He wants other countries to bend the knee and pledge loyalty to His Highness or some crap. Or so he believes. Even Faux News is leading w “other countries are racing to negotiate”.
I actually think he is going to stick with them as long as possible. Trump has been pelting this manure since the 1980s. He truly thinks he can send America back to the 1950s (when it was great in his mind) with these tariffs. It's going to send us back to the 1880s or worse. As I told my class when they asked what I thought, I simply directed them to the McKinley Tariff of 1890, which was so bad that it led to the Panic of 1893. At the time, the Panic of 1893 was the worst economic depression in our country's history. I ended by telling them they should look at who was president in 1893....Glover Cleveland, our only other president who served two terms in nonconservative terms. And it's absolutely comical the detachment Trump's ghouls have from reality. See this rant as evidence: https://bsky.app/profile/atrupar.com/post/3llwa2hww3u2d Yes, trust the guy who bankrupted three casinos while his son (Eric) freely admitted that he is scamming crypto now because the family brand's name is so toxic it is something that long term is unsalvagable. Edit: And Mark Hamill is correct when he points out that Trump should be putting tariffs on those free-loading...penguins: https://bsky.app/profile/markhamillofficial.bsky.social/post/3llwcc7jnu22d
Which is why Republicans are right here with the answer; get rid of child labor laws. Tiny hands = tiny paychecks.
https://bsky.app/profile/justinbaragona.bsky.social/post/3llwggunno22g Invest in ketchup because Trump is going to be throwing a lot of in it over the next several weeks:
It's moot, because chaotic and abrupt economic policy is not going to "bring back manufacturing" any more than digging up a graveyard, dancing with the rotting corpses, and throwing in fresh bodies is going to bring back the dead.
It’s almost like people who want to burn society down because they think they’ll be allowed to be techno feudal god-kings of their slice of the ashes are actually really dumb.
I said it during Trumps 1st term, he wants to turn the US into a China like state. He has to make people broke and poor and desperate for work to accomplish that. Basically destroy the current way of doing things. But it will take a lot longer than 4 years for that to come about, so of course he's going to try and stay in power longer.
China took decades to build up its economy (even though it was the fastest growth in history) and there is much more direct state involvement than the US has had since WW2 if not ever. If they want to make the US like China, and I'm skeptical there's any coherent goal, then it will be a dismal failure.
It was just a little wind: https://bsky.app/profile/kendrawrites.com/post/3llwgdoqj7s27 I really don't know what to be worried about most with this govt, but this is near the top of the list. Seriously, when the weather forecast is incorrect my 11-year-old says "that's because they fired the weather people." And yes, he heard that from me. But am I supposed to lie to him? I didn't tell him that's the reason the forecast is wrong, I just told him that Trump was getting rid of weather scientists or NOAA. And I am not used to people caring or believing what I say. But my youngest son, he actually listens to me!
It felt like the early days of the pandemic today in the markets. Punk wants us to buy the dips, but I feel like it can get so much worse. The difference today is that unlike during covid, no help is on the way.
CCP leaders generally seem more subtle about pursuing their goals. Trump and his followers' lust for dominating their opponents seems far more Hitlerian.
Appreciate it - I'm still reading the boards regularly, but mostly in lurker status. This was the only place where I did political posts, and as cathartic as that is, it was taking too much of my mental energy, and right now I'd rather channel my rage into my dumb hobbies. Also surviving, that too. I've made scattered posts here in there but this is one of the first I've made in a political thread in a while, it's true. But the sheer stupidity of putting up an blatantly AI-generated tariff scheme was too much for me not to comment on. (And yes, we're all screwed, everyone living everywhere in the world)
The only person in the world thinking what trump did made sense was he himself. Obviously everyone working on Wall Atreet thought it’s a good moment to devest and go into cash. Apple lost 9% in a single day. Holy! And the answers of the country aren’t even in yet. EU, Japan and especially Taiwan … who could stop US computer industry for a few weeks as they „consider“. The stock market won’t be attractive for another few weeks, when those with cash can buy in cheaply. Ah, rumors are the EU will strike back with mild tariffs and brutal regulation of the US tech companies.
Another cycle of torch the economy game. Sell. Buy as much as you can on the cheap. Start again. Round and round we go, who's job gets laid off this time, nobody knows.
Trump is turning the US into the opposite of China, not only in international/economic relations, but what China has done well is depending on its bureaucracy and a coordinated approach while Trump has been unraveling our capacity in those areas. Anyhow, I think these tariffs are more about him asserting dominance ("see how crazy I can be? so take my threats seriously about everything else"), and just his love of attention.
