Most notably the word Wha? (what)
    And innit (isn't it)

This irritates the hell out of me, along with pronouncing words wrongly or in an American way

Either speak proper English or don't speak English at all

Could you imagine Churchill talking Chav?

    Original
We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.

    Chav'd

We'll go on to da end, we shall knack em in France, we shall put the boot in on da seas n oceans, we'll slap em wi bigga conf'dence and betta hardness int air, we'll defend Britin, whatever it'll cost us, we'll kick em ont beaches, we'll do em in ont landin grounds, we'll fight ont grass(heh) and int streets, we'll fight int hills; we'll not give up, and if, which I do nawt believe, this land or a any bit of it were nicked or ungry, then our Empire away from us, armed and ready to kick wi the ships we av, would carry on scrappin, until we kick the ******* fo da lack o respec. Now who's wi me?

    It makes depressing reading

One that really annoys is when they want to loan a DVD and they ask

Can you borrow me your DVD

The whole lend/borrow distinction annoys me when people get it wrong. I don't know how people just can't hear that it's wrong.

Can you lend me your DVD?

Ohmilord, thats really gets on my nerves, my friends all do it and it gets rather annoying. Also, I cannot stand the "Fillem" replacement for "Film"... it's one syllable, not two! And what on Earth is happening to the word cupboard, it seems to have turned into "c'bert"

Oh, and don't even get me started on the whole "izzle" thing.

Plus, they have the nerve to make fun of the fact that I pronounce "Grass", "Glass" "Pass" etc correctly, if you know what I mean. It's not posh, it's simply correct!

To be correct does not mean you have to be posh...even though I'm probably both. :p

A 'posh accent' lengthens vowels etc, whereas correctly spoken English is merely speaking every sylabol etc.

...I've done Spoken English exams before for Drama stuff I've done, so thats where this is all coming from!

i agree with most of the points here, but stuff about joss stone singing! WTH?

for the ost part i find regional dialects distracting and annoying, mostly because i live in wolverhampton and it just seems more like lazyness rather than any kind of wonderously important regional identity. the way people speak in the black country is disgusting. it varies from far too quick to slow and dumbfounded while at the same time obviously taking lazy short cuts through words and sentences that really make sod all to the length of what they say, it's just-'easier' to say. old folk and kids around here sound awful, it seems people of my generation have by accident or design (my mom wasn't from here and 'disiplined me for saying 'nah' instead of no, and 'yow' instead of you or 'wick' instead of week etc and so on) began to speak properly-and no bad thing, i speak quite well, but when living up north i was imediately identified as as a midlander-which is fine by me-as they could understand what i was saying!

there are very few specific accents that are nice, just lots of different ones.

EDIT: you cannot use shortened versions like this

    Too true, Nath.

I live in Wednesbury, and I agree. I remember the night I moved to England, and my mothers sister and her family came around - I summed them up on the first night!

    Karen talks too quick.
    Gary talks too slow.
    Beverly talks too quietly.
    Joanne talks too loud.
..and Sarah just doesn't say anything at all!

8 years later, and nothing much has changed.

I'm so glad I still have an Australian accent living in the Black Country; I think I would be ashamed to have a Black Country accent.
