The Fast and Furious films have gotten so bad. I started to watch Fast 9 last night. I had nothing else to watch. I turned it off a half hour in. They were driving through a CGI jungle being shot at? Are they secret agents? People forget how bad most sequels are these days.

People forget about the existence of Sturgeon's Law, especially in comparison with rose-tinted views of the past

The Fast and the Furious movies got better when they stopped pretending to be racing movies. They’re still all about the spectacle but at least they’re enjoyable now.

And to think I only cared enough to watch the first F&TF movie because it was more of a racing movie than an extension of Vin Diesel's XXX movies.

This whole thing about making characters sad is cliche; make a Mary Sue and people complain, give them problems and hardship and they complain.

I though making Logan a rumination upon aging and loss worked well for the character as he's cursed with long life. Indy, maybe not so much so it makes his story here a drag. Great payoff at the end, though. I really like the third act stuff and the final scene ending, for the MacGuffin artifact leading to something that is probably crazier than Crystal Skull and that had aliens in it!

I know Mangold said that Shia's previous comments about Spielberg had no factor in the decision with Mutt in this film but somehow
rip on Steven and your character dies face down in the %$#@ in Vietnam off screen. Anyway wouldn't Mutt be like 30 or something when he enlisted in 'Nam?

I really liked it. A formula picture that rips a lot off of Officer and a Gentleman but it still works. James Franco plays an underdog in his first year at the naval academy, Tyrese Gibson his commanding officer. The two reportedly hated each other but it works for the movie. The kind of movie critics hate but audiences like.

I... didn't really like this film. I wanted to like it. I went in expecting to like it. And I came out thinking I probably like the 60% of The Flash I liked better than this movie.

Probably because... it's not really an Indiana Jones movie? It's a good movie. It's a very good Helena movie. But it takes almost two hours for Indiana Jones to largely be the protagonist of the adventure, rather than trying to stop someone else's adventure.

Killing Mutt off screen seemed a bit mean, but I did love the reconciliation of Marion and Indy at the end. However, assuming they were not throwing out all of the Indiana Jones canon, it was hard to see them killing him off or leaving him in the past without him having an eyepatch already. I'd have liked this movie to have shown him losing the eye... :(

And Helena seemed way more sociopathic than Indy was at this point in his career -- him dressing her down for exulting in an escape in which his friend is murdered was pretty good stuff. And her having her own Short Round didn't soften that part for me.

Do we know exactly when he loses the eye? My recollection of Young Indiana Jones isn't that specific...

George Hall's Old Indy (and his daughter and his cheesy early 90s grandson) hasn't been official canon ever since Lucas had those bits removed from the Young Indy home video releases.

I mean, they've been constantly referencing YIJA in the films...

The series happened but those bits didn’t. It’s like how there was definitely a Justice League when Superman died but the JLA wasn’t founded by ****ing Aquaman.

As long as the Official Indiana Jones Journal (tm) still has its extensive references to Fate of Atlantis, all will be right with the world

What happened to Shia LaBeouf anyways? I remember him having some breakdown and wearing a bag on his head, but that's it.

We don't know exactly when or how, no. Regardless of if those scenes are canon or not, we know that those frame stories take place in the early 90's (essentially Present Day to when the series first aired on TV). So he could have lost it at any point in the ensuing 23 years, like the day after DOD, or the week before the chronologically first frame story.

Pablo seems to suggest that they still could be.

Does make you wonder if their removal was because they no longer wanted them to be canon, or if they simply were removed because they didn't fit the new chronological storytelling structure of the re-edited/expanded TV movie versions.

And, *technically* we still see old Indy's hands at the end of the new versions, IIRC :).

He was good in the movie about John McEnroe and Borg. But he's burned a LOT of bridges and Olivia Wilde fired him from her movie and cast Harry Stiles. he seems to have anger issues.

    Either way,
killing off a main character in Vietnam offscreen is probably the most George Lucas element about this movie ;). If he had thought about it back in 2008, I wouldn't have been shocked to see him just add a title card stating it, immediately after the wedding [face_laugh].

Wow how do you get arrested 10 times and not do any real time? He sounds like an absolute mess. Has a judge ordered him to rehab? I forgot he was a child star.

I played a little matchmaker at a local convention today. I was just walking around and saw a woman dressed as Marion from Raiders, then after walking around for another 10 minutes I ran into someone dressed as Indiana. I had Indiana follow me until we met up with Marion so I could take both of their pictures together. I'm pretty sure they stuck around together after that (they were definitely not together otherwise).

Just don't introduce Indy to the swordsman.
