An interesting way of looking at Lynch's film that I'v seen mentioned before is that minus the sound tech stuff it almost feels like the kind of propaganda film Paul's priests from the books would make promoting his rise to power basically showing his powers as more "magical" to the degree he actuals makes it rain at the end, no hoodwinking of the Fremen's relgion or questioning of the morality of a holy war plus of course the Harkonnens and to a lesser degree the Emperor/Guild as more over the top in their evil.

The big potential shift of another would be really confronting the nature of his powers, genetic memory and analysing probabilities that actually allow for prediction of future events.

 

Dune og6 are fantastic reads. I ve read them 3 times and they get better each time. Seriously go get bk 1 atleast if y'all haven't read these classics yet. FH was ahead of his time writing these. The only BH/KJA I read were the 2 to finish up the OG story. I would reco to try and read those atleast once(I didn't read on my rereads) and then never touch any of the others. My favs 3,5&1. Least fav is 2.

Lynch ver sucks. Mini series were really cool minus the painted backgrounds from 1st. The CoD is my fav of the 2. I really like what I call the music video in part 1 of CoD lol.

I am 23 pages into God Emperor of Dune. If the rest of the book is this interesting I'll be happy.

GEoD was my least fav the 1st time I read the og 6. It became a completely dif bk on my 2nd time. LOVED it then. I ll look foward to what you think of HoD when you get to it.

Alright, so what is with people in this book always making these weird utterances like "Ah-h-h-h" or "Um-m-m-m-ah-hm-m-m"? How is that even supposed to sound?

 

What's with people making crazy noises in real life? That's conservatively 63% of all human communication.

 

I don't know if anyone ever read Quix's chapter in Philosophy Of Dune but in it he talks about Leto II being a glorious bastard. Now, I don;t know what Leto's master stroke is just yet but right now he is allowing a rebellion to take place because he is bored while he rules the known universe.

 

Spice agony defeats proper grammar.

I wasn't too irritated by Leto II's ramblings and politics because all of the Atreideses are a tad mad.

If I remember correctly I think the worst of this is in bk 1 with Count Fayrad(sp). Every bit of dialogue of him has it.

 

Okay yeah I think you're right, it's mostly coming from Fenring.

 

But Fenring only spoke like that in public. When he was conversing in private he dropped all of the "hmmms" and "ahhhhhs". The joy of Frank Herbert is that everything is there to bring richness to the characters. It's not gratuitous. The first Dune book was a showcase for the premise that human beings had unlocked their higher cognitive functions, meanings within meanings, plots within plots, plans within plans. Fenring's annoying way of talking was an example of that. A contrivance to achieve some end.

I guess I could summarize God Emperor as parenting or struggling as a necessity to succeed. Leto II sees the end of humanity so he has to be a God-jerk for 3500 years and breed humanity to be immune to his ability of prescience. It didn't blow me away but was interesting and Siona is interesting enough I might read the next book some time down the road.
