Well, there's a loophole in Kylo's childhood or adolescence, we know Leia felt guilty because she sent her son away to train with Luke. We know Kylo was disappointed with his father. We know Han is an independent adventurer and that Leia has devoted her life to the Resistance. I think we should know Kylo's version to have a better understanding of the situation. I will never condone Han's killing but I need to know all the facts before labeling someone as this or as that.

Also why did Luke go on exile, withdraw from the world to live isolated in an island for so many years? There's still so much information we need to know...

That I would be interested in. If this happens I WANT a reformed Kylo. But it would be the only way I would want a potential Reylo romance.

It's the classic "pretty bad boy" ship. It's the same reason Draco was shipped with everyone in the Harry Potter fandom. Make your villian attractive and there's bound to be at least a few fan girls who realize the hidden heart of gold supposedly within him.

Oddly enough, make your antagonist grotesque and nobody will touch them. Gee, I wonder why?

That's fine but for me, personally, I don't know WHAT would make me ok with what he did. The fact that Kylo had all 3 of those figures, Han, Leia, and Luke, available to him though, makes me feel that there was a better option to solve whatever issues he had. Also Rey had absolutely NO one growing up on a savage planet fending for herself living on almost nothing. Yet she emerged from that strong, fearless and ethical. She had every reason to turn into what Kylo is, yet she didnt. Why is that?

Well I've had Finnrey type chemistry with 'female friends' as a male and it's turned into more than that. Just saying that I have a RL parallel with what Finn and Rey have and could potentially have.

I think the difference between Rey and Kylo is analogous to the difference between Luke and Anakin. Both Anakin and Kylo grew up in situations where they likely had the weight of potential on their shoulders (not to mention a shadowy figure manipulating them.)
Luke and Rey both grew up without the burden of great expectations. They don't find out about their great potential until they are adults. That is an important distinction, IMO.

It's gotten to the point that instead of looking forward to listening to discussions of TFA, I am letting the podcast episodes pile up and not listening to them since most of them have convinced themselves that Rey IS Luke's daughter. In the event she isn't a Skywalker at all, I seriously cannot WAIT to hear their reactions to that; they'll have to eat their words!

If anyone happens to listen to SW podcasts and does find some which cover ALL of the possibilities of who Rey's parents might be, please let me know. I haven't come across anything about Reylo either, but if I do I'll be sure to share. :)

I LOVE all of L.M. Montgomery's works, and find her to be such an interesting woman. The whole story of Anne and Gilbert and their offspring (Poor Walter!) is amazing, especially because you can see how in the books how life was before WWI and what it was like after. Have you read The Blythes Are Quoted? If not you should pick it up; it takes the family into the beginning of WWII. But my absolute favorite book of her's is The Blue Castle, which is where I got Valency Jane from. I saw the trailer for Far From the Maddening Crowd and it looked really good; I have it on my list of books I need to read and movies I need to see.

Your question is a big reason their foil is so so interesting. A girl with nothing but is still such good, hopeful person vs a boy with everything yet it's not enough for him. I think that is done on purpose to show these opposites. It ultimately comes down to that baseline temperance we all have. Psychologically speaking, some people have more mental strength than others, this is 100% true. The same thing can happen to two different people, yet I may crumble while the other is resilient. Why does that happen? There are so many factors, genetic and environmental that shape who we become. We have yet to really know why Kylo and Rey are the way they are. Cue episode 8.

Also, we still don't know if Rey was just abandoned by her family or whatever. If that did happen, I imagine her to be heavily persuaded by the dark side, but I think she'll be strong enough to overcome.

Rey hasn't been aware of her Force till she's been a grown up. Kylo has been aware of his Force since he was practically a kid and probably, Snoke was after him at that tender age, do you know how impressionable can be a kid who is gifted with the Force and coveted by the Dark side?

I have outlined as many reasons as possible for why I don't feel empathy for Kylo. If y'all do that's fine, and I'm not trying to change your mind, I'm telling you my personal reasoning.

He's not a child anymore, he's a man and he certainly isn't helpless, he made the choice to kill his father and commit acts of torture and violence and he has to live with the outcome from that.

If you all want to wait further for his story to be explained that's great. Speaking for myself I despise the character, and yeah, a sympathetic back story might back me off to a degree, but not that much.

Not to dismiss you in anyway, because it is such a fair point, but I think it could be one of those scenarios when the parents just overshadow their kids, and they have to act out somehow. It reminds me of celebrity kids a bit. But again, we don't know much about Ben Solo's childhood. Whether and how they delve into his past could make us sympathise him more (or not at all) when it comes to this regard. Maybe he was well loved and entirely supported, but still rejected them, or he just crumbled under the glory of his parents and uncle. It is just how the writers choose to tell his story, and they could as well make it relatable for Kylo to be a sympathised figure, even with Han, Luke and Leia in his background.

As opposed to Rey, I don't see why someone who is struggling with their life have to be flawed ethically. As for being strong and fearless, I believe that is a necessity for living in a desert planet. I'm sure there is a way of explaining the kind of person she is even being in her dire situation.

EDIT: Sorry, you replied just before I posted.

He still had people available to help him though, to sort out whatever issues he had. We don't know when exactly Snoke started influencing him but I'm betting it was after a time Kylo was aware of right and wrong. I really really have a strong issue with absolving him of any sense of responsibility.

So let's look at Kylo's family:
Grandfather: The Chosen One and Darth Vader
Grandmother: One of the leaders in the Senate
    Father: general and war hero
Mother: princess, general, war hero, leader of the resistance
Uncle: general, war hero, ended the rule of the emperor, last of the Jedi

To say Ben Solo had some shoes to fill and some great expectations, whether real or perceived, is putting it mildly.

Yep, rather than not being the most heralded and maybe having to "wait" for any sort of power, the dark side looked more attractive. Maybe Han/Leia/Luke wanted him on a certain path. Maybe Han discounted his Force powers. Adam Driver said that Kylo truly thinks he is right and I am sure they will delve into the "why" more. Anakin's was the story where we truly saw the rise of a villain so far and why he was pulled that way. Did Snoke just straight up brainwash Kylo?

Yes, Kylo is a grown man but acts like a teenager sometimes, even though he is 29-30. I would have thought he was younger if not for Pablo confirming his age. It's an interesting dynamic.

It's cool, well to be fair I feel much the same way about celebrity kids that I do about Kylo :p

People being flawed ethically in dire living situations is common. That's why I appreciate the character of Rey so much, she maintains those ethics in spite of what she's been thru.

Well we are all waiting for the whys, but for me the 'whys' have to be significant for me to be alright with Kylo. Like Everest-size significant.

the thing is, to most of us (i presume) he really doesn't come across as an adult.

he's very much a kid in most things, and i remember initially i was wondering, how old he is supposed to be. because i thought driver looked very very young and was he playing younger? and it turns out he's his age...

it also made me think about how it feels like he is kept in that state of childishness. like i said somewhere upthread, i fear repeating myself, he is massively enabled. there is something about that i find very weird. the way he is presented and acts is someone who is allowed anything. he is pretty out of control in some ways and how useful is that in someone in a position of command?

he's a liability. and he's not very good at his job. when push comes to shove he's actually not ruthless enough.

anyway, i have no real intention of judging this character, i think you may have gathered that. everyone is already judging him and i feel like he's judging himself the most anyway.

i get what you are saying about right and wrong. i think much of what he has done will come back to haunt him, no matter how much he repents. i can't see any other way.

but something about him only being able to confide in that horrid mask and to an extent being able to talk to rey is really haunting me about this guy, too.

So no one has any agency over their path, it's all genetics? Not buying that.
