You said you that someone 'promoting' their social views in their review wasn't an honest movie review. Ergo a dishonest one. I didn't say you said they were lying.

How about Georgy pants? The only critic that matters.
Anyone know if he's seen it? Curious to hear what Mr. Lucas says. I'm sure his words will be carefully picked

Oh it is a joke. A joke that people actually believe that nonsense. Captain Marvel did well because every MCU movie does at least pretty well. Damn good movie too.

This was an actual conspiracy theory people were making up. Here's a video debunking the nonsense.

I should have been clearer that I was mocking the conspiracy theory. :)

The review embargo lifts on the 18th, right? The movie opens on the 18th in a lot of countries so that'll be weird.

The world premiere isn't until the 16th which is a little later then TFA/TLJ so that is probably why.

Captain Marvel was a damn good movie. Brie gave some stupid interviews no one asked for but thats all. The movie was really fun to watch and she did well in there.

But Midway IS horrible. Not the best example.

Why does this myth persist? ESB was critically well-received at the time, and not at all divisive in the fandom.

I think we were 'mad' that we had to wait. Because we wanted to know what happened next. Because we liked the story. lol

I’ve read that twice now, and each time I always want to fit it into a narrative about ESB being the critcially divisive film that the fans and audiences actually loved while TLJ is the critcially praised film with divided fans and audiences; this fits with my view of ESB being a truly daring film that’s genius was realozed later but was still definitely able to connect with audiences even if critics checked out, while TLJ is a pretentious film that critics eat like catnip in a way that exposes where they can be just as shallow as the LCD audience members they sometimes mock...

...But that’s not provable at all, it just what I want to be true.

We don’t have anything really reliable enough to really gauge overall audience and fan reactions in a way that could accurately compare to any succeeding Star Wars film, save maybe ROTJ due to their proximity in release and close narrative connection.

We can’t really compare ESB to TLJ until we see how time treats it as the years pass, where it will still end up being more of a “how’s it doing now?” query instead of an actual reception-at-release comparison.

And TROS is going to really need time to see how it should be perceived as an ending to the trilogy and Saga. It’s got so much pressure built on it in both perspectives...

It's the only MCU movie I actually managed to enjoy in 2019. Yet, it's not a big favorite of mine from the franchise.

It's odd. I really enjoyed the middle films of both the Original and Prequel trilogies. Yet, I can't stand the middle film for the Sequel trilogy. I thought I would. I guess not.

I thought Attack of the Clones was fantastic. But I also thought that The Last Jedi flopped. So I'd agree with you, AEHoward33.

I was 10 when Empire came out and remember clearly absolutely loving it and thinking it was better than the original Star Wars. It's still my favourite to this day. However I also remember clearly how I felt after seeing 'The Last Jedi' and it wasn't a good feeling.

I been to all opening midnight premieres since AOTC and I would say my best experiences were by far ROTS and TFA when I saw last Jedi I had a fun time but I was sat there like "What have they done to Luke? This is completely wrong and when Snoke got killed I was like eh way too early doesn't work with Ren either as he is not threatening enough. I hope TROS is a good experience I suspect it will be as my expectations are not that high after TLJ but Ian mcDiarmid alone will make it a fun night.

All that really proves is how much more literate film reviewers were in 1980. And what an era of cinema they were living through! Compare and contrast to today's teal and orange graded wasteland, a monotony broken only by piles of discarded spandex outfits and bubbling pools of nacho cheese...

Until a TLJ hater tells us why this is the antidote to that mess I'm not getting my hopes up!

I don't know, I always find it amusing that people harp on about golden ages of cinema where originality ruled and everything was good. We've always had sequels, remakes, adaptations, and lots of really, really bad movies. There were plenty of critics in 1980 who were lamenting the death of cinema they claimed to be witnessing, and there have also been plenty of great original movies released in 2019. Within a few months, we've gotten Ford v Ferrari, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, The Irishman, Jojo Rabbit, Knives Out, and The Lighthouse. All great movies, most with wide appeal, and both box office and audience success. And that's just within the second half of this year alone.

It was in 1974 already. Everyone who complains should be forced as punishment to listen to this song 24 hours

I think you have a good point here. I fall in this trap all the time thinking movies were better way back when, but in reality there are just as good ones around now. They just look more modern because, well, time moves on. We can't really draw a line in the sand and say that everything before this was pure quality. It depends on your taste. Simple as that. Some people are entranced by Picasso, others adore Rembrandt. Different times, different styles, but with us still.

There are many times I miss certain 70's qualities in movies but if the director has a keen enough eye he can pretty much recreate those if he so wished.
