Gladiator was okay. It could've been a lot better though, and I really didn't get choked up at the end. That speech at the end seemed... forced. [face_plain]

Only 3 movies have ever made me cry (to my recolection), and they've all been because of the endings: E.T., Titanic, and Selena (I'm kinda surprised no one mentioned this one!)

Oh yeah, and now that someone mentioned it, the Land Before Time Movies (well, the earlier ones) always tug at the heartstrings!

Lolita. When Humbert gets that letter and sees Lolita for the first time in 3 years, and she's so different from how he remembers her, and she's pregnant and looks different, but he still loves her. And he asks her to come with him again, but she can't, and she says to the dog "say goodbye Molly, say goodbye ot my dad".
I'm not really good at describing it, but boht Nabokov wiht the novel, and Adrian Lyne with the film did such a good job. You really should see it if you get the chance.

Th only movie that made me a little emotional at the end was AI. But I see you guys saying that you cried at the end of ET, Braveheart, Titanic and what-not.

    I mean... c'mon! :p

I remember that I cried at the end of ET, but I was 4 when I saw it.
Movies still have the ability to choke me up a little bit, I got a little teary-eyed at the end of Gladiator and Saving Private Ryan, those are the only recent ones that come to mind.

Though this is not at the end of the movie in The Shawshank Redemption when Andy leaves, and Red is all alone. That is very sad to me.

This probably doesn't qualify as a 'goodbye' scene, but the scene in Dumbo with his mother in the cage obliterates me every time, without fail. I can't even thni about it.

Colonel_Reck you are absolutely right about that. "Glory" made me cry for hours at the end. You get so attached and really start to respect and love those men. Then they die. I tell you what makes the ending so emotional is the music. The Boys Choir of Harlem sing a powerful song at the end :_|

"Gettysburg" also has a tear-jerker of an ending. General Pickett's quote, "General Lee, I have no regiment" always gets a tear out of me :_|

My top 5 tear-jerker ending movies
    1. "Glory"
    2. "Gettysburg"
    3. "Pay it Forward" :_| (Haley Joel Osment does a world of good only to have it end abruptly) :_| :_|
    4. "City of Angels" (talk about your most f'ed up Catch-22's of all time!!!) :(
    5. "The Green Berets" (Thomas-san!!!!)

JFK - After everything that happened, it seems we all lose.

Blade Runner - The original cut for me worked best.

Play It By Heart - The whole Film seems sad.

Mr Smith Goes To Washington - James Stewart is G-d!

    Pay it Forward
    Gladiator
    ET
    Immortal Beloved
    AI

It seems music plays a large part in alot of scenes.
And sad, as some endings are, they are also quite happy. :)

Others that sort of fit in the category: (potential spoilers)

Streep staying on the car in The Bridges of Madison County.

The Schindler Jews giving him the ring, before he breaks down.

Billy leaves home/family while the film flashes forward in time in Billy Elliot.

Chow Yun Fat losing the only thing that can redeem him, and then misses the path of a final goodbye in The Killer.

    "Closer than that," Double Indemnity.

Sam Spade giving his love up because "When a man's partner is killed, he's supposed to do something about it" in The Maltese Falcon.

    Tony's last drive in Rififi.

And last, but certainly not least, Celia Johnson knowingly let her love go away in Brief Encounter.

That Schindlers scene used to have impact till I learned he melted the ring down to buy Schnapps. But then again, the more I learn about the real man the less I believe the film.
Goodbye scene? As a kid I hated when Clark left Martha Kent... :(

Oh, yeah, Double Indemnity always gets me too. Best line in the whole picture. "Closer than that, Walter."

Can't believe I forgot the Sixth Sense. The whole talking to her while she's asleep thing is gorgeous. What an ending!

Wow, I can't believe Empire Strikes Back hasn't been mentioned yet. The ending to A Perfect World is pretty gut wrenching, too.

from above posts : Glory, ET, Star Trek II, Ghost, Close Encounters are great ones.

I actually do cry at the end/goodbye scenes of Dead Poets Society and Saving Private Ryan also. I'm not sure if anyone has seen Spielberg's Always? The end of that tore me up.

ALWAYS is a very under-rated SPIELBERG film.
I had forgotten all about that one. It does have a great ending...and a very spiritual message...sometimes, it's time to let go.
