So it was mostly because of John Williams that they didn't use the old themes very often.

That lines up with the (often repeated but not confirmed) rumor of him being displeased with R1 and being more protective of his themes since then.

After a few weeks of living with it, the main theme has really stuck with me. I find myself humming it regularly.

Hard to not be disappointed in it after the seminal work of genius Ludwig cooked up for Mando. Hard, hard act to follow. Almost unfairly so.

I have never seen that rumor and I feel like I've read every Star Wars rumor there is (from reliable sources). So I'm inclined to think this is not a particularly reliable rumor.

Same here. I can't really imagine him being that displeased with it, if at all.
Unless he thinks it's too derivative of his own work, which I could understand even though I personally think it's the best kind of derivative score.

    Yippee!! [face_party]

I have now listened to the score, and yeah, I love it. There are a few more nods to the Saga themes than I picked up on when watching the show, which was nice to hear, but most of it is new and fresh. The Saga themes really feel earned when they show up.

I'd say that it's not as exciting to listen to as the Mando/Boba soundtracks, as those are a bit more "rock'n'roll" for lack of a better term, but it's a soundtrack that really fit the story this show was telling. More akin to the Saga than the other shows, but still standing apart from it.

Trilla has a motif that is the last 3 notes of the Imperial March motif, that's pretty cool. So we've really been hearing the Imperial March through the whole series.

Kiner and the team used it for this scene in Rebels in a very foreboding way.

here's the payoff, when Trilla fails to defeat Vader and he's looming over top her as she's suffering in the dirt

Vader's theme. Not sure if we got this particular version in the show.

All of the music in this soundtrack, except for "Obi-Wan", is from the show.

How silly to call Reva "Trilla".

My mistake. Got my female, two-syllable, last letter "a" Inquisitors mixed. [face_whistling]

I went back and watched this sequence and this is actually not in the episode. So no, not all of the music is from the show. The piece in the episode is broken up by the flashback where Anakin stabs Reva and we hear the Vader motif from the end of the second episode instead of the Imperial March. Bummer, that would have been cool. I guess they really wanted to save the Imperial March for that last scene with Vader on Mustafar.

a more subtle, melancholic version of Reva's motif for her redemption moment.

I've listened through the whole thing twice, and it's quite solid stuff. It's easy to tell that William Ross' contributions adhere more closely to John Williams' aural textures, which I kind of prefer, since this series is essentially Star Wars: Episode 3.5. Still, Holt's work isn't without its highlights. "Ready to Go" in particular has a sweeping grandeur to it that I found unexpectedly moving. And I also dig the exotic tilt of "Mapuzo," even if the planet itself is pretty pedestrian.

The soundtrack has grown on me so much! I was now listening to it and I instantly pictured most of the scenes in my mind. "Some things can't be forgotten" is my favourite, it makes you feel so many emotions, specially the first 30 seconds and the ending. That's the melody that sounds at some parts of the flashback sequence when Anakin and Obi-Wan are sparring. It's very peaceful and relaxing, but it also has a bittersweet feeling to it that really makes you long for the old times when these two were brothers and fighting side by side :(

It's so weird to me that the marketing leaned so heavily into "Duel of the Fates" and "Battle of the Heroes," yet the series itself didn't make use of them at all.

I don't see why people are expecting old star wars music in a new series with a new composer just because old music is in the promotional material.

anyway I really liked this new stormtrooper/imperial theme. It tickeled my nostalgia bones and reminded me of Giacchino's Medal of Honor score. The common themes there being fascist/authoritarian enemies.

Really like the soundtrack album. It sounds like Holt was brought in then John Williams and Ross afterwards to punch it up and give more of a traditional Star Wars sound. It works quite well together I think.

If this was credited like a screen play would it be Holt and Williams & Ross?

I won’t complain that John Williams was brought in to make new music for Star Wars.

A friend of mine attended the 90th Birthday celebration concert for John Williams last week in Washington D.C. Williams always speaks so fondly of the music he wrote for Rey in the sequel trilogy. Daisy Ridley spoke on stage about Williams. Steven Speilberg seems to have been the master of ceremonies. I’m hoping this is available for us to watch soon. It’s probably the second time the Obi-Wan theme was performed in public - after Celebration.

Williams is as personally passionate about his most recent work as anything he created earlier. It’s sort of beautiful that Wiliams was so creatively inspired and in a way in love with the music he created in his 80s.

I really think he’s as good as ever. Williams doesn’t make as much content as he once did but what he puts out is at the same level as during any decade in his career.

I haven't checked for myself, but it's quite possible that some of the music in that track is from/used in a different scene in the show. It's very common for soundtrack producers to cut different parts of the score together into one track, like a medley, and make it sound like it was recorded that way.
...but it's equally possible that it was recorded this way and that parts of it were replaced. That's also very common, of course :)

I also love the "Empire Arrival" theme, it worked perfectly well with the scenes that the inquisitors showed up and it made their entrance look cooler. Vader's too, of course, but something tells me that his entrances would be cool even without music!
I swear, every time I hear that song I can picture them storming in with a badass attitude [face_laugh] They all have a flair for the dramatic lol
