When they say 'Maw irregular fleet' what exactly are they referring to? Didn't the Jedi hide in the remains of the maw facility during the Vong war? Where exactly has Daala been?

I call the climax of the book as being a newly revealed to be reborn Thrawn, the only person who would be a military threat to Caedus, being assassinated in a suicide bombing by a brainwashed Ghent with Karrde being caught in the blast!

    Or not. :p

I get the impression that Tahiri killing Pellaeon was NOT part of her orders from Jacen.

What interests me are the following:

Pellaeon's death has been described as ordering the fleets to side with Niathal as opposed to Jacen. So, is the GFFA now officially in civil war between Jacen and Niathal?

If by prevail you mean lose his connection to the Force, explosively decompress, or get his butt handed to him by Luke.

I think that if there's a civil war, Caedus has to win for him to still be a credible threat in Invincible. It's hard to credit Jacen as a great Sith Lord if he rules the galaxy for exactly three months before getting downed. This is why I'm torn about the ending.

I desperately, desperately want Jaina to finish him and prove what an awesome knight she is, but I also desperately want Caedus to come across as a villain of Vader-calibre and for that I really think he needs to reign in terror for more than a couple of months.

Regarding the possible civil war, I'm a little disappointed with the overall plot-decision to have the Remnant side with Caedus while keeping the "good" GA with Niathal. Having the Empire surprisingly side with Niathal while most of the GA stick with Jacen would have been awesomely confused and would be an interesting set-up for Legacy. It would also have been a great chance to discuss the power and flaws inherent in democracy, the necessity of democracy, and contrast that with the "good" but violent and autocratic power of Niathal and her alliance with the Empire.

I'm also worried that this will set up the scene for Niathal to be characterised as the "good guy". This may be a groundless worry, but the fact that she's not as insane or evil as Jacen doesn't...change anything that started this war, or her behaviour in, effectively, a military coup. Niathal was still taking strong-arm positions that Corellia was balking at. I hope that in the joy of "Oh, we've defeated Jacen!" we don't forget the issues that started the war in the beginning and have Corellia happily return to the fold with no further mention of the political issues in Betrayal.

Now I'm starting to understand why LotF took such an irrecoverable nose-dive after Betrayal.

    Good stuff.

Pretty accurately sums up my feelings in regards to everything, but in particularly, in regards to the Remnant joining Caedus. Very disappointed. I was really hoping for a "Evil Galactic Alliance versus the Heroic Imperial Remnant" to follow on from LotF.

It would better explain why the Empire is so successful in recruiting new planets *without war* if they were seen as the galaxy's liberators.

QFT. Niathal and Luke started this war. Jacen just agreed with them, and followed their teachings on how to secure peace to the logical conclusion.

Remember, though, Jacen's the one who's been given the good PR. The character has an awesomeness trapped inside him, too. He's fun, or he has the potential to be.

Jacen, Tahiri and the Moff Council vs. Luke, Niathal, Boba Fett and Daala?!

    Well, that's a bloody no-brainer, isn't it? :p

Niathal wasn't the puppeteer in this war. It was the Solos. They are the true enemy in this. Leia, Han, their demon spawn son, and T-1000 Jaina(I like her but her no emotion attitude can be scary).

I just pray Allana has more of her mother in her.

anyone else beginning to think DR only believe you die if murdered? Seriously, yes Pellaeon was old and it was about time he died. But he could have done that from old age! Bets on Garm Bel Iblis being murdered accidentally by the ghost of Alema Rar in Invincible for no other reason then the fact he's about 100? There are other ways to get rid of characters but it seems only Ackbar can die of old age.

