How can you say dialect and accents are awful? They are fascinating, helping to pin point settlement area's of saxon / viking / normans and the welsh and cornish languages are our links back to pre saxon cultures. Its great that we have so many variations through out the country that have evolved over thousands of years and should in no way be confused with slang or bad english.

    Accents and dialect are fine.
It is when people speak in an accent that is not there own.
    Devon kids sounding like londoners.
London kids sounding like they are from the Bronx.
    It is ridiculous.
I have worked with people who speak as I do, but as soon as they are around a few of their friends from out of work, they speak like they are some kind of gangter.
It is obviously not their accent, they just think it sounds cool.
    But why?

    Why not! :p

No I'm refering more to how London usually get everything it wants due to regeneration (nowhere else needs regeneration obviously)

Chavs are generally the cause of problems that then require regeneration

I think you follow my thought process here [face_thinking]

I am of Brummie heritage and I am so glad to hear that people like the brummie accent. So many people I have met just say they don't like it for the sake of saying it. Even when I mention that my family are from Birmingham they just say: "I 'ate Brummies".

I dated someone who openly said they don't like Welsh people! Whenever someone says something like that it sounds like they just have an issue with the accent and think that is a valid excuse not to like a population. Noone should ever assume what a person is like due to where they are from or what accent they have. Hell, my brother lives in Wales, he is originally from Leicester, and whenever he visits Birmingham he picks up the accent. Even if its just for one day, he picks up the twang. It doesn't annoy me, it makes me laugh.

As far as the way the youth of today use the English language (13-30), it makes me sick to hear them every single day.

Secretly, a part of me is glad that the Americans portray us as either cocknies or toffs in films. Rather that than be portrayed as chavs, never will we be immortalised on film as that stereotype.

I love the Irish accent *melts*

Taking on English language as an A level in september, so it's interesting for me to see peoples opinions on colloquial lanuage and accents and stuff.

Accents don't bother me too much, though it can get a little annoying when you don't understand a word someone is saying because their accent is so strong :p It's just "Chavtalk" etc that gets on my nerves really.

Now I can post again, I'm going to add my little point:

It really does my head in when someone goes "'ey mate, could I lend X, Y or Z off you?" I don't know about the rest of the UK but it happens all the time in a little hole called Formby where I reside. Another thing which gets to me is when people I meet (who usually tend to be from down south, although I'm not trying to stereotype here...) correct me when I say 'garage' for instance. I say ga-ridge, I am always corrected with "you mean ga-rahge...", but here everyone says that, same with many 'a's in English (bath, pass, etc). I haven't met anyone here trying to speak gangsta, most people just use 'mate', 'lah' (read 'lad') and other words tacked onto the end of sentences. Mind you, I do too, so why do I complain?! As for fillem instead of film, it doesn't bother me.

Oh yeah, I agree Irish is a sound accent mate.

    mmm...Irish girls...

Well I pronounce it 'ga-ridge', and I'm from down south and I sure as hell haven't met anyone who pronounced it 'ga-rahge'.

'Rents' instead of 'parents' irritates me, as does referring to your house as a 'crib'. As my maths teacher once said, to outsiders it just sounds too weird, there is no way someone would understand 'I'm going back to my crib to see my rents'...

I had that very conversation with my brother yesterday. He said ga-rahge so I promptly corrected him. Ga-raghe sounds too posh for me. Give me a good old ga-ridge any day.

Worse are people who assume because you might talk a certain way you must conform to thay stereotype. Or who diss your accent.

WOW, Dickie - I am a few stops away from you in Southport :p

And I agree with you on the whole lending thing. Gets on my nerves. Grrr.

And yep, if I had to pick the most beautiful accent, I would go for Irish, though it would be Dublin (Eire) rather than Northern Ireland.

Edit: Formby a hole? I never saw it that way myself lol. Though I don't tell that to my work colleague who comes from there. Lol, I'd laugh if you knew him - Darren Cahill? Ring a bell, he goes to the local pub there.
Formby had a fun Viking festival a few years back. Got the pics lol ;)

moogi_wan: I want this woman's name! No one insults the Popular People's Front of Wales (PPFW) and gets away with it!

Seriously though, imagine if she had said the same thing about Jews, Black people or Christians. There would be outrage.

I know we Welsh have a bit of banter with the London forum, hell we even invaded it a week or so back! But it was all in good fun and I would never commit myself to disliking someone just because of where they were born. I mean how can she make such a bold and sweeping statement about nearly 4 million people?

Meh, what do I care. We don't like her either. :p

Edit: I thought we were the Welsh People's Popular Front????
