Any time there's an essay like this the writer always immediately contradicts themselves which disqualifies the content. Why are the Reylo detractors dismissed with insults when the writer immediately reduces the Finn/Rey relationship as cute, and shallow? Can't take mess like that seriously. How about some objectivity?

If the reincarnation theory does turn out to be true, she was possibly left on Jakku temporarily for her own safety by her family who probably were murdered while fleeing (the novel mentions a ship getting swallowed by blackness... so I am assuming their craft was destroyed).....because I somehow seriously doubt Luke, Leia or Han would make the crazy decision to leave a 5 year old girl to be brought up by someone like Unkar Plutt.... I wont be surprised if her family was being persecuted because of her abilities and someone wanting to kill her (Not Kylo since he would be too young at this time) so they left her there but died before they could come back for her.....what would be interesting is if she was born to a family who worshipped the dark side of the force....if there are churches of the force, then maybe they'll bring back something like church of the dark side from SW legends?

I think they sort of explained the doll in Rey's Survival guide....it is linked to the helmet she plays with in the movie as well....it has the name Dosit Raeh (I think) on it and she liked imagining herself and captain Raeh going on adventures....in the same vein, she created the doll when she was 10 years old using junk ... it is supposed to be an alliance pilot...she mentions how traders tell stories and that is where she heard about Chewie and Han Solo.....there is also mention of how she likes studying languages, spaceship design and flight simulations on a computer she created from old parts....so the pilot doll might be more about her aspirations for adventure than something from her past....but one never knows....:)

I read another prediction somewhere (have to find the link) that foresees Rey taking an oath to Snoke and joining the dark side at the end of Episode 8... Rey descending into the dark side (for at least a while) seems a highly probable and would be a major cliffhanger.... :D

I even doubt you had read the article because "cute" is mentioned but not in a contemptuous way and "shallow" is not even mentioned. It's also easy to say things like the writer contradicts herself without pointing out where is the contradiction.

I agree with the sentiment already expressed that this blog being dismissive of Finnrey as shallow doesn't really make the point. Both sides belittle the other to make their own ship sound better. That's actually okay because there's a reason, imo, we like what we like and dislike what we don't. Criticism of what we don't like is perfectly fine and good for discussion. None of us need to be self-righteous about it, though, and neither side has a monopoly on that.

But to this point specifically, I really don't think Wuthering Heights is a good comparison, and this is exemplary of why Reylo has such little appeal to me. Wuthering Heights is about a mutually destructive relationship. Heathcliff and Catherine are equally messed up, albeit in different ways. They're also both awful people. That relationship is not comparable to an all evil darksider looking to take over Darth Vader's mantle hooking up with his all light side kidnapping victim that he threw against a tree and knocked out. There is nothing mutually destructive about Kylo and Rey. Kylo is destructive. Rey defends herself. They are black and white. I think Reylo supporters make a much better point when talking about yin and yang as opposed to Wuthering Heights (imo, of course).

Also, I keep seeing the discussion of the two torture scenes contrasted to demonstrate a supposed gentleness with Rey. This point doesn't work for me at all. If Kylo was that determined to be gentle with Rey, I would have expected him to do something besides throw her forty feet in the air against a tree to knock her out. That was pretty violent and certainly not gentle. So taking the idea that Kylo was intentionally gentle with Rey because he has a thing for her off the table, how about a different proposition? Kylo needed different information out of Rey than he needed out of Poe. What he needed from her, Rey wasn't actually capable of consciously providing him. He had to get inside her mind and see what she saw. Out of Poe, he needed a quick and easy answer - where was the map. Perhaps those two different goals required different strategies. Perhaps Rey being more open to his mind probe would make it easier for him to step in her shoes and see the map in her brain. Perhaps therefore, he was trying to manipulate her into a false sense of security. His tone of voice that she shouldn't be afraid really supports that to me. It was very cold, and not at all actually concerned with whether she was afraid.

Now, as far as impressions of the scene goes, it never occurred to me, both times I saw the movie, that I was supposed to think Rey's torture scene was tamer than Poe's. On the contrary, I found it much creepier, and I thought I was supposed to find it that way. In general I think when an interrogation scene alludes to rape ("I can take what I want") my instinct is to think I'm supposed to be getting creeped out, not seeing romantic hints. The intimacy of Kylo's probing in Rey's torture scene wasn't nicer than Poe's beating, imo. It was arguably a worse violation. He went to her loneliness, her dreams, her private moments, without her consent. That was an emotional violation and she couldn't stop him (at first). She recoiled from him while crying, and ultimately forced him out of her mind. She hated what he subjected her to, and not just because she was strapped to a table. She hated the act of him throwing her personal thoughts in her face as a manipulative means of getting the information he needed to murder the last jedi.

It could be because the possibility of Reylo is building up a bit of momentum in wider opinion (or at least that how it appears to me). People are now rewatching the movie and reviewing, requestioning and reexamining certain scenes, spotting things they didn't catch the first time round and looking beyond what is presented at face value. This is probably why the mere mention of the "R" word causes a certain other ship to immediately throw its toys out the pram.

EDIT: ..throw its toys out the stroller (might make more sense to some!)
