ST The Rise of Skywalker - Reviews/Reactions Thread (See Warning On Page 98)

Because critics review the actual film, not the one you thought you were entitled to.

 

Ah yes, anticipating another select round of "the best since ESB" reviews. Unlikely that we'll get anything as dramatic as the TLJ polarity of "best Star Wars film" and "worst Star Wars film."

 

"People will be analyzing this film forever"=mystery boxes never opened?

 

I have no how this film will actually be ....but... I could envision a lot of 'good, but not as good as TLJ' type headlines. A lot of media sites raged about TLJ, for months, so that's a high benchmark to maintain.

 

That's kind of the point. I was 5 years old. If one's argument is that it was more adult, and one was an adult when it came out, that may be your truth. But if one's argument that it was about telling fables and selling toys to children, then yeah, we hated the hell out of that movie and enjoyed ROTJ more.

 

A lot of the film critics loved it, so I find people questioning it's basic film making qualities even more interesting. I still think it's great in parts and doesn't land on others

 

Did Hayden Christiansen see it and do a review? Heard all his scenes were deleted in the final cut. From the Mike Zeroh YouTube rumors anyway

 

I'm excited about the film and like the new things I've heard. However, Boyega and Isaac's reactions worry me a bit. They seem tentative, anxious, and like they aren't sure what to say.

 

Cos they know anything they do say will upset someone or be taken the wrong way and they want to protect something theyvet worked on for years

 

I’ll definitely be interested in what Mark Kermode has to say about it.

 

They may just be hungover. Partying like there's no tomorrow after having seen it, finally done with the whole trilogy. "Good work!" etc.

Or they think it's ****.

 

He loved the last Jedi..He said it was the film where he finally understood what all the fuss was about it and he got it after disliking or being indifferent to all the other films. Fascinating

 

I could see that he is a huge Blade Runner fan and Last Jedi does have a lot of parts that remind me of Blade Runner in certain filming aspects

He loved elements of the TFA and was very positive about TLJ. And this after being a self confessed non SW fan. For example his rants about the PT are quite amusing

 

And it did feel like an honest review. As was his The Force Awakens review prior to it.
He recognised it isn’t without its flaws (the Casino stuff didn’t work and just felt like a distraction.)
Overall, the arcs of the characters made sense and the drama of the narrative was engaging.
The huge spectacle and massive explosions did not outweigh the tiny explosions felt in the minds
of the characters. Spot on review in my opinion.

 

The ‘Lucas couldn’t direct traffic’ comment in his review of RotS was funny

 

That (along with the related, "Better than Empire") has been said ad nauseam in 2002 (AOTC), 2005 (ROTS), 2015 (TFA), and 2017 (TLJ). If I had a dollar for each time, I would be retired right now.

It is lame beyond belief. It feels to me as though many of those professional reviewers didn't even pay attention during those 4 films (just as they won't during TROS). It's so much easier to nod off during the film, and then pull up one's old AOTC review and then copy, paste, replace (modify: replace each occurrence of "Attack of the Clones" with "The Rise of Skywalker"), and publish. "There's my review! Where's my paycheck?"

 

Even Rogue One got that tag too. Not sure if Solo did or not, but wouldn't surprise me if some reviewer said that
