    The Coming Storm

    Chapter 1

Grand Admiral Thrawn sat motionless in his command chair. His eyes mere slits of glowing red and his face in deep contemplation. The low buzz of soft conversation filled the air of the Chimaera?s bridge. Captain Pellaeon threw a glance at Thrawn, and then quickly returned to gazing out of the starboard viewport at the arriving sentry ships.
?You a have question, Captain?? said Thrawn, evidently aware of Pellaeon?s unease.
    ?No, sir,? said Pellaeon hesitantly.
?Perhaps you are wondering about the whereabouts of Captain Brandei and the Judicator?? mused the Grand Admiral.
?Yes, I was sir. I don?t like it when there is communications silence for such a long period of time.?
?You are quite right, Captain, I concur. Nonetheless, the present circumstances demand a more discrete approach in conducting some of our operations ? for now at least.?
    ?Yes, sir,? managed Pellaeon.
?Ever since the failed attempt on my life at Bilbringi, the Rebellion believes that I am dead,? began Thrawn, involuntarily touching his chest where Rukh had stabbed him. ?And now, the Judicator is maintaining that illusion by feeding false information to suspected Rebel spies.?
?Rebel spies?? asked a bewildered Pellaeon. Thrawn motioned him to come closer.
?Yes, Captain. It appears that two Rebel spies infiltrated the ranks of the Judicator during my absence,? whispered Thrawn.
    ?Sir??
?The situation is under control. They will be executed by Captain Brandei after they send their final transmissions to the Rebellion,? answered the Grand Admiral. He glanced at his watch. ?To be more precise, in exactly one minute.?
Abruptly, a young officer approached the two commanders from behind.
?Sir, the report from the sentry ships,? he said, handing a datapad to Pellaeon.
?Thank you, Lieutenant. You may return to your post.? Pellaeon quickly studied the contents of the datapad.
?Well sir, it appears that our scouts have completed the raid on Xa Fel. We have acquired a complete list on the nearby sector operations.?
?Good, now we will see if our contacts were right. Captain, set a course for the Ukio system. We will leave in one hour,? ordered Grand Admiral Thrawn.
?Sir, we have received a priority message from the Judicator,? called out an officer from the crewpit.
?On screen, Ensign,? said an elated Pellaeon. The holoscreen came to life, and Captain Brandei appeared.
?Admiral, the spies have been killed,? reported the veteran officer.
?Were they able to send their last transmission?? inquired Thrawn.
?Yes, sir. The Rebellion has no clue about the situation.?
?Well done, Captain. Rendezvous with us at Ukio in two days, and signal the Stormhawk and Nemesis to follow suit,? instructed Thrawn.
Captain Brandei?s figure faded from the holoscreen. The Grand Admiral turned to Pellaeon with a smile,
?And now, Captain, begins the final destruction of the Rebellion.?

    Chapter 1 (continued)

Wedge jumped off his X-Wing onto the landing bay tarmac of the New Republic ship Liberty. The sound of technicians hard at work momentarily distracted the veteran pilot from seeing a large freighter entering the bay. Wedged turned to see the approaching vessel - it was the Millenium Falcon. It had been a long time since he'd seen Han, or even Chewbacca for that matter. The freighter slowly came to a halt and the exit ramp came into view.
"Hey! What are you doing here?" shouted out Wedge at the tired looking captain.
Han Solo approached the X-Wing with Chewbacca close behind,
"Well, you don't say. Look who's still kicking around," said Han as he embraced Wedge. "How have you been?"
"Where do you want me start?" chuckled Wedge. The Wookie let out a big groan.
"I can't say the same for myself, old Wedge. You know - family life, commitments."
"Oh yeah, how is the Princess and the twins?"
"They're doing just fine. Chewie here has a great affinity for the kids," Han said as he rested his arm on the Wookie. Chewie let out another snort.
"I was thinking the same thing, Chewie - where's Rogue Squadron?" Han asked.
"We've been busy lately, had to split up into separate squadrons last month because of the pirate raids near Umgul and Tralus," explained Wedge. "I have been commanding the Liberty's patrol squadron here at Anoat. What brings you here?"
"Well not much - I need supplies," said Han. "I'm headed to Lelmra, things aren't looking pretty there."
    "So I hear," whispered Wedge.
"Yeah, the Council is having a tough time getting them to comply with the new trade regulations. Some incidents, nothing major but I have a meeting with their Overleige."
"You, a diplomat?" asked a bewildered Antilles.
"Who would have thought, hey? But ever since the Thrawn campaign, things have changed. You gotta pick your battles," answered Han.
"True. What's the news with Imperials?" inquired Wedge.
"Nothing, really. They are still hurting from Bilbringi, Wayland, and Tangrene. Fleet command has ceased operations in Imperial space. But you know, we have more serious problems to deal with these days," Han said.
"I hear factions are becoming too common now."
Han glanced at the crewman servicing the Falcon.
"Factions? Yeah, there have been quiet a few. But mostly forces that never wanted to be affiliated with us in the first place."
Chewie growled at the obvious ineptness of one of the droids working on the Falcon.
"Go ahead, Chewie. See what's going on and we'll leave in a minute," suggested Han. The Wookie lumbered off to check on the commotion around the freighter ship.
"Do you have time for a drink?" offered Wedge as he unstrapped his helmet.
"I'm afraid not, Wedge. I gotta get going. But I'll be back before I head off again."
"Sure thing. I have to debrief the Captain, take care Han."
Wedge watched as Han and Chewie boarded the Millenium Falcon and roared out of the landing bay. An officer came up behind the pilot,
"Commander Antilles, we have received a distress signal from our forces on Kabal. They're under attack," reported the officer. "Captain Inmet wants to see you on the bridge, immediately."
"Right away," said Wedge as he dashed off to the turbolift.
    Not again.

