I spent ages as a kid trying to work out what the word 'stupidous' meant. As in ANH when Leia tells Vader, "the Imperial Senate were not so stupidous". She actually said "the Imperial Senate will not sit still for this". Or at least, that's what they SAY she said...

By the way, WAAAAY back at the beginning of this thread someone said they thought Leia told Han he was a 'scruffy-looking nerve-hurter'. I may be going out on a limb here, but... DIDN'T she? What DID she say?

The first thing I saw about Star Wars was when I was like 5 in 1989 and I went with my father to blockbuster to rent a movie and ROTJ was on the tv, it was when Lando saying something about cruisers, referring to the star destroyers and I thought they were like galactic tourist cruisers [face_laugh] like the ones you take to go to the caribbean but in the context of a galaxy.

I also believed the stormtroopers were robots.

And I thought Han Solo was a jedi that didn't believe in the force anymore. [face_laugh]

I love this thread, I've never read one that made me laugh so hard [face_laugh].

My first misconception came before I ever even saw a star wars movie. I got a Jar Jar Binks toy at taco bell, and had to give it away because I was sure star wars was "for boys" (I'm sure glad I was wrong about that).

When I first saw TPM, I was trying to figure out how the trade federation could be bad, since my only previous experience with science fiction had been star trek. I was certain that any type of "federation" should be good.

The Misconception I'm most ashamed of though is that before I saw the OT I was certain (having only seen TPM and AOTC) that episodes IV-VI were going to be "corny with bad special effects" and that they could never be as good as the prequels. Boy, was I wrong, and I'm sooo glad. Now I know that they are some of the best movies ever made!

<< She said "Nerf-herder". I believe they lived on Alderaan or something. >>

You know, despite the millions of websites insisting that this is what's said and the existence of a band and several other groups using this as their name, not to mention the fact that the subtitles say 'nerf herder', I still don't buy it.

I've listened to that sound extract a number of times and it could well be either. So until I hear definitively from someone who knows (don't suppose Carrie Fisher reads these boards, does she?) I'm going to continue to believe it's 'nerve hurter'. It makes more sense as a jibe, and also wouldn't require extra-complicated arrangements with Hasbro, who market the Star Wars action figures and also own Nerf... Unless, of course, it was the original bit of product placement...?

(For what it's worth I've come to treat all DVD subtitles as a rough guide rather than a transcript. Bad for deaf audience, but there you go...)

    They were shaaks.

Other than Leia's apocryphal mention of the creature, there's no reference to 'Nerf' as an animal anywhere in the movies or the EU.

This is the thread that convinced me to register and start posting here ;)

Let's see... before I saw ROTJ, I had seen a picture of the Force ghosts at the end. And I knew that Vader took his mask off. So... I thought Vader looked like the healthy, full-head-of-hair...-ed Sebastian Shaw under the mask. When someone told me he was all whitish and bald under the mask, I insisted I'd seen a picture of him and they were wrong.

And I missed the Rebel Base plotline in ANH. I was like "Whaaaaaaa?" when Vader was about to interrogate Leia. I thought they just wanted the Death Star plans back.

And in ESB, I thought the rebels were trying to... keep their base.

I was definately old enough to know better when it first came out, but I didn't immediately connect Palps and Sidious were the same guy when I saw TPM. What was wrong with me? :p

First, I don't think "Nerf" existed back then, if it did, then Hasbro would've had no problem what so ever letting Lucas use the name..it would have been an advertisment.. Hasbro owned the rights to the Star Wars toys, it wouldn't have made it more complicated, it would have made it easier to use the word. ...and I have the official screenplays to all the OT movies...trust me, it's "Nerf herder"..and why does "nerve hurter" make more sense? it actually makes less sense to me...exactly how does one hurt nerves, in a non physical sense? why is this an insult? if she ment it like "you hurt my feelings" then she'd have said "you scruffy looking feelings hurter." but not "nerve" it just makes no sense..would you say to someone "hey, you just hurt my nerves!"? I wouldn't..but then, I like to make sense. this was one of the things I actually got when I was a kid...I dunno...never knew what a "Nerf" was back then, but it always sounded like Nerf Herder to me. Lucas made up animals called wookiees...and ewoks...and rontos and Banthas etc.etc.etc., so why do you refuse to believe that he made up an animal called a nerf?

<< First, I don't think "Nerf" existed back then >>

It did. According to Nerf's site, anyway.

