This year's Super Bowl Roman Numeral notation: "XL" or "XXXX"?

    Any Latin student will tell you that you only typically have three numerals of the same type added onto another before you subtract from the fifth to get you fourth.

    XL is forty

    XC is ninety

    CD is four hundred

    CM is ninehundred

    etc.

    It's what the hell do--subject verb agreement, mister.

    Obviously, the elementary school point is appropriate.

    Speaking of Roman Numerals, doing math with 'subtractive notation' is very fun--especially when we start doing calculus, just because the number system is funny. It's much easier to use a base number system: then you get neat things like two's complement.

    Technically, he never said when in the future. It could be Super Bowl XC for all we know.