    Chapter 1 (continued)

The blast door to the bridge of the Liberty slid open, and Wedge entered the quiet command room.
"Commander Antilles, as you now know, our forces are under attack in the Kabal system," began Captain Inmet.
    "Pirates?"
"So it seems. But these pirates are well-equipped - strike cruisers and preybirds," explained Inmet, holding up the latest transmissions from Kabal. "General Madine from High Command will be arriving shortly. Our forces can't be everywhere to defend against these attacks. We need to revise the placement of our forces."
"Do you mean, evacuate?" pondered Wedge.
"Not exactly, Commander. There are far too many systems in the New Republic to protect at the same time."
Suddenly, the bridge blast door opened and Crix Madine appeared.
"General, I am very pleased that you could join us," said Inmet.
    "Commander Antilles," nodded Madine.
    "General."
    "Please continue, Captain," motioned Madine.
"As I was saying, the Outer and Mid-Rim systems have faced considerable attacks lately. Perhaps it's time to regroup our forces and let system forces handle the defenses," proposed Inmet.
"I concur, and so has High Command. As of now, New Republic forces will not send additional forces to defend systems unless absolutely necessary. At the same time, however, individual system forces are to be bolstered - at the expense of home governments," said Madine.
"Is that really wise? Our sytems could fall easily," pointed out Wedge.
"Please remember, Commander, that systems are not forced to be part of the New Republic. Those that do take membership are still responsible for their own defense. Budgetary constraints limit the number of ships and men we can contribute at multiple fronts. Nonetheless, if systems need immediate assistance, support will be provided," countered Madine.
"Captain, status report from Kabal. The pirates have been repulsed but system defenses have been decimated. Also, several mining ships were lost," reported a comm officer.
    "Mining ships?" asked Wedge.
"Yes, Kabal recently began mining operations," said Madine. "That's why the system was attacked."
"The important fact is that Kabal defended itself without New Republic support," reasoned Inmet. "We can send engineers to help with reconstruction, but that's only if we're needed."
"Good point, Captain," said Madine, turning to Wedge. "So, as I said, our forces will not assist system defenses unless absolutely necessary, except for those systems that hold priority membership in the New Republic."
"Who defines 'absolutely necessary', General?" asked Antilles.
"That will be Sector Command's decision, Commander."
    "Very well."
"Now, I must attend to some other duties. Captain, Commander - take care," said Madine as he walked to the turbolift.
Wedge stepped up to the forward viewport and gazed out to see the flurry of activity around the Liberty. This plan didn't seem right to him - why now? An uneasy feeling crept into the pit of his stomach and he quiety left the bridge.

Finally, I've been wondering when there'd ever be a Thrawn fic, and well, here there is!

