Who exactly was the Guardian of Mount Tantiss? Joruus C'Baoth says that he killed the Guardian, but that always seemed ridiculous to me.

Why would Palpatine clone C'Baoth and then let Joruus loose, thus putting his precious storehouse in jeopardy?

It seems much more logical to me that C'Baoth was the Guardian but over the years, succumbed to madness and forgot why he was there in the first place. The crypt where C'Baoth says the Guardian was entombed is probably empty.

But, Zahn seems to feel differently.

So, who was the real Guardian? Was it C'baoth or another Dark Jedi, who was killed by the insane Joruus who apparently appeared out of thin air?

The sourcebook confirms that Joruus was the original Guardian. He was just insane.

Alternatively, the entry on Mount Tantiss in The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia stated that the Guardian was a different guy.

Maybe there was a guardian, constructed within C'boath's mind. A separate personality, perhaps, or some part of himself that followed the Empire's orders. He said he fought a battle and defeated the guardian, and he did, but it all took place within his own mind. And when he killed the guardian, it destroyed that part of his mind and drove him pretty much insane, if he wasn't already.

I like to thik it was some bumbling droid that comically released C'Baoth from stasis.

I think it would be more aptly labeled if Joruus C'Baoth was the Guardian of Mount Tantrum.

Tim Zahn clearly intended the Guardian was a different individual. Here is what he said in Heir to the Empire: The 20th Anniversary Edition:
Authorial intent and the newer Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia indicate that the Guardian and C'baoth were separate entities. The sourcebook and Wayland's former Databank entry were clearly in error. Morerover, the inhabitants of Wayland did remember a battle between two powerful Force users. That settles it for me.

    How about this:

Palpatine has a clone of Jorus C'Baoth as a guardian for the Mount Tantiss storehouse. Because he is lonely / bored / for fun and giggles this clones creates another clone of the original Jorus C'Baoth (a clone of the clone should also increase the insanity-factor), who then kills the original clone-guardian after a while. Case close and Joruus C'Baoth has been the original guardian from the beginning.

So, does that make him the Guuardian?

No, since the original guardian has been killed. It just makes him Joruuus C'Baoth. ;)

Authorial intent is sometimes sacrosanct (see Viscount mess) and sometimes retconned right over- see K-Mac's Coruscant and K-Wings, or Abel's History of the Mandolorians

Yes, which is why I wouln't use authorial intent as the sole proof. Granted, The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia does contain mistakes, but it's also the "newer" source, and it's in perfect accordance with Zahn's original text.

GrandAdmiralJello once posted a joke about it too. It was something like "Darth Plagueis drank too much Muunshine".

In my personal cannon, the previous guardian is Dooku's head in a jar Futurama style.

The whole event is a little strange anyway, I mean Joruus must have killed the Guardian sometime after Endor, otherwise the Emperor would have sent someone to kill the insane Clone, so unless the original Guardian actually had the Clone grown on location for whatever reason one has to wonder how Joruus actually knew about the storehouse. It really makes more sense that Joruus really always was the Guardian or at least always at the storehouse.

can I still get a dark Obi Wan clone as guardian of mount tantiss? Lightsider Joruus vs. Dark Obi Wan...he won, but at the cost of his sanity since he had to kill Obi Wan which he only could by sacrificing his sanity... oh the irony!

PS: As for Joruus origin... I guess it is safe to assume Palpatine cloned him with the sample taken before Outbound Flight. So maybe the Guardian started his own little clone war agenda post-Endor and activated clone tanks with samples of Jorus, Luke's Hand, Mara Jade, Kam Solusar, etc. Jorus was first ready and out.. defeated the Guardian and stopped the other clones all but Luke cause he wanted an apprentice. (in retrospective kinda a TFU 2 dark side ending deal.. all the time he wants Luke as apprentice.. and already got Luuke anyway!) Later Thrawn takes the samples to his own cloning lab in the Unknown Regions and adds other samples he collects. But he got no Luke samples since that is the only thing Joruus used up.

That's awesome! Where did that image come from, and are there more concept designs like this?

PPS: now that begs the question: Why did Palpatine not simply inhabit the body of Luuke? Why did Cronal not know about that.. might have been handy for him in Shadows of Mindor and his plans. Also, why did Thrawn allow a Luuke clone to be around when he KNEW the Emperor tries to return.. would be too dangerous to leave potential bodies nearby.

Thrawn didn't know. C'Baoth created the clone without Thrawn's knowledge.