<< if it did, then Hasbro would've had no problem what so ever letting Lucas use the name..it would have been an advertisment.. Hasbro owned the rights to the Star Wars toys >>

Yes - I wasn't intending that part to be meaningful comment. More a little joke based on the fact that Hasbro marketed both products and that it would therefore be a good advert if the name was featured in Star Wars. I'm sorry I wasn't more clear and serious.

<< ...and I have the official screenplays to all the OT movies...trust me, it's "Nerf herder".. >>

And I've said I've listened and that I think it could be either. That means I'm not ruling out 'nerf herder'. It's just one of those little problems rooted in American pronunciation, in the tendency to soften 't' sounds in a lot of words.

<< why does "nerve hurter" make more sense? it actually makes less sense to me... >>

    That's that, then.

<< exactly how does one hurt nerves, in a non physical sense? why is this an insult? >>

I take it Americans don't get on each other's nerves a lot, then? It's a common enough expression here in Britain. Again, I guess it's just a cultural thing.

<< never knew what a "Nerf" was back then, but it always sounded like Nerf Herder to me. Lucas made up animals called wookiees...and ewoks...and rontos and Banthas etc.etc.etc., so why do you refuse to believe that he made up an animal called a nerf? >>

Where did I say I 'refuse to believe'? I don't 'refuse to believe' that there's an animal called a nerf. All I said is that I prefer the other interpretation and I'll stick with it until I hear an official declaration to the contrary. Like I said, there's no reference to 'nerfs' ANYWHERE else in Star Wars, I've never come across one in SWG, there's no mention of them on the official site... They're in your official screenplays - okay, that's cool. Don't get so worked up about it.

Leia: "Being held by you isn't nearly enough to get me excited."
Han: "Sorry, sweetheart. I haven't got time for anything else."

I was 7 when I first saw ESB, and that exchange went clean over my head. I didn't really think about it for years and years. I'd seen the film so often, I knew everything about it, right?

I must have been almost 20 before it hit me. Oh.....that's what that line means... Yikes! *fans self with hands*

Wooh- I suddenly feel like a geezer.

"Nerf" stuff was DEFINATELY around in 1980, and I think it was Kenner which was doing the bulk of the SW toys at the time, not that it makes much difference.
I never assumed that that line was a reference to "Nerf", the spongy substance. (who's to say that in the original screenplay it wasn't spelled "nerph" or even "gnirph" and the spelling was subsequently simplified?) At the time I don't think I made a connection with "herding", and just thought there was a thing in that particular galaxy called a "nirfherdur" which people didn't like to be compared with.

I remember so well watching the OT for the first time.

When Luke got his new hand in ESB I thought it was completely perfect. A whole brand new hand, no robotic parts or nothing. So when Luke cut of Vader's hand in ROTJ, and then he looked down at his black glove, I thought that that hand suddenly turned Vader-robotic. So I thought that for every part of the body Luke cut off of Vader, Luke would become more robotic ^^ So if Luke cut off Vader's head, Luke's head would turn into Vader's head.

    Yea... ^^

When I was a kid "Star Wars" was called "The race to the moon."
ANH was still 4 years away when I turned 18 :)

... and yes Nurf balls are older that SW and so are Frisbees, Hulla Hoops and Play Dough and homemade skate boards.
Video Games, very early PCs and Disco are about the same age.
MTV, Rap and Cell Phones came later.

    Let's see.....

    I thought that

Ben hadn't gone by the name Obi-Wan since before Luke was born
When Obi-Wan met Anakin, he was already a great star pilot, but Ben was amazed at how strong the force was in him
    Yoda trained Obi-Wan
    Han fired at Greedo first
Ben had no idea who R2 and 3P0 were
Anakin wanted Luke to have his lightsaber when he was older
Leia had memories of her real mother
The force was an energy field that bound the universe together
All Jedi disappeared when they died and then came back as ghosts
Owen blamed Obi-Wan for Anakin, who followed him on a "damned fool idealtistic crusade."
Darth was part of Anakin's "new" name, since Obi-Wan called him Darth
It only took 3-4 years to build a Death Star

When Luke falls down in the rancorpit and everybodys looking down on him there's a close-up on a jawa. When I was kid I thought that was artoo in disguise. Reason: the jawas eyes were so obviously fake I thought, and his body looks a bit stiff.
