I don't know why they need to be CGI

The more fundamental question is why does this need to exist in the first place.

In any case, the idea that the actress who plays Snow White isn’t attractive enough compared to the Queen really is a silly criticism. This film will fall down for many other reasons besides.

If I remember correctly, Peter Dinklage went on and gave a passionate argument on how disappointed he was that Disney was going to profit off of outdated otherness status of dwarfs / little people.

There were signs and photos that Disney then filmed the 7 as being a motley crew of social outcasts and misfits. Those alleged leaks got a terrible backlash.

My guess is this seems to be the compromise - clearly not-human dwarves of a magical forest. And the CGI to underline the not-human-ness and not wanting any controversy of being disrespectful.
I also know everyone will criticize the CGI, but people have been talking about overblown CGI budgets for realism when it’s not needed, like the Lion King remake, and went for something more stylistic and cartoony.

Will I go back on this defense? Maybe. And Rachel Ziegler’s Snow White comment was the bigger concern for me. But I’m glad they’re trying to balance doing something new while still treasuring the nostalgia of the old.

I honestly didn't think what Snow White and the Huntsman did with their dwarf characters was so bad. At least they weren't meant to be cartoonish like the upcoming movie.

i'm talking about the trailer for the movie coming out next year, not 12 years ago.

this live action remake looks uniquely terrible because CGI dwarves are a terrible creative decision, Gal Godot is not convincing as the Queen, Rachel Ziegler (who was fantastic in West Side Story) doesn't look convincing as Snow White, the old crone lady isn't scary, and the enhancements to the plot don't look interesting. hopefully this is the last one we'll have to endure.

Well...there's a live action remake of Lilo and Stitch coming out in May.

And Dreamworks is getting into the craze with a live action remake of How To Train Your Dragon.

Dreamworks should do a live action Prince of Egypt starring a CGI-reanimated Charleston Heston. If it's selling well they could even do a tie-in novelization.

I think they're going outsized CGI dwarf creatures to explicitly state they are not supposed to real people in any way. I still wonder about those leaked photos of them as random people though. Maybe it's a huge ending spoiler where they become human? Or the CGI is so obvious because they're doing a reshoot version of pasting CGI Dwarfs on top of what they shot

Even to that cowardly point… parents can decide by waiting for them to watch it later.

Reposting some of my mini-review from the other thread:

Mufasa: The Lion King (2024): Wow, this was actually very good. I wasn't sour on it coming into the film like some people were (I thought the trailers were fine), but it exceeded my expectations. I actually wish they had left out the "sequel-set" framestory (which is ultimately just an excuse to include Timone and Pumba in the film, and maybe set up an actual 3rd film/sequel) and left this as a straight prequel, because I really enjoyed having an original story being told in this format rather than an adaptation of an animated work.

It was just neat to get a story showing the world at work without the whole Hamlet usurper angle chaos of the original film. And the character arcs are actually very believable. The songs are pretty good too. Not instant classics as the original film's, of course, but a few were fairly memorable (Taka's song in particular conveys a really good character transition).

I'd love to see a re-edit of these films that either pares-down the framestory to make this a "watch first" prequel (even if you have to keep some of the framestory for the narration, etc- just cut out the Scar joke and other "spoilers" for TLK), or combines both films into a 4-hour cut, because i really like what this adds to how TLK plays out.

Mufasa's biological parents were voiced by Dr. Facilier (Keith David) and Tiana (Anika Noni Rose) from Princess and the Frog.

I find this claim really odd.
Disney has gone out of its way to be super progressive and modern with its storytelling these days in its movies & TV shows, to the extent it constantly gets labelled as "woke" by the online hate grifters. Now suddenly they don't want to do that anymore? I find that hard to believe given the time and investment they've put into supporting it in the last decade.

And got criticised by the rest of the dwarf actor community for it, rightly so because he looked foolish and now those actors who could potentially have been in this movie don't have work.

Given this comment from the creator of Gravity Falls, I find their current back sliding extremely believable:

And that's not to mention they already catered to bigots last November: https://www.avclub.com/disney-scrubbed-trans-rights-episode-of-moon-girl-and-devil-dinosaur

All of the trailers from the last few pages look dreadful. Not a single one looks even mildly interesting. And those CGI dwarfs do look bad. Like, turn and look away bad.

They put a gay couple in Eternals & Lightyear, as well as hints to LGBT characters & pronouns in numerous projects. They obviously didn't care about overseas reception to those things when they did them, so why do they care now?

They care now because Trump winning the election is seen as a potential sea change, and they want to hedge their bets in case it’s signalling a general regression in the culture.

Not just Trump. Remember DeSantis and his actions against Disney.

Yeah, but someone like DeSantis could be seen as a quirk of Florida at the time.

The fact that Trump won fairly resoundingly tells Disney that the reaction isn’t just a fever of the moment, and is probably a broad trend in the American population who they would like to keep / bring back as customers.

Oh wow a ten second shot of two side characters holding hands, that’s sooooo progressive of them.

Edit: Oh and look, another report about Disney execs pandering to bigots, it’s almost like this might be a pattern: https://www.indiewire.com/news/gene...iley-inside-out-2-less-gay-report-1235049147/