Planet of Twilight is what I think you're actually remembering. I do agree that the farther she gets from the Maw, the saner she seems to get . . . but she's got a long road to go. Her tactical and strategic ability is also fairly laughable. She gets a massive fleet and the element of total surprise, and what does she do with it? Waste it on guerrilla strikes against undefended targets that serve no actual military purpose. She's a deranged terrorist, not a leader of fleets. She's definitely dedicated to the Empire and she did unite the warlords and reduce the discrimination, and we're pretty much told that Pellaeon is behind all the administrative work there in Darksaber. She outlines some reforms, yes, but she's not the one doing the heavy lifting. She throws in about two good ideas and goes off to hurl herself blindly against the New Republic again. Pellaeon pretty much tells her to get her act together administratively, that there's more to be an admiral than running around shouting "DAALA SMASH!" He tries to get her to pay attention to actually running the Empire, and, in a classic, completely un-self-aware KJA line, "Daala glanced at the numbers but felt her green eyes glaze over. This was not her strength." Basically, she's an imbecile who can't get beyond her default setting of DAALA SMASH! I'd hope that after a while she'd stop being so, well, insane, vengeance-fueled, and tactically bereft, but . . . Karen's got a horrible, horrible, horrible foundation to build on.

I?ve finished the book, but it?s lunchtime here and I need to eat. :p I?ll try to return later this evening to share some more spoilers.

In the meantime, I wanted to quickly clarify a few things regarding spoilers I?ve already revealed that have come up in the thread since my last post.

Daala only arrives to aid Pellaeon, at his request. She still hates the Moffs, and does not aid them. After Pellaeon?s death at Fondor, she continues to fight alongside the GA (as Pellaeon had ordered) against the Moff-led fleet (allied with Jacen). Pellaeon?s flagship is retaken at her direction, and his body recovered for her (along with the bodies of the Moffs aboard his ship who?d turned against him ? and died for it). She refuses to return Pellaeon?s body to the remaining Moffs on Bastion, and does not ally with them or go to Bastion herself.

So yes, for the Felpire fans, there is now a conspicuous power vacuum atop the Remnant. [face_devil]

The remaining Moffs side with Jacen. They do this because Jacen had promised the Empire that it could ?acquire? Borleias and Bilbringi if it came to the GA?s aid against Fondor. The offer had been accepted, with Pellaeon?s agreement. After the Fondor battle, the Moffs still want those planets, so they?re still siding with Jacen to get them.

Daala is on Mandalore at the end of the book because her stash of trinkets from Palpatine?s Maw facilities includes quantities of beskar, which her own scientists have been unable to forge properly. That isn?t a problem for the Mandos? [face_mischief]

Tahiri?s assassination of Pellaeon was part of her mission all along. If Pellaeon backed out of the deal to aid Jacen, she was supposed to take him out so the pro-Jacen Moffs could continue it.

Yes, after Fondor there are two GA regimes. Jacen on Coruscant, Niathal at Fondor.

In case it?s not already clear, the political/military plot of the book revolves around a single major event: an operation against Fondor, led by Jacen, which begins with an attempted blockade and ends with a fleet battle among forces led by Jacen, Niathal, Pellaeon, Daala, and the Fondorians.

Okay, I?ll be back later on with more spoilers on new topics.

For what it?s worth, on a non-plot-related note, the POV characters in the book are (in order of POV appearance):
    Jaina
    Ben
    Pellaeon
    Caedus
    Boba
    Niathal

    Pelly POV? Awesome.

This does indeed leave a conspicuously awesome opportunity for Soontir to sweep out of the Unknown Regions, pistol-whip the moffs into submission, and establish his awesomeness, ready to turn it over to Jag eventually.

And do we have any details on Niathal-loyalist officers? Does Tycho or Gavin appear?

    And what about Jag?

Very interesting. It is not as bad as I thought. My main question is, how does the politics on Coruscant play out? Does Jacen plot a coup against Niathal or something? In Betrayal its mentioned that Fondor was one of the main rebellious worlds, so has Niathal joined the Confederation? Traviss's forte is writing the politics, so this the part of the book I'm most looking forward to.
