Use this thread to identify strange ships.

I know that this question isnt related to literature but since Kyle Katarn is part of the EU universe, i just wanted to know one thing: in JK2:JO, just what kind of ship is it that Desann uses to get away from that asteroid base? B/c that is one helluva intersting looking ship, a star destroyer looking ship that looks more like a sound fork/tuner. ah thanks peple very much.

That's the Doomgiver, Admiral Galak Fyaar's flagship.

It could just be a custom-made purpose built vessel along the Impstar baseline. Not the concentration of dropcapsules along the underside. It may not be that much of a frontline combat cruiser.

    Then again, it's a just a game.

It looks quite a bit like a ship in the Star Wars "World of fire" story.

Thanks AdmiralZaarin. Ah, does it happen to be any type of class of ships or is it a custom job like Excellence said?

I'm pretty sure it's a custom job. Perhaps it is part of a lesser known class of planetary attack vessel. With all them pods, it's perfect for it's role.

A few other people at Robert Brown's old forums posted some concept sketches from LusacArts of the Doomgiver and IIRC we figured the Doomgiver was roughly 450-600 meters in length, based on a sketch showing the Doomgiver and its pods compared to an X-wing and TIE Fighter. For a rough idea of a ship comparison check out the Republic Acclamator-class Assault Ships seen in AOTC. The Doomgiver would be roughly 2/3 to 4/5 the size of those...

Wow. and in it's "big reveal" cutscene it looks like anotehr SueprStar Destroyer.

Actually in the JO game it DOES look like a super star destroyer, not 650 meters long. It looks at least as long as an ISD, but I'm just eyeing it. See for yourself. In the mission where you are sneaking through the Imperial asteroid base, after you black out the lights in teh room about 3/4 teh way through the level, look up, and you will see.

It very well could be much larger than the concept sketch. I've not yet finished off JO to see the actual cutscenes of the Doomgiver...

Not only that, but the placement of the engines are the same as a Super Star Destroyer, not an Impstar. I'm thinking Fyaar wanted a Super Star Destroyer himself, but lack or resources, a need to deploy troops quickly, or some other constraints made him choose that design - a Star Destroyer sized quick-deployment troop transport.

Yeah when I saw the cut scene i too thought it was a SSD when it was first comin out from underneath the asteroid but as it came out more, i was pretty amazed by the sight of it. Then next thing i knew i was thinkin that it was a \giant tuning fork with legs...i mean engines.

...or it could be a ship in the vein of "Imperial Prison Ship" line, like the one in way of the wookie:

The design seems like a needless waste of resources, money, and time. Why bother when standard vessels could do the job just as well, and more efficiently? Those pods look ready to break off if fired apon. What possibly could make them more affective than standard landing barges and shuttlecraft?

If you're talking about the comic book page... that particular ship isnt' much bigger than a really large freighter, and still smaller than a Trade Federation cargo vessel, judging from the Millenium Falcon's engine swoosh and the ship itself for scale.

Well that doesn't entirely work as the ship appears to change sizes throughout the story of way of the wookie, :p. In a later section Han is nearly pulled into it's cargo hold by a tractor beam as well.

But still it probably smaller than the doom giver as the best comparison is on a later page when it is next to a imperial star destroyer and appears to be nearly the same size, though that is hard to be completely sure, due to the 2-d art, and lack of depth perception due to artists style.

Though doom giver appears to copy the design of that ship at least in appearance.

A pity we can't work out how many TIE's that thing carried, specially' as there was no visible hanger (as far as I can remember). Talking about the Doomgiver btw.

Well, when I was playing the game I went through roughly 4 or 5 hangars for TIES. Seemed maybe that each could hold about a dozen each or so. But there is probably more hangars and stuff elsewhere.

    D'oh!
    *slaps head*

Of you walk thro' the hangers, silly me. Even tho' some TIEs were probs supporting the drop I find it hard to believe that Rougue Squadron held of the Doomgivers TIE's untill Katarn brings down the shields. :)

Anyway when playing the game I had the impression tht the Doomgiver was not bigger than a Super but was larger than a Destroyer. But thats not really supportable evidence is it? ;)

It does indeed bear a strong resemblance to this Dungeon Prison Ship.

    Actually it's Imperial Prison Ship.

A Dungeon Prison Ship looks like this:

    anyone know what it is?

excuse me for typing with no enthusiasm, last time i did it was deleted before answered, instead of just combined with this thread [face_plain]
