Oh look, more ethnic cleansing in the Middle East. HTS (Al Quaeda - is that how you spell it? it’s been so long I forgot) is back to their old ways. Do any of the Atlantic cheerleaders feel bad about celebrating the Asad regime change now that it’s playing out? I guess they’ll pretend they never had any opinion before today.

That’s how it always is you see, they are consistently wrong in practice, and yet always correct in theory. Hedged, but also leveraged. The “chemical weapons” must have been real, but if they weren’t then they still mattered, conceptually. And in any case the bloodshed that happens outside their Overton Windows never matters at all, the essence of politics itself [face_dunno]

I can I think. The alawites are currently being massacred. There are reports that entire villages have been wiped out

there’s also maybe something happening in the south with the Druze and there are now assadist remnants roaming the countryside

Apparently we need to take ownership for a group which none of us trusted when they swept out Assad out of power. Everyone here, while being glad that Assad was removed, was extremely cautious about the regime which would follow. We then also need to deny Assad’s use of chemical weapons and support the ‘lesser evil’ of Assad, whose regime created the extremist opposition by emptying its prisons at the outset of the civil war. The literal reason there are no good guys left is because of Assad.

    Pure Tulsi Gabbard stuff.

My hope was they would be better not that they would be. And there was some good signs in the province they controlled if I had to guess the government will likely collapse especially if the Israelis go in to “help” the Druze

also Assad still deserved to be deposed anyone who literally employed a Nazi to learn torture techniques is a vile ****ing piece of human garbage

Many videos of the Alawites being slaughtered. Numerous unarmed people being shot dead. It's horrible. Syria will be divided up.

Where the heck does this Gabbard strain of political analysis come from? It’s the weirdest mix of things those people firmly believe in.

    Operation Timber Sycamore

“Oh, oh, we had no idea what was happening until now. We were always skeptics, we always opposed the war, because we are men of peace! It was only that witch, Tulsi Gabbard! Yes, she’s the one! [face_talk_hand]

This isn’t a gotcha most people have suspected or known that the US has been providing weapons to everyone for decades.

I don’t trust Tulsi cause she sucks assad’s taint and wants to borrow into Putins ass

    “Everyone”

Well no not everyone, they certainly weren’t giving weapons to Assad, at least not intentionally. Al Nusra Front yes, but not Assad. History is a real thing after all, and it keeps happening even after the favorites have left center stage.

Makes you wonder who “we’ve” been giving weapons to elsewhere, hmmmmm? [face_thinking]

The intention was to give the weapons to the non-extremist opposition. The program was discontinued due to weapons falling into hands of extremists, partly as a result of Assad emptying his prisons.

I wouldn’t support such a program today given the volatility and lack of prospects of any secular group in the long run.

But, of course, it’s easy to sit back and wash your hands of any policy prescriptions and the messy consequences of essentially all decisions made at the time. As we know with Ukraine, when Tulsi Stimm is asked to give policy prescriptions and insight at the time he comes up short.

With Gabbard, I imagine it comes from rightful skepticism of United States foreign policy, but at the same time overstating it and painting anyone in opposition to it as a victim. They often don’t really have a coherent ideological framework besides being generically liberal, so they don’t have a rival idea of global power like communist or fascists do, so it comes across as weirdly non-committal to anything.
