHO is one of the greatest series to ever grance a video game console, period.

Wii does not need Mario at launch Zelda and Metroid are sure to deliver...I'm sure that SMG and SSBB will be along soon enough after launch...so by the time we are done with Zelda and Metroid..we have two more great games being released.

_I also think it's a little too soon to be judging each console...How do we know Wii has the best gameplay just because they came out with a new controller....and how do we not know Wii's and PS3's online service won't be as good as 360's? And I think as far as backwards compatiability goes PS3 has two previous systems whose game it can play...so well.

Anyway until all are released and have been out a few months it's way to soon to be judging them and how they rack up against each other. We still have half a year before they are all out on the market.

Hey cut him some slack. I'm a hardcore Nintendo fan, but I have and still hate Mario 64.

But I think that is the hardest part of this whole next gen. MGS4 and Gears of War. I have absolutely no plans to buy a PS3 (at least until some MAJOR price drops) but Metal Gear just might be my favorite series on any console ever. And after getting my latest Game Informer and looking through the E3 roundup, I got really excited about a number of Xbox 360 games... but chances are 95% of those will be out for PC, so what's the point, right? It pains me... but Zelda will hold me over. :)

But I did like Mario Sunshine! Do I get extra credit points? It's just that at the time I wasn't really into 3-D platformers, so I didn't like it back then. Now I think the game is too clunky and not as smooth feeling as Mario Sunshine or the Jak and Daxter games. So it boils down to A.) I used to not like 3-D platformers and B.) The game did not age well. But I should at least try it for DS, I mean after what THAT did for Mario Kart, I bet Mario 64 feels a lot more "complete" too.

Edit: On a thread related note: Viva La Wii

Actaully I prefer the 64 version of Mario 64 just because the DS doesn't have the analog stick and it's a bit harder to control.

    Anyway:

How many people for sure are picking up a Wii???

I am, I already have a Wii game reserved (Zelda) and am on the "reserved" reserve list. And I am so pumped.

Anyone have a real release date yet?

Joystiq is reporting that Sports Illustrated for Kids stated that the release date for the Wii is November 6th.

Don't go all happy about that though, Nintendo hasn't officially confirmed or denied the date yet.

I'm really excitied about the Wii...I hope it will be a major success. Nintendo is taking a gamble but if it pays off it pays off big.

I would just like to use the controller before I buy one.

Mario 64 was definitely better on the N64 than the DS, in my limited experience playing the DS version.

In some ways, M64 is superior to SMS, but Sunshine is still highly underrated, IMO. Once you acquire the new abilities via the waterpack and get into some of the tougher stages, SMS provides one of the best 3D platformer challenges around. Some of those abilities, particularly the hovering capability, also address some of the shortcomings of 3D platformers vs 2D ones when in comes to "depth perception" of jumps and the like. Sunshine's only major flaw was it's camera system (which seems to have been a bigger pain for other people than it was for me, though even I found it troublesome in some spots).

both probably.. it's been proven time and again - neo geo, betamax. but you're right - we can't know until it happens.

if it takes off, that's great, and i'll be first in line to admit i was wrong. but looking at the past, i don't see how it can stand a chance.
