The game's been out for three years, so yes, lots of people have reached level 20, even level 50.

I think I'm a level 25 or something. I haven't played in a little while so I'm not really sure.

Some not-so-terrific release date revision news...and some very intriguing news, both from Bethesda:

No New Elder Scrolls Anytime Soon
But you will get two books to tide you over.

by Erik Brudvig

April 27, 2009 - At a recent press event, Bethesda's VP of Marketing and Public Relations Pete Hines told attendees not to hold their breath in regards to a new game in the Elder Scrolls franchise. The team led by Todd Howard that is responsible for the Elder Scrolls games -- including Morrowind and Oblivion -? as well as Fallout 3 will remain quiet for now. As Hines plainly stated, "The next big project announcement is not coming anytime soon."

Those hoping to revisit Tamriel in the interim can look forward to two books currently in the works, to be published by Del Rey books. The first, penned by Greg Keyes, is titled "The Infernal City," and picks up the story at the end of the events from The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. It is due out this fall.
[/blockquote]
Keyes, eh? [face_thinking] There's been some rampant speculation lately that a licensed novel series was in the offing...looks like this one was actually correct. And you could do with a far worse author than Keyes; I keep hoping JMS will just turn him loose on an official Babylon 5 "Telepath War" series, but this'll certainly do in the meantime.

So...was that 2010 date the Bethesda folks recently gave nothing but a whole lot of hot air? That said, it seemed a mite fishy to me either way you sliced it, when you looked at how soon ES5 would've been coming on the heels of Fallout 3, considering that the same primary design team is doing both games, and the minimum several years of development time each game's required.

Believe me, I'm more than happy to be getting a couple of Keyes books to tide me over until the next big game drops; the more time they take on properly developing Elder Scrolls V, the better. This is not at all bad news.

I hope the novels' grammatical style is as good as that. ^ :p

I've never really been into game novels, I'd much rather have the game. :(

Keyes! Hell yeah, I have been waiting since Morrowind for some of these novels to come out. GK is a great author, love everyone of his books that I have read except The Born Queen which I thought was a waste of trees.

Also: "Withershins."

Hell, why not just release The Collected Canon of Crassius Curio? You'd automatically sell MILLIONS.

it involves mods and playing it on the PC. not terribly difficult really. elys uncapper is needed, along with something called oblivion script enhancer. there are many things that make the game VASTLY more challenging in the modding community, and make this the game it always should have been. foremost among those are oscuro's oblvion overhaul, the number one downloaded mod for oblivion. another HIGHLY interesting one is called FCOM, which combines four mods that were previously incompatable to make an even bigger experience with vastly more enemies and other things to deal with. total TYPEs of enemies is now 1300+. new weapons, quests and other things also add to the life of the game if you're interested.

lookup TESNexus or planet elderscrolls for the biggest databases of addons for oblivion. or morrowind for that matter.

Yeah after I got the handle of the game I got all those. The Overhaul is a must for the bug fixes. Then there's the ones that upgrade the graphics. I had a ton

I don't know how I even missed this, or why I never thought to go straight to the main Bethesda site for this, but they've already released some plot details for Greg Keyes's first upcoming Elder Scrolls novel, The Infernal City:

PRESS RELEASE

BETHESDA SOFTWORKS AND DEL REY BOOKS ANNOUNCE NOVELS BASED ON THE ELDER SCROLLS VIDEO GAME SERIES

Rockville, MD ? April 27, 2009 ? Bethesda Softworks®, a ZeniMax® Media company, and Del Rey, an imprint of Ballantine Books at the Random House Publishing Group, are pleased to announce that Del Rey Books will publish two novels based on Bethesda Softworks' award-winning, high-fantasy video game series, The Elder Scrolls®. The best-selling game series is known for giving the player the ability to choose how their story will play out and unfold, and for the incredible amount of lore and depth found in these rich game worlds.

Penned by New York Times bestselling author Greg Keyes, the novels will be all-new, original stories based in The Elder Scrolls universe. The first novel ? The Infernal City ? is set to be published in Fall 2009. Among Keyes' prior works are the Age of Unreason tetrology (for which he won the prestigious "Le Grand Prix de l'Imaginaire" award), and three New York Times-bestselling Star Wars novels in the New Jedi Order series.

"We've been big fans of Greg's work for a long time, and we're thrilled he agreed to bring his talents to The Elder Scrolls," said Pete Hines, vice president of public relations and marketing for Bethesda Softworks. "We see these books as a natural extension of the franchise, and think fans will love the stories and characters Greg has created."

The Infernal City is set after the events of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion®, the latest game in the video game series, and finds the citizens of Tamriel once again facing an uncertain future. Floating high above the land is a strange and mysterious city that is casting a horrifying shadow ? wherever it falls, people die and rise again as undead. It is up to an unlikely duo ? a seventeen-year-old girl named Annaig and the Emperor's young son, Prince Attrebus ? to rescue the kingdom from doom. Annaig and Attrebus' quest will take them through the Elder Scrolls universe and their adventure is sure to add to the series' already magnificent mythology.
[/blockquote]
Based on the events of the last game, I thought Martin was basically the last son of the Emperor? Unless this is MARTIN'S son we're talking about, here, perhaps one that he sired with some babymama somewhere before joining Weynon Priory? Is this a retcon, or is it something else entirely? We know that the Emperor's two known "legit" sons were killed by the Dagon-worshippers, so we'll see.

