If you're talking about film, then Star Wars. Hands down, period.

For me, it's probably a tie between the Aliens/AvP saga, and the Terminator saga. Mainly because there's so much to the EU of each franchise that literally NO ONE knows about. It's fun to tell people that there's some 50+ Terminator comics and 9 novels, and see the look on their face. ;)

    Top Five Sagas

    1. Star Wars.
    2. Indiana Jones.
    3. Matrix/Lord of the Rings.
    4. Terminator/James Bond
    5. Die Hard/Back to the future.

The same goes for Indiana Jones? They are both very good movies, but to me they don't really qualify as sagas.

They are sagas because they follow a timeline, i think.

Indiana Jones isn't the same as Star Wars, or LOTR, in the sense that each movie stands on it's own - The story just happens to have the same characters. Like the Simpsons. Each episode is independant. SW, LOTR, on the other hand, both tell one big story.

Dune Saga, I'd say. And I've only read the first one, but I have great respect for Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire.

(although T3 is going to ruin it)

    i wouldnt speak TOO soon.

Despite the overwelming hatred i have for PJ for changing so much stuff that he didnt need to in TTT, as movies the TTT and FOTR are both amazing and if ROTK is as good as i hear then LOTR would be right under SW.

But nothing can really touch starwars. And I bet Ep3 will be best of the PT, hard to beat AOTC but we'll see.

i'm not so sure movie series such as die hard and bond count as sagas. i guess it all depends on your own definition of what a saga is. to me, a saga is a story that is told over the course of multiple chapters - something where the story relies on all three, all four, all six of it's installments. if to you a saga is simply a string of movies, i'd have to say that friday the 13th is the greatest saga of all time. how many of those movies are there? amazing.

seriously though, my top three sagas would have to be star wars, lotr, and matrix. of course it remains to be seen what will become of matrix, but i have to give credit where it is deserved. from a visual standpoint, lucas has the upper hand without question. the things he's been able to put on screen over the past few decades is simply incredible. from a more in-depth standpoint, tolkien is simply a genius. for someone to create an entire world, full of different races, customs, languages, etc. boggles my mind. both of these sagas will stand the test of time.

I'm changing the premise of this thread a little bit. It's going to be very much like the thread in the TPM forum. Which Great Movie Saga will stand the test of time?

STAR WARS, LOTR, The Matrix, Harry Potter...etc.

I hope they make some more great sagas, the Matrix trilogy and LotR trilogy are great sagas despite the division its created among fans, seems like if you like SW you hate LotR or the Matrix and the opposite as well, I like them all, im sure RotK and Revolutions will rock.

I think SW will always stand the test of time as the greatest saga, the OT has already endured for many years. Probably LotR second because it's already endured as a great peice of Fiction.

You're joking of course, quite a bit compares. If Dune were ever given the same treatment that Jackson was giving to LOTR Dune would quite possible have the greatest scope of all the ones out there. Not that I didn't like the SF Network's version, it just took some getting used to. I also won't comment on saga's that aren't yet finished, since the way something ends can negate everything that has gone before. (Consider the fan reaction the Aliens III, even though that wasn't even the end.) The only exception would be LoTR since we know how that ends, only Jackson's execution is the wild card there, and I see no reason to doubt he will maintain the same level of quality that he brought to the first two films. Harry Potter is still an unfinished saga even in book form, not to mention there will undoubtably be director changes, and recastings before the end. I think the OT will stand the test of time, but to a lot of people coming along in the subsequent generations after it looks a bit dated, and I know quite a few younger people who can't really get into it.
I also wouldn't put Jurassic Park in the list, because they don't appear to have had any overall design.

I'm glad that someone out there respects anime, because if you were in fact to include say a Gundam, or and Evangelion, with their scope, no live action movie would stand a chance.

And how could nobody, but nobody even mention George Romero's Night of the Living Dead trilogy? I wouldn't say that they were the greatest, but they'd definately make my top ten list. Same for the Mad Max series which if you watch it is very well thought out.

Definitely LOTR. There is blumin thousands of years of complete history. Then SW cos it has created a new Universe, and then probably The Matrix. If we're talking about "Of all time" then surely some ancient Greek sagas must be in there such as The Odessy.

Heck I wouldn't give anything the title of greatest of all time just because it's new. In fact it's not really new at all, it's an amalgam of a lot of other stuff. By that definition. Babalyon 5 and Galactica are great saga's, or the time line from Star Trek which precedes the SW universe by almost a decade. No, SW is shaping up to be a pretty good saga with one pivotal chapter to go, I can't wait. My fingers are starting to hurt from being crossed for so long.

The ones that will last the longest? Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, and The Godfather. Those 4 will out last all sagas, IMO. The thing about these 4, is that they all were their own big thing, they were the originals, they sparked parodies and spin-offs, influenced films like The Matrix and such.

    All you need is love!

Honestly, when you ask the question what saga will stand the test of time, it really is an interesting question when you look back through history recalling what was popular, and what we now still remember. Consider Shakespeare, or even Mozart. They weren't even considered to be the best of their day. What movie won the Oscar the year the King Kong came out?

We really do live in a more disposable society than any that has gone before; couple that with the fact that we for a large part have no respect for those that paved the way, the pioneers, or what might be considered low tech, that trying to determine the top anything becomes. . . well just look at all the posts on this thread, or that 10 greatest films of all time thread.

Star Wars will stand the test of time, but not because of the saga as a whole, but for the original film, and the incredible influence it had on film for decades afterward. It can honestly be said that no other film has had such a great impact on genres, the themes of movies and the target audience of film. It was in fact the end of what was considered the "A" film. The original Godfather (which is not much older than Star Wars but looks amazingly less dated) ain't going no where. It produced an equally gripping sequel, and though I could have done without #III it did in fact wrap it all up. The Matrix, the original probably will last the test of time, it also had a profound effect on a host of films that came out afterward. Star Trek won't go anywhere, but in most ppl's mind only the TV series, and the Wrath of Khan ever readily come to mind. As long as we continue to celebrate Halloween "Night of the Living Dead" will be there. Also it has the historical first of being the first sF/horror film to portray an African-American as the protagonist. It was also the film that opened the horror genre up to independents, and speaking of saga's that will last, I'm gonna' climb out on a limb and predict that Sam Raimi's "Evil Dead" saga will be around long after some others have fallen by the wayside.

Out of books, I would have to go with Dune, Harry Potter, and Lord of the Rings.Out of movies, I would say Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and the Godfather.

LOTR saga, simply because of its legacy.
    The Classic SW Trilogy are on teh same level as LOTR, but the prequel saga's I have already given up on as pure crap. Indiana Jones is up there, I still like the Star Trek series movies;

But ultimately, I think it is between the Lord of the Rings and teh GodFather saga, and ultimately, the GodFather has to win out.
