G-Cell infection, they said. I wonder, perhaps they could make her be like those singing women who could call on monsters.

I missed that line. Also, I'm not sure what you're referring to, but it's definitely sequel bait which I welcome as they told a good story and can only hope for another story where I care about the characters.

It wasn't a line, the director said it as a confirmation. And as for what she could become from the old films:

"....so strap in, for a masterfully executed monster movie that does the impossible; by making you care about the humans too. Wow. Couldn't have said it better myself.

I also love how they compare the low $15 million budget of the film to the typical $100 million crappy, overrated Marvel movie.

Finally watched Godzilla vs Kong 2 and was really underwhelmed. It was just dumb, but not in a good, guys in costumes fighting way. Skar king was just silly. Kong needs to be meaner, and pink Godzilla's spread my arms and roar at the sky thing, just no. I never thought I would dislike a movie with Kong and Godzilla in it, but here we are. I get it's Godzilla for the masses, and I am glad it was a hit, but I will stick with Minus Zero and the Toho films.

I'm already anticipating to watch GVK2 with low expectations; if only based on the ridiculous trailers.

It's amazing that you'll find comments in that Honest Trailers of GMZ on people who somehow criticized it. To me it's night and day when comparing Japanese Godzilla to the Hollywood monsterverse. King Kong with the "Power Glove" just made me laugh out loud.

This is what I'm afraid of.
Is it? Why do the masses always like things more the worse they get?
I'm glad some people enjoyed it, but I can't really be happy about the series moving away from what I enjoy about it.

It is good for the brand, and probably allows Toho to make more films. The American films just seem generic. I did love Skull Island.

I've liked all of the Monsterverse films, so far. But this new one looked really bad to me. Certainly made worse by comparison to Godzilla: Minus One.

I didn't like the looks of it before I saw Minus One, and then after Minus One it just looked terrible.

Watched GxK again, and personally, I'd rank it second in the MV series. It really feels like those entries from Godzilla vs Gigan on (which, aside from vs Megalon, I have a lot of love and nostalgia for).

Personal rankings (and really, I enjoy all of them--at least thus far):

    King of the Monsters
    GxK
    GvsK
    Kong: Skull Island
    Godzilla

Personally, I wasn't trying to compare it to Minus One, either. To me, that's like comparing vs Mechagodzilla or Destroy All Monsters to Gojira. Just two different films with different sets of goals.

Does the Jack Black King Kong remake ever get mentioned/included among the monsterverse franchise? IMO that was by far the BEST of any of the franchise films; if it's meant to be included.

It's really the only one that I'd care to rewatch; at least voluntarily. I'm not including Minus One since it's not obviously unrelated to these Hollywood films anyway.

No, since that was a Universal/Peter Jackson standalone flick. Very good (if long) love letter to the '33 original, but that Kong is not the same Kong as in the MV franchise. Whole different beast, delicious pun intended, altogether.

Fair enough. I still stand by what I said though; that it's the only Hollywood giant monster film that I'd be inclined to rewatch from the last two decades or so.

Pleased to see somebody else champion King of the Monsters. :) The rest of my ranking would be (slightly) reshuffled, but I totally agree with your top spot. And also totally agree with your point about comparing totally different movies and their totally different objectives. And I'm sorry for saying "totally" too much.

I really hope you end up liking GxK more than you fear, if only 'cause it's always more fun to like something than not. :)

    Me too.

One of the main concerns for me is that I already started seeing bad signs with GvsK. There's a reason it's last in my rankings. And what I've seen from GxK is that it's doubled down on what I didn't like, while retaining little of what I did like in the earlier ones.

The grimmer, real world tone is gone. Being replaced with a sillier and more fantastical style.
The allegorical aspects are fading away, with more focus on spectacle than any deeper meaning.
The "First they fight, and then they're friends" trope, that Americans never seem to tire of, is on full display.
The color scheme is almost full neon. Making everything look like a cartoon.
The "Hollow Earth" story is becoming ascendant. I didn't care for it in GvsK.
The greater emphasis on Kong over Godzilla. I love both, but I'm a bigger Godzilla fan.

    Stuff like that.

GXK sequel set for March 26th, 2027. Grant Sputore taking over directing, as Wingard (who wanted to do the film) will be busy with A24's Onslaught. Screenwriter previously did Shang-Chi and Across the Spider-verse.