And Keyes obviously won't be locking in any concrete details about Oblivion's main protagonist or the Nerevarine (à la Revan from KotOR), but he'll undoubtedly be using the generic events from both games in a non-binding way, just like Karpyshyn's Mass Effect novels. Either way, Keyes's involvement is extremely awesome any way you slice it, and these could potentially be set-up novels in the same vein as the Mass Effect books, building momentum for Scrolls V.

This gives me hope for an epic book based on the life of St. Jiub.

Just another thought I had, re: the novels --

What if Prince Attrebus, "the Emperor's Son," happens to be the son of whomever Chancellor Ocato and the Elder Council eventually picked as Uriel's and Martin's successor? The game leaves it real vague at the very end whom they might be leaning towards after Martin's death, and they sure didn't seem to be any hurry about it. The fact that some time has passed since the ending could mean that they finally settled on somebody appropriate -- the game mentions that there would be a lot of disagreement about whomever they ultimately went with, no matter who it was.

By "Jedi," do you mean a class with high spellcasting ability, swordsman skills, etc? Apart from the array of pre-made classes you can pick from (like Spellswords or Battlemages), you can also do some cool custom-building:

Personally, I'd go with either a Breton or a High Elf for race, especially since Bretons get something like +50 Magicka, plus a super-high Magicka resistance, while High Elves automatically receive +100 Magicka, though you're gonna be slightly weaker to magic attacks. As for Birthsign, going with "The Atronach" gives you +150 Magicka, but you can no longer naturally regenerate Magicka (and must rely on either potions, or the very-iffy 50% Spell Absorption ability that you get with it). Wood Elves have the highest Agility ratings in the game, for what it's worth.

Pick Magic, Strength, and Intelligence as your primary attributes (or else Willpower in place of Intelligence), and go with four or five of the mage-based skills (Alchemy, Alteration, Conjuration, Destruction, Illusion, Mysticism, and Restoration), along with Long Blades, and this actually leads to a pretty good character. Though I still recommend you maybe drop Illusion and throw in Light Armor for that added protection without the massive weight of lugging around a full suit of Heavy Armor. Keep Destruction and Restoration as your two major techniques, and you're golden.

Unless you wanted to throw some Jedi-like acrobat/agility skills into the mix, in which case I'd recommend Acrobatics and/or Athletics, though these tend to increase quite rapidly early on. With Alteration's lock-picking spells, you won't really need to level up your Security abilities, which is an added bonus.

Seven major skills:

Blade
Block (handy for blocking with two-handed swords)
Mysticism (life sensing and telekinesis powers)
Illusion (mind control)
Sneak
Restoration (healing yourself and others)
Acrobatics (jump higher, fall further)

Should be a good start.

More DLC on the way for Oblivion?

Very, very possible.

At the moment, rumor has it that the next expansion will be similar in scope to Knights of the Nine and The Shivering Isles, as opposed to a "Fighter's Stronghold"-type environmental download. Bring that ****, I say. Depending upon the nature of it, it looks like my earlier characters are gonna be coming out of retirement -- my Divine Crusader's been sitting up there in Battlehorn Castle ruling over NW Cyrodiil for quite some time now. He's getting ennui. He wants to kill stuff.

(And I'm surely not the only one to find the news that Bethesda are "[still] selling Morrowind on a monthly basis" to be simply...awesome.)

Hey! I've had the GOTY Edition for ps3 since early last year and it's probably the game i've put the most hours into. I still have not gotten even half way through the MQ but have finished all factions minus DB. Hey what are you going to do when a random man dressed in a grim reaper suit comes up to you and asks if you wanna join a bunch of assains? Huh? Anyways just recently stumbled into the cave with the UMBRA sword. Haha I rampaged the southern countryside with the thing and trapped many, many souls to ;). I Currently have Ebony armour aswell courteousy of the lovely miss UMBRA sword lady. Unfortuantely my horse has randomly dissapeared never to be found again or perhaps just laying by an inn I happen to go to alot. Anyways needless to say I LOVE this game.

The first Elder Scrolls novel, The Infernal City (written by Greg Keyes) is now available for pre-order from Del Rey.

The preliminary cover artwork:

[image=http://static.bethsoft.com/blog/Infernal%20Citynew2.jpg]

Very Roger Dean-ish.

It looks like a Dwemer city. At first I saw the stringy, mushroom-looking things, and thought "Telvanni," but it looks way more Dwarven than Telvanni. So we might be getting some serious Morrowind/Vvardenfell connections, here.

The new back-cover blurb:

Four decades after the Oblivion Crisis, Tamriel is threatened anew by an ancient and all-consuming evil. It is Umbriel, a floating city that casts a terrifying shadow?for wherever it falls, people die and rise again.

And it is in Umbriel's shadow that a great adventure begins, and a group of unlikely heroes meet. A legendary prince with a secret. A spy on the trail of a vast conspiracy. A mage obsessed with his desire for revenge. And Annaig, a young girl in whose hands the fate of Tamriel may rest....

Based on the award-winning The Elder Scrolls, The Infernal City is the first of two exhilarating novels following events that continue the story from The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, named 2006 Game of the Year.
[/blockquote]
Four decades after Oblivion? Very interesting. The last reports had this novel being set just a couple years afterward, but this makes one wonder exactly how far into the future TES5 is going to be set.

I seriously like the fact that they're going with "An Elder Scrolls Novel" on the front cover, rather than "An Oblivion Novel," as the latter would probably be the more eye-catching logo for attracting the hardcore gamer. The fact that they're encompassing the wider Elder Scrolls series -- and not simply one single title -- is great, and bodes well for whatever continuity-textures the novel contains.

Plus, it's Keyes. And I'll read anything he puts out.
