Quite a potluck of a season opener. Din Djarin starts his new season-wide quest for the Sundari Sauna, another old character that supposedly died is about to get better, pirate gangs (no, not that pirate),
a big bug beast homage to an episode on another show that just aired 0 minutes prior
, and of course the Purgills (feels like a teaser for an upcoming show we all know of since the scene served no obvious purpose in this episode.)

Anyway, a 7 or 8. Star Wars feels fun again and for all the zig-zags, the episode just flowed well.

Moment with Purrgil was honestly eerie.

Seems like IG-11 storyline is going to be alike to HK-47's one from KOTOR 2.

    Pirates are stylish.

I could have easily spent an entire episode just with Din, Grogu and the Antellans; down in their home and with all of the banter and their facial expressions. I don't know why, but I was a little sceptical of the Babu Frik species in this series, but for me, it was hands down the best part of the episode. Like he (Famuyiwa) did with the Jawa characterisation, all of these little mannerisms, eccentricities and interactions between the Antellans and then broadened out to include Din (mostly) and Grogu, this is characterisation at its finest for me. And for me, it's what Famuyiwa does incredibly well. He gives a certain richness to these different species in making their interactions between each other so authentic.

Also, like he did with the Jawas and the inside of the Sandcrawler, it was a brilliant bit of world-building to have a home low to the ground like a mouse hole. It added more authenticity to the scene and makes the galaxy feel bigger too - where species are not restricted to large scale settlements to exist in the Star Wars Galaxy. Imagine how many "settlements" could have been walked past by larger species.

I really enjoyed the Bo-Katan interaction and what was discussed. Isn't it ironic that she calls TCOTW religious zealots with their "following" of ancient ways in not removing their helmets thing. Yet Bo, you sit there and refuse to lead your people just because you don't possess the Darksaber. Isn't that kind of the same thing where you replace the helmet with a lasersword. It's the following of some sort of system too.

But I agree, she is bitter and her parting whispered words appears to be setting her up as the "big bad" for Season 3.

And I enjoyed the rest of the episode too. I felt Season 2's opener with a big beast thingy was better than this opener, but I enjoyed the action sequences.

However, I do agree with @TCF-1138 that something felt a little off. For me, I think they tried to cram too much in in the opening episode; the formalities that is. We had to go back to the Armourer to define the Season's journey. We had to go to Nevarro to address the "Cara Dune" thing and to re-establish connection with Greef. And then we had to go to see Bo-Katan and set her up as the foe. Throw in everything else too and we are starting to talk TROS too much and too little time. The story didn't have time to breathe like it did in the first season.

Also on a side note, was that "white" threepio-like unit an Easter egg like Din's rifle was. It almost felt like an original concept design from many years ago??

    But overall, an enjoyable return.

Fun episode. I really like the opening battle with the kaiju during the ceremony.

And also some good humor there, I chuckled a few times.

Looking forward to the rest of this season.

The two year timeline with Luke and Grogu is a bit iffy when you consider those Mandalorian episodes were in the middle of The Book of Boba Fett series.

The only way this would work is if Fett took two years getting to Tatooine to kill Bib Fortuna as shown at the end of Mandalorian season 2.

God, I really don’t want offhand comments about timeframes being the focus of online discourse now…

But as far as Greef needing “a marshal”…

Din redeems himself next episode, brings the Children of the Watch to Nevarro to liberate it from a vengeful Swamp Thing dude, then Greef gives the clan the real estate he originally promised to Din and they get to settle back in on Nevarro, acting as it’s protectors instead of hiding underground. Everything is coming full circle.

Fantastic episode. A lot of groundwork for later payoff, that is obvious but even so, incredible amount of fun. Din and his ship doing what you would imagine a star fighter would do, Grogu being cute as always, the pirates coming back and back with seaweed head looking cool. Pirate gangs of mixed alien breeds and can I say, so many non-human aliens, loving it!

IG-11 going back to basics but Din going full character growth and not giving up on him and the Babu Frik types just being full on hilarious and Karga translating clear sentences to add to the humour. Katan broken, just a great episode. Man I've missed The Mandalorian.

Fantastic premiere. 10/10 in my book. That Vane is really a classic scumbag. I’m sure this will not be the last we see of Gorian Shard.

I guess Din’s trust issues with droids still continue? As he will only accept a rebuilt IG as a companion.

Will be interesting to see what the mines beneath Mandalore really hold. I’m more bound to believe Bo Katan, that it is all superstition, but maybe we are in for a surprise.

OK, just finished the episode. Honestly, the entire thing felt contrived. From the opening monster scenes to the pirate encounters. I was disappointed. It seemed to be trying to cater to children. It almost seemed like a video game. Go to the repair shop and get a quest. lol. And I didn't like Greef's outfit. But I felt that way from the trailers. That all said, I am of course going to continue to watch it. I expect there will be some cool moments. So far, it doesn't come close to being as good as seasons 1 & 2.

That’s it. Didn’t think of it at first, but I think he was definitely inspired by Davy Jones.

I mean, it's not really her thing. It was other Mando's that abandoned her, just because she doesn't wield the Darksaber. Which is why she disparagingly said "Just swing it around, they'll follow you."

Greef and Din's handshake was cool.
    "Dillon! You s.o.b!"

And I laughed when Greef's statue bust finally stopped the IG-Terminator from killing the asset.

    Good stuff.

I might have misinterpreted the scene.

When Din asks her about the missing Fleet, I felt that her reason for not being there and leading them was because she did not have the Darksaber. She then asks him if he still has it and suggests to him he should lead them.

But I may have misinterpreted what she said.

Hard to discern if the inference is that, without the Darksaber, she "cannot" lead or if the others "will not" follow.

My initial impression was that she was sitting their bitter and refusing to lead because she did not hold the Darksaber. But as you mentioned, it's abit hard to discern and it could well be what @Fandalorian said it was.

Maybe another episode or two will hold the hindsight perspective.

One episode in and you're going to judge the whole season? I would have thought that after several series and seasons we've all eaten enough of our initial impressions to fill a Hutt's belly.

IT sounds like no one will follow her without the dark saber. The Imperial star cruiser is being used by Mandalorian bounty hunters now.

So, the mini-Eclipse showed up. Wonder if it's a stolen warship? Looks Arquitens-ish in size.

I hope Din tells Bo and the Armourer that he is not following either of their ways and will redefine what it means to be Mandalorian