Yes...do something to bring the Republic to it's knees....and get defeated somewhat too....*grins evilly* I'm sort of an Imperial sympathizer...the Empire always lost so pathetically to the rebels and everything else..time after time..... Have revenge, Thrawn! [face_devil]

    Chapter 1 continued

    Ukio

It took the Chimaera two days to reach the Ukio system, covering a distance of deep space that Pellaeon had travelled regularly. He leaned over the tactical console, reading the latest readouts from the support bay. Everything seemed to be in place, and with the squadron arriving at any moment, Pellaeon felt relieved. He looked over at the comm officer who was busy at his station,
"Lieutenant, when was the last status report from the Bellicose and Inexorable?"
"About three days ago, sir. They should be arriving at the edge of the Abrion Sector tomorrow," reported the officer.
Pellaeon frowned at the sound of a hiss. He looked up to find out the location of the disturbance. Directly above him, Grand Admiral Thrawn stood at the corner of the crew pit, stroking a ysalamiri that was resting in his arms.
"Captain Pellaeon, what word from the Fleet?" Thrawn inquired.
"Most of the support ships have arrived. They are loading supplies from Ukio at the moment."
Thrawn glanced out the viewport at a group of Lancer Frigates approaching the planet. He returned his focus to the crew pit.
"And what of the Star Destroyers?"
"They will be arriving shortly, Admiral."
"Has the planetary defense force been cross-checked?"
"Yes, sir. The Adamant and Marauder have been now assigned to the planetary defense of Ukio," Pellaeon said, reading the names of the Victory Destroyers from his datapad. There would be no taking chances this time. The Grand Admiral wanted to maintain the possession of valuable systems. And Ukio was definitely one that the Empire could not afford to lose.
"Excellent. I want a full status report in one hour. By that time, the Judicator, Stormhawk, and Nemesis will be here," Thrawn instructed as he sat down in his command chair.
Pellaeon climbed up to the bridge walkway and stood beside the Grand Admiral with datapad in hand. Again, Pellaeon threw a peculiar glance at the ysalamiri. This time, Thrawn noticed.
    "Speak freely, Captain."
    Pellaeon looked confused. "Sir?"
"You wonder about the return of the ysalamiri?" Thrawn asked.
"Well - yes, sir. What is the need for them now? We have no Jedi clone to deal with," Pellaeon pointed out, trying not to mention the name of Joruus C'baoth.
    One blue-black eyebrow shot up.
"On the contary, Captain. Once again, we will have to deal with the Jedi, sooner or later," Thrawn countered. "You see, Captain, we no longer have the Spaarti cloning cylinders nor the Emperor's storehouse on Wayland. To acquire the resources to launch our campaign, we need to neutralize, or at least minimize, any Jedi interference."
"Understood, Admiral," replied a beaten Pellaeon.
"Of course, we do need more personnel and ships, Captain. That is why we need to make immediate contact with Imperial forces in the Deep Core," mused Thrawn.
"With all due respect sir, I doubt the squabbling leaders of the Deep Core will offer much support. They're too busy building up their own," said Pellaeon.
"That is very true on its own, Captain. But it won't last for long. What we merely need is cooperation and sustenance for our forces."
"How will we get that if the entire galaxy thinks you are dead?" asked Pellaeon, waving his hand in an encompassing motion.
The Grand Admiral remained silent for a moment.
"Patience, Captain. When the time is right, my 'coming back from the dead' will be revealed. For the moment, our plans rest on absolute secrecy," said Thrawn. "And as such, you will continue to be the face of command and control."
    "Yes, sir, I completely understand."
"Good," meowed Thrawn as the comm officer approached.
"Captain Pellaeon, the Judicator, Stormhawk, and Nemesis have arrived," reported the officer.
"Thank you, Lieutenant." Pellaeon turned to the Grand Admiral,
    "Sir, what are your orders?"
"Instruct our respected commanders to pick up their supplies from the planet. And of course, those status reports should be in my hands very soon," Thrawn said, gesturing at

One request, could you put some space between when characters speak? It makes it a little easier on the eyes to read.

Sorry everyone, I apologize for not continuing this intriguing story.

The final semester of my university life has started, and as such, I will not be able to continue nor finish this Thrawn fanfic ... too busy.

Grand Admiral Thrawn is and will continue to be my favourite Star Wars character of all time - he is an exceptional example of brilliance, uniqueness, boldness, cool-headedness, and honour.

Kudos to Timothy Zahn for creating such a mesmerizing character who offered many lessons to readers.

Since I have disappointed you, I leave you with words of wisdom from the esteemed Grand Admiral,

"History is on the move. Those who cannot keep up will be left behind, to watch from a distance. And those who stand in our way, will not watch at all."
