Then the screen said "Sorry, no matches were found." What?! No Far Side thread? You gotta be kiddin me.

Alrighty then, here it is: an (un)official The Far Side discussion thread.

Gary Larson's single panel creations are among the funniest things ever created. This is the place to discuss The Far Side.

    ENJOY!

Between the books and calendar pages, I probably have every Far Side Larsen ever drew.

    Some of the best:

    "...Agnes simply ate the flowers."
    The fake McCoys
    "...we're not exactly rocket scientists."
"...I've got good gnus and bad gnus."
    Midvale school for the gifted.
Rusty goes to the vet's to get "tutored".

Cool. I envy your collection General Kenobi. I need to catch up on my Far Side collecting, although I have most of the books.

Larson has inspired a slew of imitators. This is actually a good thing, I think. Open any newspaper, or even better, any college newspaper, and you are almost guaranteed to find a comic panel that is blatantly in the same style as tFS. They're ripping him off!!!!!!! [face_mischief] But seriously, he has inspired a lot of young comics. The mighty Bill Watterson (Calvin and Hobbes author/artist) has spoken the accolades of The Far Side.

The Far Side is great fun imo. Sometimes I'll just sit there staring and laughing at a Far Side panel. Often, I'll bust out giggling at a panel I didn't laugh at or 'get' before.

Anyway, I have to shamefully admit I gleefully enjoy when one of his single panels offend some righteous organization or political group, or heck just offends some people period. I dunno why, but it does. *laughs under breath* ;)

Not my favorite favorite comic, but close to it.

Does he still write them? We never had them in the newspapers here, as far as I know.

There was a Far Side animated special that ran only once about ten years ago around Halloween.

I would love to get a copy of this, if anybody knows...

For some reason, I like his cartoons when they involve cows.

*Cows driving past some people in a paddock yelling "Yackidy-yackidy-yack!" to them.

*Cows attempting to build a rocket, while a farmer laughs at them saying "Where do you think you're going to? The mooooooon?"

*Cows partying inside the house of a farmer and him saying to his wife "I told you not to invite the cows"

Cows + Gary Larson = Funny.

if you like The Far Side you would probably like Bizarro by Dan Pirarro (sp?) too.

Yeah, I've read it before. My aunt lives in East Tennessee, and I've read it there before when I go on vacation to her house. It's really funny too.

My favorite Far Side (that I remember) is the one that's "How birds see the world" with the bullseyes on the car, the guy's head, the newspaper, etc.

Bizarro isn't nearly so creative or funny as The Far Side was, at least not consistently. It has it's good days, but the bad days outweigh the good.

The Far Side on the other hand remains one of the greatest comic strips of all time, right next to Peanuts and Calvin and Hobbes. It's quite simply brilliantly perverse.

I have all of the books. My favorite is the one with the scientist on a ship and he drops a microphone into the water and a whale is singing "Louie, Louie" into it.

    "Does he still write them?"

Nope, he stopped on January 1, 1995, to my knowledge.

One of my favorite ones is the one where the guy walks out of the bathroom and a big flashing sign that says "Did no wash hands" starts going off.

ah , i love the far side

    two of my favs are

the one with a duck with no feathers sitting forlornly in the woods with a policeman and a bloodhond standing next to him with the policeman saying "no, no the scent on the pillow , on the pillow!"

and the one with two detectives standing in a room with one of them saying "curiosity killed these cats" and the room is full of dead cats, chemistry equipment and mathimatical equations on blackboards

I liked the one where this dog is leading a cat to the dryer with arrows and signs saying "Cat Fud" and he's thinking "Oh please,oh,please!". Whenever I feed my cats,I sometimes like to say "You want some cat fud?",and all becuase of Gary Larson.
There's also the one of an executive who's really a suit full of ducks. That's always funny.

Far Side is my favorite comic strip ever, tied only with Trudeau's Doonesbury. Larson is truly a genius of comics. And, even though new cartoonists try to copy his style, no one will ever live up to the comical genius which is Gary Larsen.

I like the duck/geese ones. One of my favorites is the one where the ducks are all walking in a V shape on the ground and the leader looks up into the sky, see's another flock flying in formation and says, "Say...look what they're doing."

    My favorites are:

Where the farmer is giving the sheep his famous "airplane rides".

Where there's a lady on the back porch giving her dog a bone, and an old man is rolling down the hill

Where there are the 3 lines in the air and the explorer points out to his assistant that that's the international cartoon symbol for glass and they're trapped.

What I love about the Far Side is that it's obvious that the creator (for some reason I can't think of name right now!) is obviously a scientist, so you get alot of intelligent humor, but it's twisted in such a way that just makes it hilarious.

I love the Far Side cartoons - they often are drawn in the same way I think ! :D

I'm always saddened that Symantec bought up Delrina and shup down all their screensavers - I've never seen the Far Side Screensaver here in germany ...

The Far Side was, without a doubt the funniest newspaper comic I have ever read. Larson was just so far out there! I don't have any of the books any more, which is a shame, but I do remember what my favorite one was. A nerdy-looking kid pushing on a door that says pull, and up above it is a sign that says "Midvale School for the Gifted." Hell, I'm laughing even just typing that out! Heh heh heh. It would be great if he would come back to it again someday.

The unfourtunate desert traveller who finds the plane crash sweatpants

    "I think that's the chief"
    "See you later guys!"
Going to sleep with the humans

    There's so many great ones!
