What is your opinion of the most important character in the sitcom series "Seinfeld?" I do not want to hear that they all four were crucial in the success of Seinfeld, which is indeed true. I believe that Jerry is the backbone of the Seinfeld success. For obvious reasons, he was one of the creators of the show. However, the main action always revolves around Jerry, as he is constantly in the center of attention and is always shelling out advice to the other three characters.

So, Jerry is the most important Seinfeld character

    What do you think?

Jerry wasn't the funniest character on the show... George was. So George was more important for me.

George was funny, but you still could have made Seinfeld without George. It might not have been the same, but Seinfeld could have been produced and popular without George Castanza.

It wouldn't have been as funny... so it would not have been as successful...

Jerry's the least funny out of the four for me.

while George perhaps could have been the funniest..I wanted to know who was the most important cast member of the show..

For me, I think Kramer was the funniest character. His antics have never been reproduced from anybody else.

Jerry is the one who keeps Elaine, Kramer, and George in line. He is the most important

Newman is the most important. Everyone needs their villain.

Well the show is named after him, so I'd say Jerry is the most important.

But George is the funniest, and the show is a comedy, so he is just as crucial to the success of the show.

This is a sitcom about the (usually sexual) misadventures of flawed thritysomethings...there's no need to establish a 'main character' or protagonist like in a drama. All the characters have their moments, but George's pathetic existence makes him the funniest character overall. His lying, scheming and failing all make for great storylines.

while Newman is hilarious..especially the episode where he tries to kill himself by jumping off of the roof..i believe the real villian is within themselves (especially the funny guy george)

But, a good amount of the humor in George came from him playing off of Jerry. Actually, it was the same for a lot of the characters. Just put George, Elanie and Kramer in the show, and it would be funny, but not to the level that it was. They all needed the straight man in Jerry, that person who in his way, could provide the set up to thier jokes. Jerry Seinfeld did that very well.

Jerry was the straight man, but George was the funniest.

George Costanza: It became very clear to me sitting out there today that every decision I've made in my entire life has been wrong. My life is the complete opposite of everything I want it to be. Every instinct I have, in every aspect of life, be it something to wear, something to eat - it's all been wrong.

What I think some of you are getting at is that Jerry often acts as somewhat of a "straight man", or focal point, for the others to play off of.

Kramer has some hilarious and iconic moments, but overall George is the funniest.

No love for Elaine? Come on; that wacky dancing is murder.

Seriously, they all fill a different void and they're all great at the part that they play.

    My personal favorite? J. Peterman.

The success of the show was largely due to the fact that all of the four were the 'most important'. I could see taking out Kramer and not losing much, but the other three? Each is untouchable.
