Even more to the point, lest we should forget, Solo movie Maul WOULD NOT EXIST had it not been for animated Maul. I guess that's the double-edged sword for the Maul fans out there who took up issue with the portrayal in TCW. If it wasn't for Lucas' motivation to bring Maul back from the dead in the first place, we wouldn't be talking about the character the way we are now; especially in a post-PT thread.
Yeah, we could be talking about a different cool character instead, one that didn't die and get brought back by plot magic.
Speaking only for myself, I'm not hating on Maul. But at least IMO it's unfair to rant on his portrayal in the animated series if you liked his character enough to crave more of him.
Of course we may never get all the details, but I can't help but think Maul was re-introduced at the end of SOLO in order to then bring him and Crimson Dawn (and maybe even Qui'ra) into the Kenobi movie in some way. And part of the climax of the Kenobi film would have been Obi-Wan vs. Maul. Still could happen if the Kenobi movie is ever greenlit, maybe 5 years from now, or even longer.
It's a long story, but during the Clone Wars, Maul had his moment when he was a threat. After his big show down with the Sith ends in defeat Maul is able to escape with his life, but suffers irreparable damages to his power base. Dooku asks when they will go after him. Darth Sidious says Maul's future is erased and he will no longer be a threat they need concern themselves with. I don't know if Maul knows it or not, but Darth Sidious is not actively looking for him or even worried about him. Being able to see the future allows Darth Sidious to be confident with these things.
You can't trust visions of the future after that stunt Maul pulled with the Holocrons. That's probably why the Chosen One prophecy was so egregiously misinterpreted by the Jedi in the first place! Maul screwed up big time with that one!
I'm just telling you what Sidious said. And Sidious was confident that Maul was no longer a threat that needed to be worried about.
The jedi hadn't misinterpreted the Chosen One prophecy. Anakin destroyed the Sith, bringing balance to the Force.
I think you might be missing the broader point about arrogance and certainty about the future. Sidious is a personification of that, in part. So you’re not supposed to take what he says as indicative of a hard reality...
Sidious seemed pretty good about calling it before it happened right up to Return of the Jedi. Yes, his arrogance got him in the end, but he had a long successful run that cause a lot of trouble for the entire galaxy before it caught up to him after two generations passed.
If not, a greenlit for an FoD-Miniclip-sequel has to do it, for Disney, by SOLO bombing the box office, is robbed all of her money now.
I love me some good old Darth Maul, but for me, the cameo felt tacked on. The whole igniting the lightsaber thing also felt off. I don't know, it was probably my least favorite part of the film, or one of them. I do think it seems like they were trying to set something up, a future film perhaps? Who knows. It is now probably something we will never see.
I really hope we will. A SOLO-sequel is the last opportunity to get Maul on screen with a naturally aged Ray Park. As well a Palpatine played by a naturally aged Ian McDiarmid, sealing another doom on his former apprentice. Disney would be really dumb to waste such a chance to make amendments for SOLO's bad box-office performance which was not the fault of the film's directors.
Lol at a “naturally aged Ray Park.” Sounds like you’re discussing a rare, fine cheese, and not a stunt performer who can be easily recast.
You call that easy? After Alden Ehrenreich gained that criticism about merely posing than acting, because some fans couldn't set aside their prejudices whatsoever? Why taking such a risk again, when the original and highly credible actor is still alive and has the right age even? BTW: I like cheese.
Ha. First of all, Star Wars fans were dead wrong about Alden as Han. Just as Batman fans were dead wrong about Ledger as the Joker. Just as fans are dead wrong about nearly all casting decisions. Secondly, and this is the easier point: there really is no equivalence between Ford and Park, and their respective roles. One is an accomplished actor who played a beloved major character across four films, and the other is a stunt performer who played a minor villain in one of the prequel movies. Heck, many fans have even come to think of Witwer as their Maul, even moreso than Park or Serafinowicz. So comparatively, this recast would be a piece of cake if Park was no longer up for it. If Park is still around and the right age, though? Of course they should stick with him. If not, easy peasy. Lots of great actors out there.
I vote for Whoopie Goldberg as Maul! That would be something! Black, female and even older than the original actor - playing a white male bad guy. Some people would riot!
