Working at a theater is tough at times like this. I mean if I'm an scheduled as an usher part of the job is walking into the theaters to make sure everything is ok with sound, screen, no one recording, ect. With GvK I saw the Hong Kong fight in our best room first showing but walked out when Mechagodzilla came out. Saved that for when I could actually watch whole thing.

So basically starting tomorrow I'm going to try and catch enough to satisfy my curiosity but not ruin the end fight.

    The other monster is named
    Shimo.

Funny thing, my youngest actually got that big, walking, "fire" breathing Godzilla for his birthday from my sister (which, by the by, that thing is cool as hell). She also got my oldest a Kong, which was more of a typical action figure, but the box for that included the other characters on the back, so if you ever wanted a good look of Skar King or
    Shimo
, they were right there on the box weeks before. :)

I just want to add something: it makes me feel damn good to see people who may not have high hopes for this one wishing nothing but enjoyment to those who are looking forward to GxK. In an increasingly cynical landscape, it's refreshing to see. I hope you find something to enjoy in it as well @Pro Scoundrel ! :)

    So - no spoilers...

Saw it last night and had a blast. That being said, as you have probably gathered, it's not trying to be MINUS ONE. It's a fun, silly, highly entertaining throw-back to the kind of giant monster movies I loved at weekend matinees, or on UHF on the weekends (how are those for dated references?). This movie exists to give us monster fights and that it does, especially in the second half. The human scenes are passable but - of course - we're not there for the human scenes.

I have seen some complaints that it is much more of a Kong movie than a Godzilla movie, and there is some justification to that, although we get plenty of great Godzilla scenes AND Godzilla is treated as an alpha-level threat so he definitely gets his props.

One pretty mild quibble is that when the monsters fight each other in the Hollow Earth, their size doesn't really come across. When Kong and ...er...certain villains...face off, you often don't get the sense of scale you would if they were duking it out in a city. But that's hardly a showstopper.

I had a great time. Go in expecting to enjoy a silly, grand, WWE-style monster smackdown, and I think you will have a great time!

PS - The theater chain where I saw it had some Godzilla x Kong promo stuff, but not much ...other chains are apparently doing much better. They had some cool Godzilla Minifigures as soda toppers but to get them you had to buy them as part of a package with a decorated popcorn bucket... for $30.... and cheap @#$#$ that I am, thats kinda ridiculous, even for a major G fan like myself. Just saying. Kinda disappointing - they had far more Ghostbusters merch.

Today is the day. Double Header Opening Day.

First I'm going to Phillies/Braves Opening Day and then Godzilla/Kong Opening Day. I've been clear that, after Minus One, everything about this looks... daft. But it's Godzilla and I'm open minded so I have hopes that this film succeeds and also succeeds at getting me to geek out.

In the clips I saw it seems like Rebecca Hall's only job is to describe the plot to us. Seeing it this weekend, maybe today. I do like that blonde actor from Downton Abbey sounds like he's funny in this.

Yes. She is "expository dialogue character #1" in the credits. :)

Sadly, I just learned a terrible bit of info about this film, which makes me feel even less kindly toward it.

"Toho has an agreement with the US that there can only be ONE Godzilla movie released in the US on physical media in any given year. This year, KvGTNE gets the disc. 2025 will get Minus One.
Minus One is available in Japan, but no subtitles and all extras are in Japanese..."

This was so damn fun. Adam Wingard understood the assignment. The monsters are the stars (although the humans have a part to play, and Jia’s character in particular is just as important), and the action is just plain old fun.

I liked the expansion of the lore as well (specifically that
the Iwi have a relationship not only with Kong, but Godzilla and Mothra as well
    ). Speaking of
Mothra, I love that she plays the part of peace keeper between Kong and Godzilla; she even gets in on the fight at the end.

And that final fight? *chef’s kiss* Pure monster mayhem, which is the reason we go to these movies in the first place.

I’m pleased to see that this is doing well, and that audiences are seemingly enjoying it as well. I say let’s crank another one of these out and go pure, bat **** crazy with it, Destroy All Monsters/ Godzilla vs King Ghidorah/Final Wars style. Let’s get Gigan in as a big bad and go out with a bang.

Movie was alright, needed more Godzilla but everything needs more Godzilla. These last two movies have been very pro-Kong, Godzilla almost seems like a guest star

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024)
Viewing Experience: Theatrical (IMAX, then Dolby Cinema)

So, yeah. This one is definitely more of a crowd-pleaser than a serious-metaphor-type of Godzilla movie (though Minus One managed to kinda be both, which is what made it so great). Very much about the kaiju fights- this movie, very wisely (and FINALLY) minimizes the human cast and human plotlines to keep the focus on the monsters (one of the main drawbacks to KOTM and GVK). And as a bonus- the human characters aren't annoying (except for the guy from Andor, who is supposed to be) and even inlcudes a couple really fun-or-well-performed characters.

Downside is that this is very much a Kong-centric move. You could literally cut Godzilla out of this movie and it wouldn't change anything (especially since his pink-colored upgrade ends up being completely unnecessary). But it's still awesome to see the big man on the big screen (caught it in regular IMAX Friday, and in Dolby tonight [since Lincoln Square still has Dune booked on their IMAX]), so it's hard to complain too much.

Overall, I'd say that this one is probably the best film outside of Skull Island in the franchise. Skull Island had the best human cast (and focus), and this runs second place. The human plotline isn't annoying, which gives it the edge up over G14, KOTM and GXK. But the final battle lacks any of the tension from KOTM or GVK (where Ghirdorah felt like a threat), as the solution to defeating the Scar King is pretty obvious and plays out more or less how you will predict it will. So that holds it back from being a stand-out champion entry, unfortunately.

Oh, and the score is actually pretty cool. Apparently done by Junkie XL under his real name.

And, man, the coincidental comparisons to Ghostbusters go beyond just the "Empire" subtitle. [face_laugh]

It’s maybe the perfect “Crazy 1970’s Kaiju Fight Club Movie” for Kong, at the cost of Godzilla feeling like he’s 100% just a guest star showing off what Kaiju Cocain he has access to in his evolved form.

KOTM is still the best Kaiju Fight Club movie for Godzilla himself, though yeah, this movie knowing that Dan Stevens playing a perfectly cheezy human character is a leg up over that one’s human plot (though I still think Serizawa is excellent in that one.)

So happy to see GxK doing well at the box office - hopefully word of mouth sustains it some. I have seen comments about it being a fun movie for kids of a certain age and great point -- we don't get too many of those.

Hopefully it does well enough to encourage MORE "giant monster" movies moving forward!

Second viewing, this time in Dolby, went pretty well. Even more clapping and cheering during this one.

Also had an odd conversation with a random person sitting next to me who confused the '98 Godzilla with this, believing that since Godzilla was female and laid eggs, that being in love with Mothra made Godzilla a lesbian.

I tried to explain the different continuities (including Final Wars being Japanese-made but being separate from Minus One), but I don't think I made much progress. It's certainly a unique take on the mythos [face_laugh]. And, I suppose, if G98 ever got a sequel that included Mothra that could have potentially been... a reading of things. But since that continuity is dead, probably best to leave people believing what they wish to :).
